Burgeoning Retail and Manufacturing Segments Trigger Demand Spike for Logistics Technologies in India MUMBAI, India, 12th January, 2011 – India’s [...]

Burgeoning Retail and Manufacturing Segments Trigger Demand Spike for Logistics Technologies in India

MUMBAI, India, 12th January, 2011 – India’s logistics technologies market is growing steadily, with the upswing in demand from the thriving logistics, retail, and manufacturing sectors, as well as government promotion. As the booming manufacturing and retail sectors are the major users of these technologies, sustained demand from these areas is sure. For instance, Wal-Mart has made it mandatory for its suppliers to deploy radio frequency identification (RFID). India’s status as a major sourcing nation for the world’s leading retailers is also ramping up demand.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.automotive.frost.com), Strategic Analysis of Logistics Technologies Market in India, finds that the market earned revenues of over $246 million in 2010 and is expected to cross $600 million by 2015.

“Until recently, the logistics industry was highly unorganized, comprising predominantly medium- and small-sized logistics service providers (LSPs),” says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst. “However, the trend is changing with the increase in number of organized LSPs and improvement in the services offered by them through third party logistics and fourth party logistics.”

The Government has played a supportive role by introducing the Goods and Services Tax (GST), enabling seamless credit across the entire supply chain. To obtain the cutting edge in the market, companies are adopting these technologies to improve supply chain management. India’s logistics technology market is set to grow at 19.8 percent between 2010 and 2015.

Although the prospects for the market look upbeat, there are some challenges. Technologies such as RFID, warehouse management systems (WMS), and transport management systems (TMS) are significantly expensive, making them unaffordable for a majority of LSPs and end users. This has deterred the growth of the Indian logistics technology market.

The import duty on RFID hardware is high, further increasing the final price of the already expensive technology solution. The price-sensitive nature of the Indian consumers prevents them from opting for such technologies.

“To remain competitive in this marketplace, WMS and TMS providers must offer customized software, keeping price sensitive Indian consumers in mind,” says the Analyst. “Building awareness among LSPs and end users on the tangible benefits these solutions confer is essential.”

The use of 2D barcoding is steadily rising and 3D barcoding is expected to gain prominence in the near future. Participants in this space must target these lucrative areas and fine-tune their strategies to cash in on the opportunities that abound in this market.

Strata Geosystems India Private Ltd launches StrataWeb

Strata Geosystems India Pvt Ltd has added “StrataWeb” to its range of soil reinforcement products. StrataWeb is a light-weight, expandable, three-dimensional honeycomb-like cellular confinement system, which acts as an erosion control barrier and also as a foundation reinforcement mat for improvement of bearing capacity of weak soils.

StrataWeb when in-filled with compacted soil creates a new composite entity that possesses enhanced mechanical and geotechnical properties. When the soil contained within a geocell is subjected to pressure, it results in high lateral stresses and resistance on the stiff cell walls, thereby decreasing the punching effect, increasing the bearing capacity and a reduced peak settlement. Hoop stress resistance generated by the cell walls increases the shear strength of the confined infill, thus creating a stiff mattress and distributing the load over a wider area. Active earth pressure generated in each individual cell is resisted by an equivalent passive earth pressure generated by the adjoining cells. StrataWeb being textured, it increases the vertical frictional resistance thereby reducing the stress reaching the lower strata.

StrataWeb reinforcement system reduces infill quantities by up to 50% while utilizing locally available inferior quality soil or recycled material as its infill, thereby reducing consumption of natural resources, reduction in carbon footprint, reducing project time, labour and costs. Further it allows fast, all weather installation, easy handling, zero wastage, zero maintenance, etc.

StrataWeb also provides ecological and aesthetic benefits for earth stabilization, by maintaining the greenery and promoting vegetation growth. It is extremely environment-friendly since it does not disintegrate or pollute surroundings. It allows for natural drainage thus preventing the build-up of hydrostatic pressures.

Applications:

Load support for paved roads (National & State Highways), unpaved roads (access roads, service roads, haul roads), railways, etc.

