For the third consecutive year, TCS maintains #1 spot for client satisfaction in the KPMG survey of 340 top Nordic companies by IT spend
Scores highest among 28 service providers surveyed and demonstrates 12 to 20 point lead on companies delivering services of comparable scale and complexity
Delivers industry leading growth, Nordic operations double in size since 2010
Mumbai, May 11, 2012: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), (BSE: 532540, NSE: TCS) global provider of IT services, consulting and business solutions, announced that it maintained its #1 position in the Nordic region for the third consecutive year in the annual KPMG Nordic Region Service Provider Performance and Satisfaction study. In the survey covering CXOs of 340 of the top IT spending companies in the Nordic Region, TCS came out at the top with an overall client satisfaction score of 80%, the highest amongst the 28 service providers evaluated and significantly above the industry average of 68%.

“This is the third year in succession that TCS has achieved the best score in general customer satisfaction and has achieved above-average results in every single KPI. The result is especially impressive considering the rate at which TCS has been growing in the region. Very few companies are able to balance industry leading growth while maintaining pole position in client satisfaction. TCS has demonstrated that it has got the formula right,” said Carl-Henrik Hallström, Head of Sourcing Advisory at KPMG.

TCS is among a select few global service providers in the survey that have had more than 25 large scale and transformational projects in the Nordic region evaluated. When relating the TCS score to other global service providers that engage in projects of comparable complexity and scale, the survey shows that the general customer satisfaction lead that TCS has over these companies is between 12 and 20 percentage points.

One of the clients TCS is providing transformation services to, Will Pritchett, Director of Change at RSA Scandinavia (Codan and Trygg-Hansa), said, “The TCS team is successfully transforming our Claims and Front-office Platform, which has delivered strategic value to RSA in consolidating our operations in Sweden and Denmark through establishing a common Nordic IT platform; extendable to all markets in the region. Thanks to the ability to deliver industry specific and complex services while working closely with RSA and our partner ecosystem, we are extremely satisfied with TCS. The partnership with them has been critical towards the success of this program.”

Another TCS client, Taneli Ropponen, CIO at DNA, remarked, “The TCS team has transformed our IT landscape enabling us to improve end-customer experience and enhance operational stability. TCS has been very flexible, accessible and responsible partner that has proactively worked on innovative solutions to overcome challenges and meet our objectives.”

Present in the Nordic region since 1991, TCS has continuously invested in the market locally to deliver consistent results to its customers with a level of certainty that no other firm can match. TCS now has more than 4500 consultants working on projects in the Nordic region with over one-third of in-country staff being local nationals. Its scale of operations have doubled since 2010 in the region and globally the company recently announced a symbolic crossing of US $10 billion mark in terms of revenue.

“Over the last few years, clients in the Nordic market have demanded a new age supplier that can keep up with the demands of an increasingly competitive business world and hyper-connected consumer. I am very pleased that for the third year in running we have delivered consistent performance, while undertaking larger and more complex assignments every year. I attribute this to our unique company culture of customer centricity, multi-disciplinary capability and collaborative approach,” said Amit Bajaj, Head – Nordic and Baltic Region. He added, “Customers who choose TCS can trust us to deliver. Notably 100% of TCS’ clients surveyed were satisfied with our services.”

About KPMG Nordic Region Service Provider Performance & Satisfaction Study 2012

Genome Valley, Hyderabad, India, May 10, 2012: – Ella Foundation announced today that it has won US$ 100K Grand Challenges Explorations Grant, an initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This Grant will help Ella Foundation pursue development of a highly ‘disabled’ virus to ‘check-mate’ polio after the phasing out of oral poliovirus (OPV) vaccine, as part of an innovative global health research project.

This project to “checkmate the polio virus” during and after the eradication of poliomyelitis could result in a live polio vaccine that cannot perpetuate. Such a vaccine could carry the beneficial effects of an oral polio vaccine namely safety, efficacy, ease of manufacture, distribution and administration along with the safety profile of an injectable polio vaccine by eliminating vaccine derived polio virus (VDPV).

“Vaccines play a crucial role in the eradication of diseases that affect millions of lives worldwide. The GCE Grant will help us accelerate the pace of research programs and Explore New Solutions in Global Health Priority Areas.” Dr. Krishna Ella, Co-Founder of Ella Foundation said.

Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) funds individuals worldwide to explore ideas that can break the mold in how we solve persistent global health and development challenges. Ella Foundation’s project is one of over 100 Grand Challenges Explorations Round 8 grants announced today by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

“Grand Challenges Explorations encourages individuals worldwide to expand the pipeline of ideas where creative, unorthodox thinking is most urgently needed,” said Chris Wilson, director of Global Health Discovery and Translational Sciences at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. “We’re excited to provide additional funding for select grantees so that they can continue to advance their idea towards global impact.”

Grand Challenges Explorations funds scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs worldwide to explore ideas that can break the mold in how we solve persistent global health and development challenges.

To receive funding, Ella Foundation and other Grand Challenges Explorations Round 8 winners demonstrated in a two-page online application a bold idea in one of five critical global heath and development topic areas that included agriculture development, immunization and nutrition.

Calling upon the graduating batch of FORE School of management, New Delhi, India’s most respected and powerful CEO of all [...]

Calling upon the graduating batch of FORE School of management, New Delhi, India’s most respected and powerful CEO of all times, Mr. N. R Narayana Murthy, urged the students to align personal objectives with the growth impulses of the country and to take up the responsibility of contributing to the society.
In his inspiring and motivational speech, the Padmabibhusan award winner, Chairman Emeritus, Infosys Limited, who was the Chief Guest for the 19th Convocation Ceremony of FORE School of Management, also quoted American Social writer, Eric Hoffer, “In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future” and emphasized his point that, “every citizen has an important role in the undertaking of the nation’s development; however, the educated ones have a greater opportunity and consequently a greater responsibility towards this contribution”.
Talking about post independent India, he mentioned, that the country has produced world class scientist and engineers, built bridges, dams and factories, send satellites, rockets, is globally renowned for software programming skills, is a nuclear super power and a force to reckon with. But the fundamental question is have we fulfilled the dreams of our founding fathers of having a country where every individual lives freely, basic amenities are in place and where poverty does not exist? Quoting Rabindranath Tagore, “Where the mind is without fear and head is held high” he said, “we still have more than 350 million Indians living with a mere Rs.36.00 per day; 250 million Indians do not have access to save drinking water. Over 750 million Indians do not have access to decent sanitation. India ranks 6th or 7th in the global hunger index. It is therefore appropriate to think of few important things. Have India made significant progress since independence. Can we be happy about the progress? Have we kept up with the pace of progress compared to the rest of world? Have we achieved progress which is sustainable?”

Mr. Murthy left the future business leaders present in the auditorium, with valuable insights, advising them to benchmark themselves always with the best in the world keeping focus on execution, as the need of the day is to bring efficiency and excellence in professional lives and a thought provoking question, “What can you do to achieve that India?”.
The convocation ceremony was held on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the FORE campus where a total of 268 students graduated this year, in the three variants of the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) course offered by FORE. Of these, 170 were from the flagship full-time PGDM course, 56 students from PGDM (IMG) and 42 students from the PGDM (WMG) course.

Also present in the ceremony was Mr. R.P. Billimoria, President Emeritus FORE (Former Chairman-Public Enterprises Selection Board, Govt. of India & Former Chairman-SAIL); Mr. R.C. Sharma, President, FORE (former Director CBI, Govt. of India); Dr. Jitendra K. Das, Director, FORE. Dr. Das presented the annual activity report for the institute and emphasized on FORE’s new phase of growth by going international through exchange programmes and engagement with prestigious schools like ESC Rennes, School of Business (France), Faculty of Business, UNB (Canada), Savannah University (USA) and Asian Institute of Technology. The current batch onwards will be exposed to the international business environment through an intensive immersion programme in international B-Schools. Expansion plans of existing FORE infrastructure as well as a new campus at Sonepat for also announced.

