Cricket has enjoyed a prominent position in the sporting history of Andhra Pradesh, which has produced a number of skilled cricketers, who have gone on to achieve great laurels at the National level.

Speaking about the initiative, Nanduri Srinivas, General Manager, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd said, “Our purpose of getting into grassroots sports tournament is twofold. On one hand, it helps identify and promote young talent and gives them a well charted course to make it big in sports, on the other; it helps us get young children out into sports arenas and grounds. With changes in lifestyle, our children are not spending as much time playing as we would do in our childhood. Also sport promotes social cohesiveness and well-being and hence Coca-Cola has always taken a very active position in sports.” He further added, “This initiative is unique in the sense that, other than the cricket itself, this also has components of coaching, education in sports medicine and nutrition and exposure for youngsters to international cricket programs. We are confident that this tournament can emerge as a very powerful youth mobilization program. We wish all the participating young cricketers from Andhra Pradesh the very best for the tournament”.

Coca-Cola Cricket Cup Under-16 school cricket tournament is a major initiative by Coca-Cola India in partnership with Procam international to promote grass roots cricket in the country. The team will be called ‘Puravankara Bengaluru’, after Puravankara Projects Ltd – one of South India’s leading real estate developers.

The Louis Philippe Cup will see teams from Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Delhi, Gurgaon and Chandigarh battle it out in March 2012 at Karnataka Golf Association, Bengaluru, for the top prize of Rs.36 lakhs. The new event, with its US$250,000 purse will be the richest domestic event on the PGTI calendar. India’s top stars like former Asian tour player of the year Jyoti Randhawa (Gurgaon), European tour regular Shiv Kapur (Delhi), two-time European tour winner S. S. P. Chowrasia (Kolkata), two-time Asian tour winner Gaganjeet Bhullar (Chandigarh), 2011 Asian tour winner Anirban Lahiri (Bengaluru), 2011 Singapore Classic winner Himmat Rai (Gurgaon) and current No. 1 in the Rolex-PGTI rankings, Chiragh Kumar (Delhi) have all confirmed their participation in the extravaganza.

This tournament is going to be a game changer for Indian golf as we never play in the team format in pro golf – its always individual.”

Added Mr. Padamjit Sandhu, Director, PGTI, “We are delighted that a reputed company like Puravankara, which is synonymous with the city of Bengaluru, has come forward to snap up the Bengaluru team. The promoter of the event, Rishi Narain Golf Management is close to finalising deals with a number of other city team sponsors and we will be making other announcements in the coming weeks.”

Mr. Ashish Puravankara, Joint Managing Director, Puravankara Projects Ltd, said, “The Louis Philippe Cup is a tournament of many firsts in India and we are extremely delighted to be a part of this event. With the tournament format and prize money amounting to US$250,000, we are guaranteed to see some exciting and competitive golf from both our pros and amateurs. Golf has always been an integral sport amongst Bengalurueans and now with this well thought-out format, we will be able to see our country’s top amateurs compete against one another while playing alongside our leading pro golfers. With much excitement and support, we wish Puravankara Bengaluru all the best and hope to see them lift the winner’s trophy in March.”

Event promoter and former Asian Games gold medalist, Rishi Narain said, “Puravankara will benefit from the immense appeal this event will have for golf fans. The prospect of India’s two young international stars Anirban Lahiri and Gaganjeet Bhullar playing head-to-head has never happened before in golf and will bring fresh following to the game. Imagine Jyoti Randhawa facing off with Shiv Kapur, both proven successes on the European PGA tour – the quality of play will be inspiring and fun for fans to watch.”

They will be making their team debut at the season finale.