Bearing capacity improvement for soft soils, like, container yards, parking areas, transmission towers, platforms, footpaths, casting yards, etc.

Slope protection, erosion control, channel linings, embankment protection, slope stabilization, etc.

Earth stabilization and retaining walls

Landfills and reservoirs

“StrataWeb adds the fourth dimension of time – longevity – to the conventional three dimensions of length, width and height. It provides a clear value proposition and with be an excellent addition to our existing product range” said Mr. Narendra Dalmia.

Logistics industry must create additional capacity to meet rising demand: G K Vasan

The logistics industry is called upon to create adequate capacity to meet the rising demand for multi-modal freight movement fuelled by rapid national GDP growth. Stating this in his special address at the two-day Logistics Summit 2010 on ‘Building India’s Logistics Infrastructure – Investment, Operation, Growth’, organised by CII Institute of Logistics in New Delhi, Mr G K Vasan, Minister for Shipping, Government of India, said the key challenges for the industry are the infrastructural bottlenecks and the high logistics cost which at 13-14% of GDP is way above the level of 7-8% of GDP in the developed countries.

Mr Vasan said the Government has taken several key measures to support the growth of the logistics infrastructure, such as, opening up the industry to 100% FDI, removal of Central Sales Tax (CST), introduction of Value Added Tax (VAT), promotion of multi-modal transportation network, and public private partnerships (PPP).

Initiatives such as the National Highway Development Project, inter-connectivity of the 12 major ports, enhancing the port handling capacities, eastern and western rail freight corridor that adds up to 2,700 km rail lines, higher rail freight handling capacities, and the Dedicated Delhi-Mumbai Corridor have also catalysed the growth of the logistics industry, he said.

Mr Vasan said the Shipping Trade Practices Bill when legislated will usher in a more transparent and efficient regime for the shipping industry. He said the Government is making every effort to facilitate higher investments in the logistics infrastructure development.

On this occasion, CII Institute of Logistics and Global Coalition for Efficient Logistics (GECL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), whereby GECL will partner the Indian logistics industry in the adoption of digital soft infrastructure. Mr Sridhar. Vice Chairman, CII Institute of Logistics and Capt. Samuel Salloum, Co-Chairman, GECL, signed the MoU.

The minister also released a report on Building India’s Logistics Infrastructure, prepared by KPMG.

Earlier, Mr Cyrus Guzder, Chairman, CII National Logistics Council & CMD, AFL Pvt Ltd, said in his address that infrastructural bottlenecks and process lags in logistics are costing the national economy around $50 billion.

On the infrastructure side, Mr Guzder said that the rail infrastructure is not properly aligned with the new production and distribution centres. As a result, there is excess dependence on road infrastructure for freight movement.

He said that while the Government is developing 5-7 expressways of 100-300 km, the current need is for 20 expressways. There is additional need for 750 new last mile road links and a considerable number of last mile rail links. Multi-modal logistics parks also need to be developed in tandem with the growing demand.

He expressed hope that the formation of the Central Logistics Council will help the industry in bridging the infrastructure gaps.

Dr Mark Drabenstott, Secretary General, GECL, in his address said that the MoU between CII Institute of Logistics and GECL will set the ground for the Indian logistics industry to adopt the latest digital platform for driving global trade and commerce. Tools like this are expected to help reduce trade costs by 30% and business operations costs by 15%.

Dr Drabenstott pointed out that the digital infrastructure will be highly beneficial to the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in growing their global market reach. This will also have a major bearing on India’s efforts to rebalance its external trade.

Mr Manish Saigal, Partner, KPMG, in his address said that the Indian logistics industry is close to an inflexion point and the need of the hour is world class, scalable capacity. Currently, supply is severely lagging demand. To address this, mobilisation of financial resources attains critical importance.

Mr Saigal said that the industry consolidation will support the growth of a hub-and-spoke model, which in turn will require huge financial resources. However, the key challenges are that currently the logistics industry is highly fragmented (the top 10 companies account for a mere 2% of industry), limited scale of outsourcing, and large government ownership of assets (50-60% on the whole).