100% of FORE final year students received their placement offers and 100 % of the first year students secured their summer internship. The highest CTC this year soared to Rs. 32 lakhs, as compared to last year’s Rs. 13 lakhs, while the average CTC for final placements increased from last year’s Rs. 7 lakhs to approximately Rs. 8 lakhs this year. 32 out of the total 111 were new recruiters for the final placement this year, including companies like TATA Motors Ltd., HSBC, Castrol, Genpact, C.B. Richards, UB Group, Michael Page International, EXL Services, Honeywell, Maruti Suzuki, Sony India, Jones Lang LaSalle, Axis Bank, etc.
The convocation ended with the students high on excitement and beautiful message from Dr. B.B.L Madhukar, Vice President FORE, in the form of a shayari, “ Gul ne gulshan se gulfaam veja hai, sitaron ne aasmaan se saalam veja hai, Mubarak ho aap ko ye degree, Khuda ne Jannat se ye paigaam veja hai.”

Dr Arvind Malhotra, MS FICS Mch Neurosurgery Consultant Spine & Neurosurgeon shared his experience and complications that he faced while operating the two patients.
One of them suffered from Acoustic Scwhannoma (a non cancerous tumor of hearing); where a ball size tumor was successfully operated from 45 yrs old Female patient.
While the second patient suffered from Olfactory Groove Meningioma (a large benign tumor); where a cricket ball size tumor was successfully removed from a 60 year old patient.
Explaining the two cases, Dr Arvind Malhotra said, “Acoustic tumors are benign tumors of the hearing nerve and are in a sensitive area of brain where the centre for sensations of face, eyes, swallowing are present. Any damage can lead to permanent disability and even death.”
“Olfactory Groove Meningioma arises from the nerve of smell which runs between nose and brain. These compress vision nerves and frontal lobes with resulting blindness and mental behaviour changes. Such surgeries are difficult, as all nerves and vessels of the brain are in centre where the tumor is located. Precision and right technical help are two important things which are needed for such surgeries.”

Ratnakar Bank Selects Finacle from Infosys as its Core Banking Technology Partner to Drive Innovation led Growth
Bangalore, Mumbai: May, 3rd, 2012: Infosys, a global leader in consulting and technology, and Ratnakar Bank, a major player in private sector banking, today announced a strategic partnership for the bank’s universal banking platform. Infosys will implement Finacle™ core banking solution to support Ratnakar Bank’s objective of client-centricity, product innovation and scalability for future growth.

The bank aims to grow its number of branches to 125 in the next three months, and to about 300 over the next three years. Ratnakar Bank also seeks new business opportunities by launching several new products across various verticals. To fulfill this objective and gain a competitive edge, the bank intends to leverage best-in-class banking practices on a new-age technology platform.

Speaking on the selection, Mr. Vishwavir Ahuja, Managing Director and CEO, Ratnakar Bank said “In the transformation of the bank to a vibrant new-age entity, technology will play a critical role. Since we have least legacy we believe that bringing in the latest technology will become one of our key differentiators. We are the one of the first few banks that will install the latest version of Finacle from Infosys. This aids our technology strategy and with this we future proof our core banking system.”

Ratnakar Bank’s upgrade from the legacy banking system to a new-age platform will help it effectively overcome the challenges of managing operational change. It will also enable the bank to have a 360 degree view of customer relationships which in turn would improve customer experience and enhance loyalty. This alliance will also facilitate seamless integration between all the banking channels, including online, mobile and branch thus enhancing operational efficiency and lowering transaction costs. Finacle will help the bank enhance its speed to market, in terms of product/service delivery, by supporting its expansion across both urban and rural markets of the country.

“One of the pre-requisites at Ratnakar Bank in selecting its core banking solution technology partner was for the product to have the flexibility to adapt to a dynamic environment to offer new products and services to our customers. Finacle has been able to provide the Bank with a comprehensive, integrated yet modular business solution that effectively addresses our strategic and operational challenges. We are happy to have chosen an excellent partner in Infosys to support our growth ambitions. ” said Mr. Nitin Chopra, Head – Consumer & Retail Banking at Ratnakar Bank.

Research studies indicate that 48% of customers globally plan to change their banks due to poor service levels. Finacle will play the critical role of helping the bank streamline operational efficiencies and enhance customer service. It is estimated that 11% of Indian banking customers are likely to change their banks in the future. Leveraging Finacle, Ratnakar Bank will also be better positioned to right sell personalized offerings, bundled products and an enriched segment-specific product portfolio to customers.