With consistent showing through the year, the duo pocketed two ATP Tour Titles – at the Gerry Weber Open and the If Stockholm Open and made it to the quarter-finals and semi-finals of more than five ATP 1000 Master events. The 2011 US Open semi-finalist duo, ranked No.7 in the world, became the seventh team to join the elite list of top eight teams in the world who will battle it out at the prestigious Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

Ecstatic over making the cut, Bopanna said, “This has been a great year for us, and we are very excited to be playing against the best of the world. All our hard work has paid off and we are glad we met the goal we had set for ourselves earlier this year. This would not have been possible without the help and guidance of Shayamal Vallabhjee, Robert Davies and the rest of our team.” Echoing similar sentiments, Qureshi said, “We had a great 2011 and we thank all our fans for their constant love and support that has helped us reach these heights. We are looking forward to playing against the best in London. Doing well there would be a great way for us to finish an amazing season.”

The 2010 US Open finalists have come a long way this year, from being the reserve team in the battle for London last year to getting a shot at the Title in 2011. Currently in France, the IndoPak Express is looking to conquer the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris, before heading to London.

Stockholm, 23rd October 2011: World No.7 pair of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi were a class above the towering Marcelo Melo and his partner Bruno Soares, who were beaten comprehensively with a 6-1, 6-3 score-line in the final of € 600,000 If Stockholm Open. After a semi-final finish at the US Open earlier this year, Bopanna and Qureshi have won their second title of the season, the first being at the Halle Open.

Big – serving Bopanna and his volley-friendly partner Qureshi got off the blocks effortlessly and found their rhythm early in the match. They dominated their opponents in the first set, breaking their serve at will, while Melo and Soares failed to convert their break point to surrender the first set 6 – 1.

The Brazilians tried to offer more resistance to the IndoPak Express’ onslaught in the second set, but the duo that knocked out the defending champions on route to the finals came up short against the top seeds. The IndoPak Express went on to win the first indoor hardcourt title of their career by pocketing the second set 6 – 3. Crowned the winners of If Stockholm Open, Bopanna and Qureshi have added 250 points to their tally and are very strong contenders to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London, November 2011. Elated with their win, Bopanna said, “It feels great to have won our second title of the year and this is the best way to keep ourselves in contention for a berth in London.”

After tasting success at Stockholm, the IndoPak Express’ next stop is the Valencia Open 500 in Austria where they will be looking to continue their winning ways.

This program is being undertaken by the KNVB not just to train underprivileged children but also to educate local coaches to become better football coaches in accordance with the principles of theWorldCoachesProgramme. This program is an internationally renowned program conducted in many countries across the world. Since the start of the WorldCoaches program in October 2009, more than 2,200 WorldCoaches have been trained and the program has reached more than 66,000 children. Both Ozone Globosport and KNVB will closely work together to use Football as a path to a better future. This program is specially designed to uplift the section of underprivileged children who are between the ages of 7 to 13. The objective is not just to groom world class football players, but to also become good citizens of society.

Mr. Vasudevan, CMD of Ozonegroup, said, “We are extremely excited about our partnership with the Dutch Football Association, KNVB. We hope to promote football among the children of our country, and give them the opportunity to excel through better coaching. This is yet another initiative by Ozone Globosports as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility program.”

First WorldCoaches Course in Bangalore

The KNVB will be conducting a training program to train Indian football coaches. This program will commence in November in Bangalore. The program will train local football coaches on and off the field and coaches who pass the course will be eligible for a UEFA ‘C’ license. These coaches would be given the opportunity to work with the KNVB in training the children. A Dutch coach from the KNVB will be in Bangalore throughout the year to coordinate and execute the trainings. Those keen on this opportunity can write to football@ozonegroup.com

Unique Partnership

Through the WorldCoaches Program the KNVB has been educating coaches in developing countries such as South Africa and Trinidad & Tobago. For KNVB this partnership is the first official partnership with the Corporate World anywhere in the world. This extensive program is part of the Social Responsibility policy of both KNVB and Ozone Globosports.

All for a good cause!

