Mumbai, 7 February 2012; The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI) has placed orders for 6 Nos. Anchor Handling, Towing and Supply (AHTS) vessels with M/s ABG Shipyard Ltd. today, on 31st January, 2012. SCI is committed to development of the shipbuilding industry in India and has selected ABG Shipyard, one of the premier shipyards in the Country, for building these vessels. The shipyard was selected through competitive tendering process which was limited only for Indian shipyards. The vessels would be delivered in a phased manner from 2013 to 2014.

The vessels ordered by SCI are of 80 tonne bollard pull capacity each with superior specifications. These vessels will be able to offer the essential support and services for growth of the Indian Offshore industry.
In the offshore sector, SCI presently has a fleet of 12 vessels of which 9 vessels were acquired during the mid eighties. These vessels have been serving the oil exploration and production sector in India and the older vessels were upgraded by SCI with dynamic positioning systems, enabling the vessels to offer superior service to the oil industry. The present order of 6 vessels would serve as part replacement of these ageing assets after their phase out from the service. In addition to these 12 owned vessels SCI has on order 2 AHTS vessels of 80T capacity each, 3 AHTS of 120T capacity each and 2 PSVs. SCI has also been operating offshore vessels owned by ONGC, some of which are specialized vessels requiring high technical expertise for management. SCI has built up such required expertise through rigorous training of dedicated teams over the years. The present order for 6 nos. 80T capacity vessels mark SCI’s further interest in the offshore segment, which is growing at a rapid pace in the international as well as Indian context.

With the present order SCI’s order book position improves to 29 vessels, which include VLCCs, cellular containers vessels, bulk carriers and offshore vessels.

Backed by a good order book, the Dredging Division is doing well and to meet the increased capacity requirement, Mercator has recently added a Cutter Suction Dredger and a TSH Dredger.

The oversupply in tonnage in all the segments continued to affect the operations of the Shipping Division and the earnings were further impacted as the bunker rate of heavy fuel oil increased.

Appeal to Shipping lines and feeder operators to withdraw the congestion surcharges (CTR) immediately

By Chozha Naachiar, President – Tamil Chamber of commerce & Chairman Consultative Committee of City Chambers of Commerce.

***********

It is unfair the Shipping lines and feeder operators charging congesstion surcharge in the name of Chennai Trade Recovery ( CTR) charges on Export & import containers. Mearly issueing notice to trade does not empower them to collect such charges, which is legally not valid.

Since all the stake holders are putting their effors jointly in solving the issues, and the situation at the port is improved, the liners and the feeder operators without authority in the absence of any regularatory body to control this kind of practiceses levying the trade with huge amounts which affects the entire trade.

So, the Tamil chamber of commerce appeal to the Shipping Lines and the Feeder operators to immediately withdraw the congesstion surcharges (CTR). In the interest of EXIM Trade.

The Tamil Chamber also request the Chennai Port Trust to give priority berthing only to those shipping lines and operators who are not charging Congestion Surcharge. The chamber will also take this matter to the shipping ministry to establish the regularatory body to curb this kind of practices and control in the future.

SCI had signed contracts for acquisition of two Supramax bulk carriers on resale basis which were originally contracted by M/s Grand Yard Investment Pvt. Ltd., China and were under construction at M/s Guoyu Shipyard, China. SCI had signed contracts for these two resale vessels during April 2011. The second vessel is scheduled to be delivered to SCI by July end.

The vessel has a gross tonnage of 33,032 tonnes and deadweight of 56,638 tonnes. The vessel has been classed with BV and IRS and has been built to comply with the latest and most stringent international regulations. This will be the first vessel in SCI fleet to be equipped with camless electronic Main Engine.

India has been on a fast track growth trajectory and industrial and infrastructural development plays a major role to sustain this growth. Strengthening its bulk carrier fleet would definitely help SCI contribute to this growth as well as increase its presence in the bulk carrier segment. The prevailing downturn in the shipbuilding market is throwing up opportunities for acquiring tonnage at attractive prices and SCI is geared to take advantage of such opportunities.

With addition of this vessel, SCI’s fleet strength has increased to 79 vessels. Acquisition of the vessel is in line with SCI’s strategy of maintaining a modern and young fleet of vessels. The Company has 30 vessels on order at present and 12 of these are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2011.