According to Haragopal Mangipudi, Global Head – Finacle™, Infosys, “This deal underscores the success of our product roadmap to offer banks a one stop shop for all their banking needs. Our consistent R&D investments ensure we deliver openness and best of breed functionality to improve efficiencies and enhance product delivery capability and in turn, increase profitability for our clients.
3DPLM Software Solutions deploys NetApp virtualization solutions

- To drive rapid business growth by leveraging resulting flexibility and efficiency-

Bangalore, India, May 08, 2012 :NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP)today announced that it will help 3DPLM Software Solutions Ltd., a joint venture company of Geometric Limited and DassaultSystèmes involved in CAD and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) product development, to make the transition to virtualized IT infrastructure. With the increasing usage of PLM in India and across the world, 3DPLM needed greater flexibility and scalability to help over 1500 developers and engineers built better applications.

NetApp’s systems and solutions, being deployed in two phases, will help 3DPLM improve the economics of their internal IT infrastructure. This will help the company increase storage capacity and lower costs. 3DPLM could save nearly 60% storage capacity due to de-duplication feature, and 20% due to thin provisioning.

Commenting on their association, Surajit Sen, Director – Channels Marketing & Alliances, NetApp India, said, “We strongly believe that NetApp’s innovative and futureready systems and solutions will play an important role in changing the economics of IT in India Inc. We are delighted that progressive companies like 3DPLM are realizing the advantages of NetApp’s virtualization solutions in their bid to drive organizational efficiencies. We look forward to a long-standing association with 3DPLM and wish them success and rapid business growth, built on NetApp technologies.”

Manoj Bhat, Head IT Operations, 3DPLM, said, “Our engineers work on very heavy files, and therefore good storage was one of the key elements in our transition towards a virtualized computing environment. With a fast growing business, we were also facing increasing demands of containing server sprawl. With NetApp’s innovative and scalable storage systems and solutions, our concerns are now addressed, and we believe we will ride on the resulting flexibility and efficiency to rapidly support our users and save tremendously on power, cooling and data center space.”

3DPLM carries out research and development for DassaultSystèmes products in India. 3DPLM, along with NetApp team, discussed the company’s challenges for virtualization; and with the help of NetApp’s Global Services team designed and deployed a solution that incorporated Cisco UCS, VMware and NetApp technologies and products to deliver a complete, end-to-end solution. Together, these features create a flexible platform that can be scaled to accommodate a variety of enterprise application workloads .Virtualizing more than 350 servers will help 3DPLM save a projected 119KW of power and any sudden increase in the business requirement can be fulfilled without any loss of time

Seize the opportunity to ‘Write the Future’

Develop exciting apps for Facebook & win iPads, Smartphones, iPods and more…

India, May 9, 2012: Following the astounding popularity of FaceCode Hackathon, the first app development contest of its kind, KRDS, the country’s largest Facebook Preferred Developer Consultant (now PMD), is organizing ‘KRDS FaceCode’ for the second year in a row. ‘KRDS FaceCode’ is a 24hr, all-night hack contest for the developer community to build apps exclusively for Facebook. The enthusiastic response displayed by this community last year encouraged KRDS to conduct a second edition, the theme for which is ‘Write the Future’. FaceCode is one of India’s largest hackathons in scope; it encourages people to develop apps around real-life national issues like corruption, education, traffic hauls etc. on Facebook, to lead Indians into a better future.

The contest begins on Saturday, May 19th and ends on Sunday, May 20th. FaceCode is open to all enthusiasts – freshers as well as working professionals – who can participate online or from KRDS’ offices in Chennai, Bengaluru and Delhi. Interested participants can log onto: https://www.facebook.com/KRDS?sk=app_378766885488137 to register. They can post queries/responses at https://www.facebook.com/groups/facecode2012/ or email facecode2012@krds.com or tweet with the hashtag ‘#facecode2012’. While registrations are open until 8pm on Friday, May 18th, participants are encouraged to register at the earliest to get the right team members and also to receive necessary communication about the contest.

Announcing the competition and inviting participants, Mr. Preetham Venkky, Business Head Asia, KRDS(Facebook Experts) said, “The overwhelming response last year of over 1000 registrations and the quality of apps we judged has convinced us that India has the best talent pool in the app development space. With the second edition of FaceCode hackathon we want to bring out the indigenous best in the young as well as experienced developers in the country.”

