New Delhi, January 28, 2012: Campus of Jagan Institute of Management Studies, got a make over, when students immersed in youthful exuberance during the zonal prelims of Anugoonj, the Annual Cultural Festival of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.

A number of events and competitions catering to a variety of disciplines such as music, literature, dance, poetry, theatre and fine arts were a part of this zone-2 fest.
Seven billion people populate the world today. Each of them unique in their own sense, each of them are just [...]

Seven billion people populate the world today. Each of them unique in their own sense, each of them are just one among the multitudes of millions that seek to make their voice heard. How many people die nameless, living as though they never existed to the world outside? All caught up in the giant rat race, there seems to exist nothing outside the world we confine ourselves to. Today’s world is like a box, a fixed path and procedure existing for everything we ever want to do. Things seem to lie in black and white, with nothing new being added to the canvas , the artist in us devoid of inspiration.

There are few, however, who choose to see things differently. While we may look up, down, left and right, there are some, who look forward. These, are the visionaries of today. Envisioning colour where there is grey, with sight that pierces the mists of time, these are people who live outside the box, challenging boundaries and proving once and again, that possibilities, are indeed, limitless. With stories that can shake the very foundation of our being, these men live to change other people and make them realise that their potential is unbounded.

A story is a curious thing. No one knows how they came about or why they’re so popular. However, one thing is clear, their ability to change people. Events happen every day. However, the beauty of it all lies in the perception of the event, not the execution itself. For example, the long and drawn out, so called debate between science and religion. Science provides a logical explanation, yes, but religion touches some inner part of us, somehow giving most people peace of mind. This is the essence of a story.

We live amongst chaos, caught up in the threads of fate, trying to navigate through the twists and turns life throws up. We often have no idea where we are headed or even where we want our destination to be. Purposeless and lost, everything seems pointless. With no idea of what we want, chaos and disorder seem to take over you and you soon become akin to a twig on a river, with no idea where you’re going and with no ability to control that fate.

In such situations, a properly told story acts as a guiding light, seeking to tell you that what seems impossible is in reality, very much possible. A properly story will change your story into a tale to be heard, that inspires masses to emulate it.

From the organisers of the highly successful 2011 version, we present to you,

TEDxBITSGoa 2012

“This is my story”

Carefully selecting a wide spectrum of stories designed to inspire, excite and evoke passion, we present to you a package that guarantees to deliver. Going through the intricacies of technology and innovation, with a man who has worked with the visually impaired, unravelling the mystery behind blind photography, capturing the bloody emotions and scenes of war and getting an absolute first person view of it by experts in the field and then exploring India’s wild and beautiful terrain with one who can who knows every corner of the country, we then add a dash of humour from the writers of ‘The week that wasn’t’. Moving on, we come to the moving tale of the founder of the India development foundation and his lifetimes work with leprosy patients, the woman who has struggled to make the roar of India’s tigers be heard again, the heart moving tale of a musician who has braved all odds to keep his passion for song alive, a man who has seen the bad side of the law and had the tremendous strength of character and willpower to reform himself, a woman who needs no mention, paving the way for women in the Indian police, a man who has given up all the riches he could have had to teach the poor and educate the masses, and a man who has followed his dream, no matter what, to become one of the most followed people in the field of photography today.

All these visionaries have one thing in common. A story that is far from ordinary, one that will make you sit up and listen, a story that will change your very life. This is your chance to live your dream and not dream it, your chance to start becoming the person you want to be, and to realise that your possibilities are indeed, limitless.

Vishal Misal is living his business dream and hiring his hero, Sir Richard Branson, as a keynote speaker for what has been dubbed “The UK’s Biggest Business Event” – Business 2012.

January 18th 2012 – Vishal Misal, a 24 year old Masters graduate who came over from India to study at the University of Nottingham on a scholarship, is living his business dream and hiring his hero, Sir Richard Branson, as a keynote speaker for what has been dubbed “The UK’s Biggest Business Event” – Business 2012.