Sub-scale operations and sub-quality services need to be addressed, he said, adding that areas like coastal and inland waterways infrastructure demand the greater attention of the policy makers.

Looking ahead, he said the opportunity lies in promoting new segments, augmenting the existing segments and changing the paradigm in the mature segments.

Mr B Sridhar, Chairman, Logistics Sunmit 2010 & Vice Chairman, CII Institute of Logistics & Director, Bengal Tiger Line (India) Pvt Ltd, in his opening remarks said that the CII Institute of Logistics is focusing attention on skills development for the industry, promotion of low carbon and green supply chain, and development of soft infrastructure for logistics industry.

On the skills development side, he said that a certification programme for supply chain professionals is being developed.

Mr Vineet Aggarwal, Member, CII National Logistics Council & Executive Director, Transport Corporation of India, proposed the vote of thanks and concluded the inaugural session of the two-day conference.

“We have tied up with the Ministry of Railways, Government of India for providing us land owned by them. We are inviting private sector participation and investment in establishing diagnostic facilities, hospitals, specialized and super specialty care centres, including medical. ” said Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare minister at the CII 7th India Health Summit 2010 “Healthcare 3.0″ .Honorable Minster emphasized that we need to look at PPP as a synergistic arrangement, which ensures that the huge private sector also contributes to public public health goals.

Though there are inherent differences of approach but the private sector is larger than the corporate sector, 58% of hospitals, 29% of all beds and 81% of all doctors, 77% of outpatient cases in rural areas and 80 % in the urban areas are in the private sector. He also added that the NSSO 60th Round 2004-5 says that more than Rs 3000/ expenditure in Government hospitals in rural areas during every hospitalization is met out of pocket. This out of pocket expenditure in the urban areas and in private hospitals is 2-3 times higher and we need to find solutions for this.

Dr Naresh Trehan , Chairman, CII National Committee on Healthcare & CMD, Medanta-The Medicity said that we need to work on infrastructure, accessibility and human capital and we need to start working on these things right away.

Mumbai, March 25, 2010: Reliance Venture Asset Management India’s first and largest corporate venture capital firm and an arm of the Reliance ADA Group, today announced that it has successfully completed the first round of venture funding in Reverse Logistics Co, a technology enabled end-to-end reverse supply chain solutions company. The announcement is in line with the company’s recent rebranding and widening focus on investing in disruptive and sustainable business models with a sector agnostic philosophy. Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sherpalo are co-investors in this round of funding in Reverse Logistics Co. along with Reliance Venture Asset Management.

Founded in 2008, Reverse Logistics Co. uses its proprietary technology to help its customers reduce supply chain costs by over 25%, increase asset recovery by over 100%, improve productivity by over 10%, and get a 100% customer satisfaction while growing profitability exponentially.

Said Harshal J. Shah, CEO, and Reliance Venture Asset Management on the development, “The reverse logistics space is a fairly untapped but promising sector, and will revolutionize efficiency levels of the fragmented Indian supply chain. As an opportunistic investor, we see an immense potential in the industry which is emerging to be an essential part of the business supply chain network across the manufacturing and services industries. Reverse Logistics Co. with its expert management backing will clearly contribute to the India growth story and compete with global compatriots and we are excited to partner them.”

Hitendra Chaturvedi, Managing Director and CEO, Reverse Logistics Co. said, “We are thankful to Reliance Venture Asset Management and our other investors for recognizing the potential of this industry and Reverse Logistics Co.’s attempt to make reverse supply chain truly mainstream. With industries across sectors turning to cost optimization with the intent to remain eco-friendly, we will continue to offer optimum solutions to bridge the gap between the end consumer and the manufacturer.”

Sandeep Murthy, Partner, Sherpalo Ventures and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers said, “Reverse Logistics Co is a great example of the next breed of companies that will emerge in India. They are effectively leveraging technology to drive value and cost savings while catering to a very large unmet customer need. We are excited to join Hitendra and the Reverse Logistics team in building a global reverse logistics business.”