According to industry veterans, hackathons are an ideal platform to come up with some strong prototypes and provide implementation ideas for the same. Developers deal with challenges on a day to day basis, but a challenge to ‘Write the Future’ is definitely one that is worth taking up!

Bangalore, May 9, 2012: IEEE, the world’s largest professional association advancing technology for humanity, today announced the publication of IEEE 802.11™-2012, which defines the technology for the world’s premier wireless local area network (LAN) products.

The new IEEE 802.11-2012 revision has been expanded significantly by supporting devices and networks that are faster, more secure, while offering improved Quality of Service and, improved cellular network hand-off. IEEE 802.11 standards, often referred to as “Wi-Fi®,”already underpin wireless networking applications around the world, such as wireless access to the Internet from offices, homes, airports, hotels, restaurants, trains and aircraft around the world. The standard’s relevance continues to expand with the emergence of new applications, such as the smart grid, which augments the facility for electricity generation, distribution, delivery and consumption with a two-way, end-to-end network for communications and control.

“IEEE 802.11 is obviously a standard of tremendous impact for developers and users of Wi-Fi-enabled devices, service providers, the global smart-grid community, manufacturers, healthcare workers and retail service providers around the world,” said Phil Solis, research director with ABI Research. “In the 15years since the standard’s original publication, we’ve seen wireless networking evolve from a curiosity and nice-to-have capability to a must-have feature for doing business in a wide range of industries around the world. It’s a capability that today is expected to be embedded in almost any communications device, and it’s a service that’s expected to be available to employees and customers almost anywhere in the world.”

IEEE 802.11defines one MAC and several PHY specifications for wireless connectivity for fixed, portable and mobile stations. IEEE 802.11-2012 is the fourth revision of the standard to be released since its initial publication in 1997. In addition to incorporating various technical updates and enhancements, IEEE 802.11-2012 consolidates 10 amendments to the base standard that were approved since IEEE 802.11’s last full revision, in 2007. IEEE 802.11n™, for example, defined MAC and PHY modifications to enable much higher throughputs, with a maximum of 600Mb/s; other amendments that have been incorporated into IEEE 802.11-2012 addressed direct-link setup, “fast roam,”radio resource measurement, operation in the 3650-3700MHz band, vehicular environments, mesh networking, security, broadcast/multicast and unicast data delivery, interworking with external networks and network management.

“The new IEEE 802.11 release is the product of an evolutionary process that has played out over five years and drawn on the expertise and efforts of hundreds of participants worldwide. More than 300 voters from a sweeping cross-section of global industry contributed to the new standard, which has roughly doubled in size since its last published revision,” said Bruce Kraemer, chair of the IEEE 802.11 working group. “Every day, about two million products that contain IEEE 802.11-based technology for wireless communications are shipped around the world. Continuous enhancement of the standard has helped drive technical innovation and global market growth. And work on the next generation of IEEE 802.11 already has commenced with a variety of project goals including extensions that will increase the data rate by a factor of 10, improve audio/video delivery, increase range and decrease power consumption.”

Mumbai; Wednesday, May 10, 2012: Hinduja Hospital has added another feather to its cap. The hospital, celebrating 60 years of service, went ahead and put to test its food services division for a HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) certification – usually done by the hotel industry. Not only did the hospital pass the test but also became the first hospital in India to have got certified by DNV, Netherlands and once again proving that it indeed stands by its commitment of “Quality Healthcare to All” – a legacy followed from the time of Shri Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja, founder of Hinduja Hospital.

Most hospitals as a rule do not allow patients to consume food brought externally as it could be contaminated or improperly cooked, which can lead to other complications. Hinduja Hospital’s in-house food service department already has strict protocols that are followed to maintain food safety and hygiene. Yet the hospital believed in getting this authenticated by a third party hence, went in for HACCP certification. The hospital prepares each day approximately 3500 packs of food.

Mr. Pramod Lele, CEO, Hinduja Hospital said, “The food and food service department is equally important in speedy recovery of patients. We therefore decided to subject our FSD to the most stringent auditing standards. This certification is usually sought after by hotel industry but we decided to go for the certification as Hinduja Hospital always ensured ‘Quality Healthcare for All’ and thus we have become the first hospital to get HACCP certified.”