Having been awarded a distinction for his Masters in International Business, Vishal immediately set up events company Blak Pearl Ltd from a small office on the University of Nottingham Innovation Park (before he relocated the business to Bristol in 2011).

Working tirelessly for 18 months, Vishal launched his breakthrough event ILSG 2010, featuring U.S. sales guru Brian Tracy and UK entrepreneur Karren Brady, which placed him firmly on the promotional map.

Now, Vishal has done what his hero Sir Richard Branson has always inspired him to do, think big. So he has, hiring Sir Richard himself to be the cornerstone of his hugely ambitious Business 2012 project, which runs from the 18th-20th March at the O2 in London.

Business 2012 is free to attend, with over 600 workshops, seminars and exhibitors available to learn from and speak to, for anyone serious about setting up or developing their business.

Speaking about the decision to hire Sir Richard Branson, Vishal said:

“I’m sure you can imagine just how proud I am to even be mentioned in the same sentence as Sir Richard. He has inspired me and countless other entrepreneurs across the world to get started in business and to shoot for the stars. As soon as we completed our first major event (ILSG 2010), the team and I began planning for an even bigger one and we knew that there was only one person that we wanted to work with.

“There are so many people out there that crave the opportunity to release the huge potential within their businesses and in turn within themselves and we want to help them to do that through Business 2012. With Sir Richard confirmed as our keynote speaker I am 100% confident we can do just that.”

Speaking about Business 2012, Sir Richard Branson said:
“I can confirm that I will be at Business 2012, being interviewed live on stage and answering questions and tweets. No one has a monopoly on good ideas and events like this can open the door to greater connections and business opportunities: something we all need during these challenging times.”

“I hope the audience will be full of people who run their own businesses, hopefully together, we can come up with some ideas to make our businesses even stronger than they are today.”

SYNCHRONISER, a project sponsored by the European Commission (EC) under Framework Programme 7 (FP7), and supported by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies (MCIT), Government of India, today organised a Panel Discussion titled “Future ICT Priorities for India” at India’s IT capital, Bangalore. The outcome of this high powered panel discussion on future ICT priorities of India is incorporated in the report titled “Trend study on India’s R&D Focus in the ICT Domain in the next ten years”. This report will be submitted to the Dept of IT, Government of India and the European Commission providing an actionable roadmap for policy coordination and alignment to promote joint ICT research and innovation.

Explaining the importance of identification of priorities and the role played by SYNCHRONISER, Ms Katja Legisa, Project Manager of EU projects in India said, “To predict what a country will do in the near future is a big challenge. Nevertheless, given the growing importance of the ICT in India and world across, internalization of the ICT activity and collaboration between countries in this domain is becoming essential. For reaching this objective, identification and agreement of ICT priorities, first within each country and then between cooperating countries, is the first stepping stone.”

SYNCHRONISER project partner from the Indian Institute of Science, Dr Mary Mathew, Associate Professor at the Department of Management Studies conducted a survey by interviewing 30 ICT visionaries from across India and analyzed the data gathered from these interviews using the Delphi Method. Dr Mathew presented the result of her analysis and also moderated the panel session. This interactive brainstorming discussion brought consensus on the future ICT research priorities for India recommended by the visionaries in the survey.

Speaking at the occasion Ms Mary Mathew said, “Two areas of focus emerged from our dialogues with the visionary sample. First, were Core Information and Communciation Technologies, including Internet access, embedded systems, sensors, cloud computing, for example, and second were technologies related to sectors, the first sector of focus being ICT for health care followed by ICT for energy.”

The objective of SYNCHRONISER is to contribute to the EU-India policy dialogue in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) domain for better policy coordination and enhanced collaborative research activities. This objective is being realized by providing recommendations on future joint ICT research priority areas and identifying long term research priorities for India that will be matched with the EU priorities.

SYNCHRONISER project partner EIRC Consulting, Bangalore co-organised this Panel Discussion as part of the project with Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC), under the aegis of IT & ITES Expert Committee during their one day Seminar on Industry Academia Connect named ‘SAM – VRIDDHI : Partnering for Progress’.