Ace cueist Pankaj Advani to auction his time to raise funds for Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness during the ‘Joy of Giving Week’

Bangalore, 28th September, 2011: World Billiards Champion Pankaj Advani is auctioning his time during the ‘Joy of Giving Week’ to raise funds for Bangalore based NGO – Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA). CMCA is an 11 year old volunteer driven, civil society organization that conducts a national ‘civic club’ program in schools across India. Over the past year CMCA has, through 284 volunteers, reached 19,000 children in 6 cities, 324 schools and 399 civic clubs.

Driven by his desire to contribute to the society, youth icon Pankaj Advani is helping the organisationreach out to a greater number of students. Speaking about his association with the NGO, Pankaj said “For the democratic set-up to function effectively, it is essential for individuals to be aware of their rights, duties and responsibilities. CMCA works towards educating and encouraging the citizens of tomorrow to make a positive impact on the society that they live in.” The NGO believes that he is their perfect goodwill ambassador, as his success inspires the youth of the nation to believe that with hard work and determination nothing is beyond reach. Expressing joy at Pankaj’s efforts to help them, CMCA’s National Coordinator and Managing Trustee Vrunda Bhaskar, said “There is a lot of support for other ills that plague our nation – like poverty, AIDS, academic education and the girl child etc. We are happy that young icons and role models like Pankaj Advani are committing themselves to a very important aspect of India’s future as a secular and democratic nation – preparing our young to be active and empowered citizens who know how to stand up for their rights and strengthen our democracy”

During the ‘Joy of Giving Week’, fans will have a chance to bid to spend time with their idol Pankaj Advani and contribute to a good cause. On the idea behind the ‘Joy of Giving Week’, Pankaj opined, “It is a great initiative and gives people an opportunity to contribute to the causes that are close to their heart and I also think it is a perfect way to pay our respects to the father of our nation.”

The bidding for a chance to spend time with Pankaj will begin on eBay on September 30th and closes on October 20th, 2011 and the highest bidder will win a lunch and bowling session for two with the Billiards icon and all the proceeds from this will go to CMCA.

Strong conviction that children are the most valuable resources of a nation is the driving force behind CMCA’s programmes that endeavour to mould the youth and instill in them values of active citizenship.CMCA’s efforts have helped resolve long pending court cases, put onus on the authorities to keep public places clean, stop indiscriminate felling of trees and encourage several environment friendly practices. Enthused by their approach of attempting to make a difference by reaching out to the future generation directly, Pankaj Advani has pledged his support to Children’s Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA).

Taming the mind: GoSports Foundation scholars exposed to internationally acclaimed sports psychologist

GoSports Foundation partners with renowned sports psychologist Bhishmaraj Purushottam Bam to train 2012 Olympic medal hopefuls and other talented athletes

Bangalore, 20th September, 2011: As talented Indian swimmers Virdhawal Khade, Sandeep Sejwal and Sharath Gayakwad prepare to take on competition from across the world and leave a mark in the London Olympics next year, GoSports Foundation is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the success of their scholars. Understanding the importance of strengthening the mind in order to handle the stress of competition and overcome the pressure of shouldering the weight of a billion expectations, the Foundation arranged special sessions for its promising scholars with renowned sports psychologist Bhishmaraj Purushottam Bam.

Mr. Bam, who trained the Indian shooting team to tremendous success in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, is in the city to help the scholars of GoSports Foundation harness their mental strength. In his first session with the athletes, he spoke at length about psychological preparation and elaborated on the various techniques explained in his book ‘Winning Habits’ to help the mind stay focussed. Laying emphasis on mental preparation in order to succeed in the highly competitive international sporting scene, he explained “In any sport, 90% of the battle is mental and 10% depends on the physical aspects and dealing with pressure is essential for success. Coaches in India tend to pick on the negatives, but it is important to look for positives and focus on those.” Talking about the swimmers who he has been working with over the last two days, he said, “These athletes have not received any formal mental fitness training previously, but have learnt to cope well with pressure and they seem to be naturally mentally tough.”