(SCI) has signed contracts for acquisition of two resale Supramax bulk carriers with M/s Grand Yard. Investments Ltd., China on 15th April, 2011. These vessels have been acquired through a competitive global tendering process and SCI has selected the vessels of M/s Grand Yard Investments based on the technical suitability and commercial competitiveness.

These vessels are presently under construction at M/s Guoyu Shipyard, China which is under the same group of M/s Grand Yard Investments Ltd. The vessels are at an advanced stage of construction and would be delivered to SCI within 4 months and 5 months of contract effectiveness respectively.

SCI presently has 17 bulk carriers in its fleet out of which some of the Handymax bulk carriers would be due for phasing out shortly. The vessels contracted now would enable SCI to partly replace some of these Handymax bulk carriers which have completed their economic life. SCI also has another 6 Handymax bulk carriers on order with STX Shipyard, China which will join the SCI fleet during the year 2011-12.

The major economies of the world are on a revival path after the global slowdown. The fundamentals of Asian economies continue to be strong and outlook for dry bulk trade remains positive. SCI would be able to cater to this growing trade with the new vessels upon delivery. SCI also has further plans to augment its bulk carrier fleet by acquiring Panamax and Capesize bulk carriers in the near future.

SCI has embarked upon a major fleet acquisition plan and presently has 31 vessels of 20.22 million DWT on order. This includes all types of vessels, i.e. crude oil carriers (VLCCs), dry bulk carriers, cellular container vessels and offshore supply vessels. Total investment for these projects would be over US $ 1.39 billion (about Rs. 6,200 Crores).

“The Ministry of Shipping is working on a new policy to promote coastal shipping and also in the process of formulating a package for promoting Indian ship building industry” said Mr. G K Vasan, Hon’ble Union Minister for Shipping, Government of India while delivering his inaugural address at the “Ports and Maritime Investment & Business Conclave” organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here today.

Mr Vasan said that the Maritime Agenda released by the Ministry recently, which is a vision document for the next 10 years has set some important goals like increasing port capacity to around 3200 million tonnes – which will require an investment of about Rs. 3 lakh crore; to enhance the Indian tonnage four fold to 43 million GT by 2020, improve India’s share in global shipbuilding to 5% and increase the share of Indian sea farers to at least 10 %.

In the last two years, nearly 22 public private partnership projects have been awarded at a total investment of about Rs. 9077 crores. To facilitate private sector investment, we have put in place a favourable and investor friendly policy framework, which includes a 100 % FDI in shipping and port sector, said Mr Vasan.

Mr Vasan said that the Government is proposing to develop Colachel Port which has a deep draft and is strategically located close to the International maritime routes.

Mr. Das said that to enhance the commercial development of ports in India private sector investment has to come in bulk. Indian tonnage needs to be stronger than the present value. Also the present comparison of tonnage handing of major Vs minor ports which is 2:1 has to become 1:1 by 2020, which is the target set by the Shipping Ministry, he added.

Mr. B K Chaturvedi, Member, Planning Commission, Government of India in his address said that according to the 11th year plan the achievement in the port and maritime sector is good. India is exporting hugely to other countries and ports are solely responsible for that. The Government of India should give more importance to ports in enhancing and developing ports and shipping sectors.

The stakeholder’s perspective was given by Mr. Rajiv Agarwal, CEO & MD, Essar Shipping, Port & Logistics Ltd. Mr Agarwal said that foreign trade is growing tremendously and the investments in port sector are increasing. This vessel has been a risk to the International shipping for many months and has carried out several attacks.

Seeing the aircraft, the skiffs immediately aborted their piracy attempt and dashed towards the mother vessel Prantalay which hurriedly hoisted the two skiffs onboard and set a Westerly course to escape from the area. This action cleared all doubts of Prantalay being used by pirates as a mother vessel. Whilst CG and IN Dorniers continuously tracked Prantalay, Indian Naval Ship Cankarso (a recently commissioned Water Jet Fast Attack Craft) which was already deployed in the area for anti piracy patrol was directed to intercept and investigate Prantalay.