The mom and kids segment is growing by leaps and bounds in India. Recent trends indicate that the Indian organised [...]

The mom and kids segment is growing by leaps and bounds in India. Recent trends indicate that the Indian organised retail segment for mother and child is pegged at Rs 100 billion. The kids’ retail market, which is growing at a rate of 35 per cent annually, has been estimated at Rs 20,000 crore. In addition to these figures, there is also a marked shift in the buying decisions of mothers and kids. It has been observed that today mothers and kids are not only buying apparel, home décor products and toys, but are also playing a crucial role in buying everything from automobiles to electronics. Holding such a huge business potential, the segment still operates in a niche market.

Seeing the huge demand in the mom and kids’ category, Next Gen Publishing and Fusion Events have planned to organise multiple Mom & Kid Shows across country. All the details pertaining to the event are available on their website www.momandkid.in. To start with, the event will be held in early 2012 at Gurgaon (January 27-29), Indore (February 10-12), Jaipur (February 24-26) and Ahmedabad (March 2-4). This event will then be taken to other cities in the second phase.

The Mom & Kid Show is a three-day event, which presents a great platform for brands to showcase their products and directly interact with this new category of decision makers. It also offers a unique opportunity for the marketers to understand what appeals to them and what drives them to buy a product. The event will exhibit various products such as baby and child clothing, accessories and footwear, child-safety products and child monitoring equipment, organic baby and toddler products, nursery furniture and equipment, accessories for breastfeeding, weaning, feeding, bathing and grooming, toys, games and educational stimulants, white goods and electronics, automobiles, early and primary education, pre-school and after-school enrichment education and care centres, spas, learning centres for music, dance, sport, languages, art, etc, personalised gifts and accessories, financial services and insurance, as well as avenues for leisure, fitness, re-training, life-coaching, health and beauty, slimming centres, etc.

The Mom & Kid Show will also provide an interactive platform for mothers to solve their various queries through counselling sessions, public talks and workshops, as well as participate in fun contests and entertainment activities. The fair will have various stalls wherein visitors can see and buy various products. The event is targeted at expecting mothers, working mothers, homemakers, lifestyle-conscious parents and kids of 0-12 years.

The event is being hosted by Next Gen Publishing Ltd, one of the leading publishing houses of the country, working on the commitment of offering the finest in the field of publishing. Their B2C titles such as Car India, Mother & Baby India (licensed from Bauer Media), Bike India, Computer Active (licensed from Incisive Media), Smart Photography and Ideal Home & Garden, have not only set trends in their respective categories, but they have also earned considerable critical acclaim in the industry.

Speaking about the event, Mr Amit Tewari, Editor/Publisher at Next Gen Publishing, says, “The inspiration for the event came from the fact that the role of today’s mothers and kids is not just restricted to their personal buys. Today, they have a strong say in buying everything, from a home to gadgets. But still the marketers are not able to tap this segment fully. It has also been seen recently that all the major retail players are coming up with a wide range of mom and kids products. From working women to housewives, everyone wants to enjoy their motherhood, and thus the companies are innovating various products especially for them. This calls for interaction with the target audience, which this event will help all such companies do. The Mom & Kid Show will help to bridge the gap between the marketers and the buyers.”

The event’s co-organiser Fusion Events Pvt Ltd is one of India’s leading event mcompanies. Fusion Events has the credit of working for reputed shows including SaReGaMaPa, DID Li’l champs, Star India, Sony Pictures and other national events. Fusion has also handled large-format events such as BAJA SAE India, MP Establishment day, etc.