Mrs. Savinder Kaur, Director Support Services said, “Hinduja Hospital is driven by Excellence in Patient Care and Employees Development. My team is totally committed to carry out assigned activities as a challenge to perform with a highest degree of excellence. Based on their dedication & work ethics we were motivated to subject our department to inspection by a renowned regulatory authority Det Norske Veritas AS (DNV) which resulted in us being the 1st HACCP certified hospital in India. We are confident to continue to provide in future, safe food which is one of the important requirements of Quality delivery of Patient Care.”

The certification process involved audits conducted by, DNV Business Assurance Management, Netherlands. HACCP certification ensures that the systems for managing food safety are in place and adequate pre requisite programmes are established for ensuring safe food. The HACCP methodology is a structured, preventive approach to food safety that optimises efforts to provide the consumer with safe food. An efficient food safety management system tailored to the processes will support the organisation’s efforts to prevent food safety failures and associated costs, and ensure legal compliance. At the Hinduja Hospital, the auditors audited the receiving, pre-preparation, cooking and serving of Indian and Continental vegetarian food of the hospital. In other words they audited the entire food chain, raw material storage to the cooked food being served to patients and others in the hospital and finally presented the certificate.

“We at DNV would like to congratulate the management of P D Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Centre for successfully getting the HACCP Certification. HACCP certification of Food safety Management system for the food preparation and servicing is an unique and commendable initiative undertaken by P D Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Centre. It demonstrates the organization’s commitment towards food safety compliance for its staff and patients. Certification helps the organization to measure their system against acknowledged and relevant food safety standards and contribute to continual improvement,” said Sujitkumar Nair, Zonal Head (Food Sector & Training Services) – West, Det Norske Veritas AS.

Any business related to food or food production has to be registered with The Food Safety Standard Authority India (FSSAI). The FSSAI act is all about safety and hygiene of food and HACCP is considered the apex certification when it comes to quality, safety and hygiene of food. The certification from HACCP is one among the others where the hospital has been at the vanguard of many such quality initiatives including NABH, CAP, ISO 27001 for IT safety and Six Sigma to name a few.

About Hinduja Hospital:
P.D.Hinduja Hospital, part of the Hinduja Group, is an ultramodern tertiary care hospital with a Medical Research Centre. The hospital has been created in association with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGM), Boston. P.D.Hinduja Hospital was the first multi disciplinary tertiary care hospital to receive ISO 9002 Certification from KEMA of Netherlands for Quality Management System.
May 9, 2012, Hyderabad: The current debate on ensuring food security for the people of the country must focus on [...]

May 9, 2012, Hyderabad: The current debate on ensuring food security for the people of the country must focus on the need to provide nutritious food and bio- technology can play a vital role in the area, farm experts and scientists said today.

“The first green revolution took care of food security but did not address the problem of providing healthy food. We now need new technology in agriculture that can address the problem of malnutrition, Dr B Sesikeran, Director National Institute of Nutrition said at a panel discussion.

“Food security alone is not enough to ensure health and nutrition for the people of this country. We need to look at production of vegetables, fruits and foods that contain micronutrients through the use of technology and ensure value addition. At every level of agriculture you need technological revolution.

Several suggestions to bolster agriculture growth through utilization of better seeds and thereby farmers prosperity were made during the media workshop with experts organized by IndoAsiancommodities.com, a website devoted to indepth analysis and opinions on commodities, metals and farm technology.

‘Technology as a Driver of Growth: Ensuring Farm Prosperity’, is the fourth in a series of media workshops and panel discussion on the importance of farm technology being organised by IndoAsiancommodites.com. The first such event was held in Jaipur and chaired by Dr Swapan Datta, Deputy Director General, Indian Council for Agricultural Research. The other two events were held in Bhopal and Ahmedabad.

Raghava Rao, managing director of Kohinoor Hatcheries Ltd said misconceptions and policy irritants were preventing technology from percolating to the farmers and proving detrimental to them in the long run.