Reverse logistics refers to the backward supply chain network where a product moves from the end consumer to the manufacturer for reuse, disposal or surplus sale purposes with the rationale to increase overall efficiencies. In developed countries, the reverse supply chain management is outsourced and focused to increase the overall shareholder value. However, India is still near the bottom when it comes to supply chain efficiencies – estimates suggest that 3% of its GDP is lost to supply chain inefficiencies and low compliance with the government’s e-waste regulations. Hence with its growing importance, Indian companies are now looking to manage this network as a strategic and critical business area According to market studies, the Indian reverse logistics industry is pegged at 10-15 billion USD which includes the secondary market supplying spares and second hand materials.

Indian businesses to benefit from BDP’s revolutionary new technology and expanded service offerings

New Delhi, Delhi, India, March 5, 2010 / IndiaPRLine / — With its class-leading technology and global customer base, BDP International (BDP) is set to become a major player in India’s logistics sector, following the establishment of its new joint venture company.

US-based BDP is one of the world’s largest privately owned transport and logistics companies, with revenues in excess of US$1.6 billion and a presence in more than 120 countries. BDP has built its reputation working for some of the world’s largest corporations including DOW, DuPont, Johnson & Johnson, Marks and Spencer and Revlon.

The new subsidiary company – BDP Global Logistics (India) Private Limited – is a joint venture between BDP and local logistics company Unique Global Logistics Private Limited (UGL,) with BDP as the majority partner. The new company will be headquartered in Mumbai with a presence in all major cities in India. And as it has done in each of its other markets, BDP promises to provide a real alternative to the one size fits all approach of its larger competitors by offering its revolutionary technology and exceptional customer service.

Mr Richard Bolte, President and CEO of BDP said, “As more of the world’s largest manufacturers and retailers establish their operations in India, BDP sees an opportunity to contribute to the growing need for specialized logistics services.”

“BDP will target India’s expanding chemicals, life-sciences, healthcare, retail, telecom and manufacturing industries. India is a key focus for BDP over the next decade as the nation emerges as a true economic powerhouse.”

“As a privately held company, BDP has a unique culture that focuses on providing customized solutions for each customer, in contrast to the one size fits all business models of its larger competitors in freight consolidation and freight forwarding. It is our ability to be large enough to handle any job, while keeping the relationship personal that differentiates BDP from the competition,” Mr Bolte said.

One area where BDP is an acknowledged leader is the chemical sector, which accounts for 13 to 14 percent of India’s total exports and 8-9% of total imports. BDP has a track record of working with the largest chemical and petrochemical companies in the world, and the company expects to benefit from the sector’s growth over the next 10 years.

India-based UGL has an established reputation for providing quality logistics services to some of India’s most respected companies. The company has strong expertise in the energy sector including oil and gas.

Mr Pavithran M Kallada, Managing Director of UGL said BDP’s globally recognised brand will ensure the JV’s success. “UGL understands the needs of local Indian companies, while BDP offers global reach and experience. By joining under BDP’s banner, we expect to successfully target the growing number of Indian companies doing business overseas as well as the multinationals coming to India to do business,” Mr Pavithran said.

BDP SmartVu Launched in India

BDP also announced the Indian launch of its revolutionary new technology – BDPSmart Vū – a vendor management tool that provides logistics managers with unparalleled visibility of each stage of an international purchase order.

With BDPSmart Vū, importers can globally manage their upstream vendors and suppliers from one central site. The technology provides information on the status of purchase orders, including the critical initial stages. An early warning system ensures inaccurate data on handling, shipment contents, classification or inefficient transport decisions is brought to the customer’s attention. This means the customer can fix the issue before it becomes a problem, so deadlines are kept and no revenue is lost.

BDPSmart Vū complements BDP’s downstream technology tool, BDPSmart. BDPSmart represents the next generation in supply chain management systems – a real-time track, trace and alert tool that provides global visibility and reporting metrics for all supply chain operators through an easy-access and user-customizable portal.

Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, India