Explaining the concept of the event, Mr Alok Tilwankar, CEO, Fusion Events Pvt Ltd, says, “When Next Gen approached us, they wanted to capitalise on the existing opportunities in the mother and baby segment. Which is why we conceptualised an event exclusively for the segment. Understanding the market scenario, we also observed that so far no such event has been done anywhere in India and that’s why we planned to make the Mom & Kid Show a nationwide event. In the first leg, the event will be organised across four of India’s fastest developing cities – Gurgaon, Indore, Jaipur and Ahmedabad. Later, it’ll be taken to other emerging and metro cities too.” Talking about the promotion plan, he further adds, “There will be an extensive PR campaign, on-ground activities in malls and other high footfall areas. Apart from that, a poster campaign, OOH campaign, online promotions as well as print and radio ads have been planned to promote the event at the national level. Currently, we have created a completely dedicated website – www.momandkid.in – to help customers, prospective participants and sponsors to know more about the event. In the coming days, there will also be a full-fledged portal for the event as well as an Internet property. Speaking on the overall experience of the event at the venue, Alok explains how they have planned various zones in the exhibition area wherein they will conduct various workshops, counselling sessions and expert lectures from eminent personalities of the field.

The Mom & Kid Show definitely promises to be a unique experience for all participants.

Accelerating India’s Economic Growth: Is Manufacturing a Prime Driver?

Hyderabad… 16 December 2011: The three day 5th National Conference is being held at the Vignana Jyothi Institute of Management, Hyderabad, on India’s economic growth, probably could not have been timed better with the Rupee sliding to record low. Under pressure from the global financial uncertainty and weak domestic economic data the Indian Rupees fate is yet to be ascertained, raising serious concerns and speculations. Though the continuing slide has finally forced RBI to intervene but the quantum of intervention is still unknown.

With the Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee blaming the “huge capital outflow” as a reason for the recent slide in rupee, the pertinent question is. What is the way out? Is Manufacturing a Prime Driver?

As a recent debate in The Economist, suggest that 76% participants felt that an economy cannot succeed without a big manufacturing base. Yet as current studies indicate the Indian manufacturing sector is growing at a dismal rate when compared to China though the resources available and factors involved doesn’t have significant difference when compared to absolute terms. So what is actually stopping India from becoming a globally competitive nation? Is it the indirect tax or the weak support infrastructure? Or is it the policies &regulations?

The above and whole lot of issues constraining India’s growth is being deliberated and thrashed to thread-bare in this conference, by eminent speakers, policy makers & researchers from the Industry and the academia. Prof. Durga Prasad, faculty and Dean, VJIM is upbeat about the whole thing and said, “The current surge in manufacturing sectorsin the national economic space is witnessing a wave of growth and is a great opportunity for India Inc. to take advantage of this shift. As a nation we are not just good in the services sector but have great manufacturing & product management skill sets”.

Few of the eminent business leaders of Hyderabad like Anantha Reddy Ch, – MD, Pennar Industries; KoteswarRao – CEO, Cluster Pulse; Mysalah K – GM (Production) BHEL; Venugopal N – VP Reliance Power; Sai Kumar MV – Dir-HR Dr. Reddy’s Lab; Venu Madhav – Design Engineer – Coca Cola, Atlanta attended the conference to brainstorm. Ravi Kumar J CFO – L&T Metro Hyd Ltd shall grace the valedictory session alongwith Prof. SubbaRao AV from University of Ottawa, Canada. The Conference will conclude on Saturday.

The lush green sprawling campus and the architectural splendor of the institute is a perfect setup for the winter conference. Founded in 1993, VJIM has been consistently listed among the top B-Schools of India. Known for value based education system and industry driven curriculum supported by dedicated governing body members and initiatives like this once again establishes the exemplary role the institute plays in issues affecting the industry and the nation.

Dr Mr Subir Gokarn, Deputy Governor of RBI MONETA has created a platform to build tomorrow’s CFOs

MUMBAI, December 9: Moneta: Think. Invest. Win, an annual event, organised by the students of R. A. Podar College of Commerce and Economics to drive industry interaction with academia and to create a platform to build tomorrow’s CFOs. Mr Subir Gokarn, Deputy Governor of RBI was the Chief Guest for closing ceremony, while Mr Yatrik Vin, Senior Vice-President – Finance & Accounts of NSE, Mr J B Bhoria, Regional Director of RBI and Mrs Supriya Patnaik, General Manager of RBI were the guest of honour.

