Dr. Ram Babu, CEO, General Carbon in India will speak on past successes in carbon credit generation and future scenario [...]

Dr. Ram Babu, CEO, General Carbon in India will speak on past successes in carbon credit generation and future scenario and potential in Asia at the upcoming Clean Power Asia conference and expo in Bangkok, from 28-30 June. Dr Babu is one of a distinguished list of high-level, global energy experts who will address some 300 delegates at the only event focusing on both renewable and cleaner fossil power.

Clean Power Asia will also give Thailand the opportunity to showcase its green track record and showcase the many investment opportunities the renewable energy industry offers. “Thailand is committed to the low-carbon pathway”, says Dr. Twarath Sutabutr, Deputy Director-General, Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency, in Thailand’s Ministry of Energy.

With regards to investment opportunities in Thailand, the country’s ministry of Energy says alternative energy resources provide a practical link between the country’s agricultural competitive advantages and its domestic energy needs. Dr. Sutabutr explains: “Thailand is committed to the Low-Carbon pathway, as stated in the new National Economic and Social Development Plan (11th plan), due to the fact that Thailand is a net-importer of fossil fuels. The only way to be independent from the importation is to go along the “Green and Clean Energy” corridor, including Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency and maybe Nuclear Energy.”

Thailand’s ministry of Energy and the local utilities, EGAT and PEA ENCOM, are officially supporting Clean Power Asia, during which some 300 delegates will hear from power experts from more than 14 countries in the region who will report back on renewable and cleaner fossil power projects including from Thailand, Singapore, Korea, China, the Philippines, India, Australia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, India, Pakistan and Iran.

Thailand’s current steps towards the Clean Energy pathway
The two site visits on the programme of Clean Power Asia will offer delegates the rare opportunity to explore two of the most prominent solar power projects in Thailand, namely the Ned Project, which is the world’s largest silicon thin-film solar farm, and the BCP solar power project.

Renewable investment opportunities in Thailand include:

Ethanol: The Energy Ministry has already short listed 15 local biomass power plants for foreign company investment, under the United Nations’ Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol.

Solar Cells: Thailand continues to make significant strides in solar generated electric capacity. Currently, much of Thailand’s solar-panels are made for export, but solar energy development now also offers great potential for filling a domestic energy demand, particularly in remote rural and mountainous regions.

Wind Power: The Thai government offers subsidies for electricity produced by wind power. In a recent example of this technology’s potential, a tapioca flour processing plant, eliminated the 8,000 liters/day of fuel oil formerly used in the production process, and cut 40% in production costs.

Biodiesel: The government has a target of 4.25 million litres/day of biodiesel, for a 7% consumption substitute of diesel by the year 2011. Palm oil, one of the most readily available inputs for biodiesel production can be found in abundant quantities in Thailand.

More highlights from the Clean Power Asia programme include:
Renewable power:
• China WindPower plans to build and operate up to 800 MW of new wind farms by 2012
• Keys to success from Southeast Asia’s largest solar power plant project in Thailand

India, the largest democratic state, has the fifth largest electricity grid and third largest Transmission & Distribution network respectively in the world. However, due to the dramatically increasing economic activities and rising electricity consumption, there has been a significant challenge to face for Indian government. Origins of India’s smart grid efforts are multi-factorial in nature but primarily concern three main issues which are the subject of current or planned government backed initiatives: 1) Balance the supply and demand of the power market; 2) Electrify a large segment of its rural population to receive electrical services; 3) Optimize electrical usage by being able to manage loads and mitigate operating inefficiencies. Furthermore, central government involvement in the smart grid has expanded beyond the confines of Ministry of Power into an inter-department task force known as India Smart Grid Task Force.

“Under my stewardship, we wish to evolve a future roadmap for development of Smart Grid in India aided by the most modern and latest technologies in the field.” said by Shri Sam Pitroda, the Chairman of India Smart Grid Task Force who is confirmed to be the opening keynote speaker of World Smart Gird Conference Series India Week. He is planning to present the role of India Smart Grid Task Force, national smart grid initiatives, and India’s smart grid roadmap and strategy in the environment of emerging economic.

Meantime, Mr. Pramod Deo, the Chairman of Central Electricity Regulatory Commission which takes responsible of tariff, legal and regulatory issues, will present the regulatory challenges and opportunities for India Smart Grid.

Not only two senior speakers above, but also some main local utilities, such as Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM), Reliance Infrastructure, NDPL, APCPDCL, and BSES have also be arranged to speak in this event for their own perspectives towards smart grid.

World Smart Grid Conference Series-India Week 2011, to be held on September 13th to 16th in Mumbai, is a unique event for you to attain deep understandings on India’s smart grid initiatives, roadmap, regulatory environment, ongoing pilots of local utilities, network local and international smart grid industry executives and share insights on the future market developments.

The conference is vendor-neutral, product-neutral, and platform-neutral with highly intense interaction between delegates, and allows for real discussion and debate, not simply a series of “product presentations”.

Legacy power grids embody certain inherent deficiencies that have made their services unreliable. Increasing demand at the consumer end is putting a strain on the existing grids, leading to frequent blackouts and brownouts. Customer dissatisfaction resulting from poor service quality has not been addressed properly. Smart grids are expected to provide a practical solution to the problem. The smart grid technologies will help reduce the power losses incurred by the utilities as well as improving its distribution efficiency. Smart grids will transform the consumers into major stakeholders in the functioning of the grid. The power customers will not only consume power but will contribute towards the generation of power for the grid. However, a lot needs to be done to allay the apprehensions in the minds of power customers regarding the security of power usage data. Power utilities in the US are already facing allegations of overcharging customers through smart meters. The utilities need to come up with a proper strategy to convince the customers of the long-term benefits of rolling out smart grids.

The smart grid will empower consumers by providing information on the power consumed by them. This will help the customers to understand their power usage patterns and take adequate measures to reduce expenditure on power.

Indian and China are witnessing high GDP growth and correspondingly their energy appetite has also been growing at a fast pace. However, both countries have historically been deprived of energy resources. As a result, both the countries rely heavily on imports to satisfy their domestic energy needs.

China’s crude oil consumption grew from 4,8717 thousand barrels per day in 2001 to reach 7,920.3 thousand barrels per day in 2009 at a CAGR of 6.3%. It is expected that the consumption of crude oil will reach 9,136 thousand barrels per day by 2015. However, the domestic production of crude oil was almost constant due to the limited oil reserves in the country. The crude oil production in China grew at a slow pace from 3,1354 thousand barrels per day in 2001 to reach 3,850.9 thousand barrels per day in 2009 at a CAGR of 2.6%. It is expected that the production of crude oil will reach 4,003.3 thousand barrels per day by 2015.

Similarly, India’s crude oil consumption grew from 1,317.8 thousand barrels per day in 2001 to reach 2,513.5 thousand barrels per day in 2009 at a CAGR of 8.4%. It is expected that the consumption of crude oil will reach 3,507.6 thousand barrels per day by 2015. However, the domestic production of crude oil was almost constant due to the limited oil reserves in the country. The crude oil production in India grew at a very slow pace from 631.9 thousand barrels per day in 2001 to reach 662.4 thousand barrels per day in 2009 at a CAGR of 0.6%. It is expected that the production of crude oil will reach 692.1 thousand barrels per day by 2015.