Speaking about GoSports Foundation’s initiative in partnering with Mr. Bam to strengthen their preparation for London 2012, Arjuna awardee Virdhawal Khade averred, “Arranging sessions for us with Mr. Bam is a great sign and shows the Foundation’s commitment to the success of its athletes. Not many sportspeople in India have access to sports psychologists, especially of the caliber of Mr. Bam who has worked with top sports people from across the country. I am very confident that his experience and knowledge will be of great help to us”. Expressing his views on these sessions, India’s fastest breaststroke swimmer Sandeep Sejwal, opined “Our initial sessions with Mr. Bam were really good and we have established a comfortable rapport with him and I am looking forward to making the most our future sessions.”

Sharath Gayakwad, one of the best para-swimmers that India has ever produced, learnt early on in life to put mind over matters and overcome physical constraints to become a world class swimmer. Regarding the importance of training the mind in order to surmount adversities and succeed in sport and in life, he believes that it is essential to shut out negative thoughts, especially during events. “We should not stress over what happened in the past but focus on the present instead. Mr.Bam has taught the importance of keeping the mind blank while competing and not worry about strokes, techniques or how fast I swim”.

Strengthening the mind is essential for success and GoSports Foundation is helping the city’s athletes imbibe mental toughness by providing a platform for them to interact with one of the country’s best sports psychologists. Apart from its Swimming and Badminton scholars, GoSports Foundation is ensuring that other young athletes from the city also benefit from Mr.Bam’s expertise. The Foundation arranged an open session for city’s upcoming athletes with the experienced sports psychologist who has mentored some of India’s greatest athletes in a career that has spanned over three decades.

Elaborating on GoSports Foundation’s vision for Indian sportspersons, trustee Nandan Kamath said, “GoSports Foundation is very happy to have been able to facilitate sessions for our swimmers with veteran sports psychologist Mr. Bam. We hope that these interactions help the swimmers with their mental preparedness as they train towards the London Olympics next year.” The Foundation is doing its best to enable Indian athletes to train and compete at the highest levels without worrying about financial constraints, helping them realise their potential and leave their mark at the international level.

Bangalore, 29th August 2011: India’s leading para-swimmer Prasanta Karmakar and Asian Games 2010 Bronze medalist Virdhawal Khade received the prestigious Arjuna Award from President Prathiba Patil at the Rashtrapati Bhawan today, in the midst of family and fellow sportspersons. GoSports Foundation scholars were feted by the Government of India in recognition of their contribution to the sport of swimming at the 2010 Asian and Commonwealth Games.

Para Asian Games medalist, Prasanta Karmakar believes, “GoSports Foundation has played a very important role in what I am today. They recognized my talent, had faith in my abilities and acted as a constant source of support. Apart from financial assistance, they played a crucial role in planning my competitions and training schedule. The very thought that they back me, gives me a lot of confidence.” Ranked top 20 in the world in each of his competitive categories, Prasanta is India’s first swimmer to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games 2010.

For Virdhawal, Commonwealth Games 2010 finalist and the first Indian swimmer to win a medal at the Asian Games in 24 years, the Arjuna Award is nothing short of a confidence booster as he prepares for the 2012 London Olympics. Speaking about the Foundation’s contribution to his success, Virdhawal says, “There are several aspects of a sports person’s career where the parents and the coaches can provide only limited support. That’s why, I am thankful to GoSports Foundation and Coach Nihar Ameen for being my support system throughout my swimming career. The two of us being honored is proof of GoSports Foundation’s commitment to sporting excellence.”

Olympian swimming coach and member of GoSports Foundation Panel of Experts, Nihar Ameen’s joy knew no bounds. Expressing pride at the boys’ win, he said, “I’m really thrilled about the success of my wards and believe this is a huge step towards motivating them. It’s important that sportsmen are recognized for their achievements. With this honor, there’s no doubt that Indian swimming has a great future. I would like to acknowledge the support of GoSports Foundation towards Virdhawal and Prasanta’s successful journey. It’s important that athletes have a strong support system and GoSports Foundation has ensured that for them.”