Speaking at the workshop Dr Dwarkesh Parihar, Chief Scientist at Shriram Bioseed Genetics, said there was no doubt in the minds of the scientific community over the use of biotechnology. “It is a fantastic technology that has benefited the farmer, the people and the country.” he said adding there was a need to understand the science behind the technology and to appreciate its longterm benefits in improving people’s lives.

According to Sesikeran ensuring that people of the country get food was the primary goal of what is known now as food security that led to the green and white revolutions . He emphasised the time has come to use technology to step up quality food production.

Sesikeran said doubts over use of GM technology were misplaced and most of Europe, where the anti GM debate had started, has now accepted it. “Even in Europe more and more countries like Spain, France and Italy have taken to GM technology. North America and South America adopted this technology in the 1990 and if any proof is needed here is a history of safe human use “, he said. “With this technology if millions of lives can be saved we should embrace it as benefits far outweigh risks,” Sesikaran added.

Saying that doubts over GM technology do not have any scientific base, he said several GM crops are on trial but the process has slowed down because of misplaced notions and protests.

Parihar said somehow over the years BT and biotechnology got merged in the minds of the people and pointed out there was a vast difference between the two. He said biotechnology led to lower cost of production, higher yields and reduced the risk of dangerous chemicals.

Raghava Rao said too much focus on cereals led to a drop in production of pulses, oilseeds and corn and blamed the government for its “shortsighted” objectives. He said technology should be utilized to assess why prices of a particular commodity were going up or down as ultimately it was the farmer who was suffering because of the fluctuation in prices and it was also leading to frequent change in cropping patterns. He said Indian agriculture was still highly rain dependant and technology should be used for better forecasting of rains and monsoon.

The need for adopting modern farm technology to step up productivity and meet nutritional requirements while India, an agro-based economy, is on the threshold of a second green revolution, were emphasized by eminent experts at an interactive discussion here today.

Participating in the discussion the panelists said science and technology could be used to ensure value addition in crops and for evolving techniques for plants to withstand environmental and climate induced changes like droughts, floods and temperature fluctuations. Issues related to limited resources like water and fertile land, impact of climate change, bio safety and food safety aspects, use of chemicals such as fertilisers and pesticides needed to be addressed.

While the country was producing a record 250 million tonnes of foodgrains annually, 42 percent of women and children remain malnourished. Productivity had to be enhanced substantially to ensure everyone had access to nutritious food. For effective and quick agricultural operations use of machinery is crucial, it was pointed out. Farm machinery includes tools for deep ploughing, land leveling caring land, and other operation. For threshing and harvesting multipurpose machinery are imperative for saving time and labour and for efficient work.

The next round of technology requires the spread of improved variety of seeds to release land for crops where demand elasticity is greater – fruits, vegetables, and feed for animal husbandry products. Agriculture sector reforms are necessary to improve soil fertility, water management, new technologies, markets and creation of efficient value chains for supply and delivery.

India has the world’s second largest area under agriculture and also enjoys the second position in the world in terms of overall agricultural production. With a billion plus growing population in the country, it becomes imperative for India to increase its agricultural productivity, to not only be able to feed the growing population, but also provide raw material for the development of various industries. Agriculture and associated industries also account for about 50% of the country’s manpower.

It is estimated that the country would need an additional 50 million tonnes of foodgrains in the next 10 years to meet the domestic demand, as enunciated by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in his address to the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) recently.

The government in a report on ‘State of Indian Agriculture’ presented to parliament in February emphasized the need to bridge the yield gap in low productivity regions by technology, inputs and other interventions. It said raising productivity also assumes significance in view of the demand for land area growing for industrialization, infrastructure and housing.

Use of hybrid seeds, irrigation and modern practices of agriculture have changed the farming picture. Now with more yield per hectare, advanced agricultural implements such as automatic seed drills to sow seeds and seed cum-fertilizer drills (to sow seed and fertilizer at a time) are also being increasingly used by farmers. Agriculture research and technological infusion are key to strengthen domestic agriculture and to ensure sustainable growth, reduce farm losses and increase farmers’ incomes. Due to stagnating crop yields, agriculture is on a decline and no longer attracts people as a lucrative profession, especially the youth.

As such there is a need for corporates, research institutes and agricultural departments of central and state governments to engage more closely with farmers and for the government to be more proactive on issues concerning agriculture technology to revamp the agriculture sector and growth.