While addressing students during the concluding day of annual fest, MONETA 2011 at R. A. Podar College of Commerce and Economics, here at Matunga, Mr Subir Gokarn, Deputy Governor of RBI said that India’s future won’t simply be determined by powerful Chief Executing Officers and political leaders, but by its young people.

“You are the future leaders, innovators, educators, entrepreneurs and organising such financial extravaganza like MONETA, enables students the ability and the financial acumen to handle various situations that may arise in the increasingly complex financial markets of today. This event has given an opportunity for the students to create a platform to build tomorrow’s CFOs and financial events like MONETA is the need of an hour,” he further said.

At Podar, according to Dr Mrs Shobana Vasudevan, Principle of R. A. Podar College of Commerce and Economics they strongly believe that real progress of India lies in development of rural population. “The key to this progress is connecting the villages with the modern world and bringing out the untapped potential of the larger mass. To maintain this gap, the students of Podar have resolved to impact financial literacy to those who do not have access to information but the urge to learn,” she stressed.

Earlier, Mr Subir Gokarn, Deputy Governor of RBI gave away a winner’s trophy to St Xaviers College of Arts and Commerce, Kolkata, who were declared winners of MONETA 2011. Bhopal Institute of Social Sciences were declared as the first runner-up, while B. K. Mazumdar Institute of Management, Ahmedabad were the second runner-up of MONETA 2011.

According to Mr Parth Popat, Chairman of MONETA 2011, Podar Moneta 2011 aspires to inspire students to cannily manage financial resources at their disposal through systematic planning, diligent application and judicial revision. “Our vision is to connect the theoretical knowledge of students to the real world and bring out potential financial wizards from amongst the student community, while our mission is to create a training ground for budding investors without being exposed to monetary loss,” he said.

New Delhi, December 6, 2011.- RS & Co Law Offices, a law firm having its principal office at New Delhi, [...]

New Delhi, December 6, 2011.- RS & Co Law Offices, a law firm having its principal office at New Delhi, held a meet on December 5, 2011 at New Delhi on protection of intellectual property rights in collective marks, in the particular context of small and medium size enterprises. Rai S. Mittal, Partner, RS & Co Law Offices, while explaining the nature and character of a collective mark, pointed out that the owner of such mark may be either an association of which certain enterprises are members or any other entity including a public institution or a cooperative. Collective mark was described as a mark or sign which distinguishes the geographical origin, material, mode of manufacture or other common characteristics of goods or services of such enterprises which use the same (collective) mark. A collective trade mark can be used by a variety of traders, rather than just one individual concern, provided that the trader belongs to the association, and in this respect collective trade marks also differ from certification marks in as much as collective trade marks may be used by particular members of the organization which owns them, while certification marks may be used by anybody who complies with the standards defined by the owner of the particular certification mark. Use of collective marks like Basmati (rice) and Alphanso (mango) was discussed as also the “CA” device used by the Institute of Chartered Accountants, the mark “CPA” used to indicate members of the Society of Certified Public Accountants and the marks of various confederated lobby groups.

At the conference, Advocate Parvez A. Khan, Associate Advocate RS & Co Law Offices, while explaining the relevant intellectual property laws of several countries and in particular India, submitted that usually the owner of a collective mark is responsible for ensuring compliance with certain standards by its members which are usually fixed in the regulations concerning the use of the collective mark. Most countries, including India, require that a registration application for a collective mark be accompanied by a copy of the regulations which govern the use of the collective mark.