The prestigious Arjuna Awards are the latest addition to the list of accomplishments by GoSports Foundation scholars and a testament to the Foundation’s commitment towards supporting athletes as they work tirelessly towards achieving sporting excellence.

Five-year deal as official technology partner and title sponsor. Leading European marathon with 33,000 participants, will be renamed as “TCS Amsterdam Marathon”

Continued focus on global sports sponsorships to promote wellness and community development

Amsterdam | Mumbai, August 26, 2011: Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), (BSE: 523540, NSE: TCS), a leading IT services, consulting and business solutions firm, was today appointed as the official technology partner to the Amsterdam Marathon and has taken up the title sponsorship of the event for the five-year period 2011-2015.

Conceived in 1975, this event is one of Europe’s leading marathons and is expected to have 33.000 participants from 80 countries at the 36th edition, which will take place on October 16, 2011. It is renowned for being one of the flattest and fastest marathon courses worldwide.

“The city of Amsterdam is proud that a prestigious international company like Tata Consultancy Services has chosen to sponsor this marathon. This sponsorship will further strengthen the relationship between the city and TCS; therefore, we look forward to the new TCS Amsterdam Marathon,” said Eberhard van der Laan, Mayor of the city of Amsterdam.

“The TCS Amsterdam Marathon (as it will now be known) has grown from being an intimate event in earlier years to a global one, which is now a must on the itinerary of most serious runners. We are pleased to have Tata Consultancy Services as our strategic partner as we look to expand the event and also deepen our use of technology,” said Simone Richardson, Director of Stichting Sportevenementen Le Champion, the entity that organizes the event.

This announcement marks another step in TCS’ strategy to engage with global sports sponsorships in order to promote wellness and community development through sports. TCS’ significant portfolio of sports partnerships includes tie-ups with Formula 1 racing team Ferrari, pro-cycling team Garmin-Cervélo and several marathons in major cities in the world including Bangalore, Boston, Chicago, Mumbai and New York. In addition to the title sponsorship, TCS will support the marathon by providing technology services and has set up a special purpose team to look at enhancing the performance and experience of the sport.

“Given our significant and growing presence in major markets such as the US, UK and Europe, we always look at ways to engage with and give back to the communities we work in. An inclusive sport such as running, which has no entry barriers and can be taken up anyone, provides tremendous opportunity to widely engage the local community and promote wellness. The Netherlands has always been a key center of operations for us and we are pleased to support the Amsterdam Marathon as part of our larger commitment to the community,” said Surya Kant, President of TCS North America, UK & Europe.

TCS has been operating in the Netherlands since 1992 and the unit is currently one of its largest country operations worldwide. The company operates a head office in Amsterdam, a global delivery center in Eindhoven and has over 2000 experts catering to leading companies such as KLM, ABN AMRO, Rabobank and the ING Group. It was recognized in 2010 as a Top Employer in the Netherlands by the CRF institute and collaborates significantly with several chambers of commerce, academic institutes and charity organizations on a variety of community initiatives in the country.

Shoaib Akhtar ‘uncut’ for his fans and cricket lovers

One of the most talented and certainly one of the most colourful players in the history of cricket, Shoaib Akhtar holds the record for the fastest delivery ever, clocking in at 100.3 mph. Having taken more than 400 wickets over an eighteen-year career, Shoaib has seen it all—the best matches, the most exciting tournaments, the highs and lows of personal achievement and failure.

This is his take on the game, on his peers, on the unending tussles between bowlers and batsmen, and of course, the institutions that control the sport, including the Pakistan Cricket Board

From the early days of struggle to the 2011 World Cup, this is Shoiab’s story in his own words, straight from the heart.