Mr. Rai S. Mittal, while addressing the gathering, further added that collective marks not only help to market products domestically and internationally, but also provide a framework for cooperation between local enterprises. The creation of the collective mark can go hand in hand with the development of certain standards and criteria and a common strategy. In this sense, collective mark is a powerful tool for local development in as much as Associations of SMEs may register collective marks in order to jointly market the products of a group of SMEs and thereby enhance product recognition. Collective marks may be used together with the individual trademark of the producer of a given product. This allows companies to differentiate their own products from those of competitors, while at the same time benefiting from the confidence of the consumers in products or services offered under the collective mark. Collective mark may therefore represent useful instruments for SMEs assisting them to overcome some of the challenges associated with small size and isolation in the market place.
The usual provisions applicable to trade mark infringement apply to collective marks as well. Registration of collective trade mark is not mandatory but is advisable, for enabling action for infringement rather than action of passing off which involves lengthy procedures to succeed. Also were discussed case studies on “Chirimoya Cumbe” and “APDL Cajamarca” for a practical illustration of how collective marks work in practice. In addition, The Parma Ham and the Association of Certified Public Accountants cases were also deliberated at the meet.

SUMMARY

RS & Co Law Offices, a law firm having its principal office at New Delhi, held a meet on December 5, 2011 at New Delhi on protection of intellectual property rights in collective marks and their benefits, in the particular context of small and medium size enterprises

The Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2011 brings together leaders from around the world to discuss how to keep pace with a changing world

New Delhi, India, November 28, 2011 – The ninth edition of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of December, 2011 in New Delhi. The annual Summit has become a powerful forum bringing together leaders from all walks of life and encouraging interaction and debate on the burning issues of the moment. As the Summit enters its ninth year, it has grown in both size and stature to emerge as one of the region’s most anticipated conferences.
The theme of the Summit this year is ‘Keeping Pace With a Changing World”. On the occasion, Mr. Sanjoy Narayan, Editor in Chief of Hindustan Times, noted – “In modern India, change is constant. In the last two decades, it is said, India has changed a lot. So has the world around us. […] The changes that India faces are, thus, on several fronts – some domestic, others global. And all of these changes throw up for India, the challenge of keeping pace with them. It is with this in mind that the 9th edition of the annual Hindustan Times’ Leadership Summit this year offers a platform for debating these issues, to which there are, of course, no easy answers.”

The inaugural session at the Summit will be that of Mr. Pranab Mukherjee who will share his invaluable thoughts on the opportunities and challenges facing India in an ever changing world. His session will be followed by an innovative session on education trends from around the world – “The Education Prism: Global Perspectives”. Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission of India, Dr. John A. Quelche CBE, Distinguished Professor of International Management, Vice President and Dean, CEIBS and Mr. Gregory W. Cappelli, Co-CEO, Apollo Group and Chairman, Apollo Global, will be speaking at this session. The Keynote Address of the day will be given by Tun Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, and he will be speaking about “The Challenges of Change in the 21st Century”, a subject with which he is intimately familiar.

The other speakers on day one will be Dr. Kaushik Basu and Mr. Norman Pearlstine, Chief Content Officer, Bloomberg L.P, who will be discussing the global economic crisis; husband-wife team Carol and Ken Adelman, who make up Movers & Shakespeares, will be sharing management lessons from Shakespeare’s plays in a repeat of their hugely successful session from the World Economic Forum at Davos earlier this year.

The highly anticipated penultimate session of the day will see economic maverick, Dr. Steven Levitt, author of the popular Freakonomics books and professor at the University of Chicago, share his unique perspective in a session entitled, “Unconventional Thinking for an Unpredictable World”.

The closing session on the first day will look at the hot button topic of the Arab Summer and will see Dr. Paul Salem, Director, Carnegie Middle East Center and Emile Hokayem, Senior Fellow for Regional Security, The Internal Institute for Strategic Studies, discussing its causes and consequences.

The second day of the Summit will start with the keynote address by L.K. Advani, who will share his views on “India’s Yatra into the Future”. Mr. Advani’s session will be followed by a special session led by the former Prime Ministers of Australia and Spain – Hon. John Howard and Jose Maria Aznar, on the recent social and economic upheavals around the globe.

Actor Director Farhan Akthar and actor Vidya Balan will chat with Vir Sanghvi in the ever popular Hindi Film Industry Session.

The final session of the summit will be addressed by Chief Ministers Sheila Dixit (Delhi), Prithviraj Chavan (Maharashtra) and Dr. Raman Singh (Chattisgarh), who will speak about the connection between Personality Power and Good Governance.