MUMBAI, India, 19th January, 2011 – The shipbuilding and repair market in India is poised to pick up momentum with the increasing penetration of Indian shipbuilding companies in the offshore vessels (OSVs) segment. Indian companies have established strong credentials in the building and repair of OSV, resulting in a spike in orders for such vessels from the Indian industry. The limited capacities related to OSVs in leading shipbuilding nations such as Japan and South Korea are resulting in diversion of orders to India, driving up the fortunes of the Indian shipbuilding and repair market.

Growth in multimodal transportation infrastructure and integrated logistics parks leads to significant logistic outsourcing opportunities. The aging fleet of shipping companies in India is another factor energizing prospects for the shipbuilding and repair market in the country.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.automotive.frost.com), Strategic Analysis of Shipbuilding and Repair Market in India, finds that the market earned revenues of $1.60 billion in 2010 and expects this to reach $3.50 billion in 2016.

“About 40 percent of the India-owned fleet is more than 20 years old, and Indian owners will need to spend about $4 billion to replace these during 2010-2015,” says Frost & Sullivan Transportation & Logistics Program Manager Srinath Manda. “In addition, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has mandated the phasing out of all single-hull vessels by 2010, and single hull tankers constitute about 15.8 percent of the total vessels owned by Indian shipping companies.”

The future of the Indian shipbuilding and repair market looks promising and is likely to double in size in the next five to six years. The growth potential is further enhanced with the Indian Government aiming for the nation’s shipbuilding sector to attain a 5 percent share in the global market by 2017.

Although the outlook for the market is bright, there are some challenges clouding its landscape. “India has a vast coastline, but there is an acute shortage of deep draft water space along the coast,” says Srinath. “This restricts the type and size of ships that can be built or repaired in India, thereby severely curbing the full growth potential of the Indian shipbuilding and repair market.”

Shipbuilding and ship repair are both labor-intensive activities and fulfilling the requirements of this industry is proving to be a market bottleneck.

The Indian Government is encouraging greater private participation in the sector and a new world-class commercial shipyard is being built on the eastern coast. These factors will rev up growth prospects for the market. The Government is also facilitating improvements in port and infrastructure facilities and easing regulations and taxes to assist the industry in addressing the challenges and overcoming its barriers. Participants in this space are striving to gain a foothold in the small and special category vehicles segment, such as offshore vessels to optimize business traction.

He outlined the opportunities for foreign investors in India’s USD 20.8 billion port upgradation and modernisation programme involving 276 ports, many of which are Public-Private Partnership projects in various stages of implementation or bidding.

Minister Vasan was speaking at a seminar on the Ports and Maritime Industry of India organized by the Indian High Commission and CII today.

Similarly, India is also surging ahead in shipping and ship-building, the Minister said. India is currently ranked 16th among the maritime countries in terms of the size of its merchant shipping fleet and tonnage has grown from 6.94 million GT in 2004 to cross the 10 million GT mark last month for the first time. Shipbuilding has high growth potential owing to certain inherent strengths, especially low labour cost, strong domestic demand, well-established steel and manufacturing industry and availability of technically qualified manpower, and an investment of USD 4 billion is envisaged in Indian shipyards in the near future.

Apart from investments, India also looks to Singapore for expertise, given Singapore’s impressive and world-class port and maritime industry, the Minister added. Many Singaporean companies have already invested in India’s ports, maritime and logistics sector and also entered into joint ventures with Indian companies, but given the expected healthy growth of the Indian economy, there is tremendous potential for Singaporean companies. Minister Vasan outlined some of the key investor friendly policy initiatives taken by the Ministry and assured the Government of India’s complete support to Singaporean companies investing in the sector.

The seminar featured session on Ports and Shipping sectors, and was attended by around 200 representatives of industry from Singapore. Well known ports and shipping companies from India including Mundra Port, Bharati Shipyard, Jindal Saw, Pipavav Shipyard, Essar Shipping, IL&FS, Shipping Corporation and Chairmen of ports of Chennai, Cochin, Kandla, Kakinada and Mumbai were part of the delegation that travelled to Singapore from India.

Indian Logistic Industry report giving the challenges and growth of Indian Logistics Industry has been added by Bharatbook

Mumbai, September 9, 2010, /IndiaPRLine.com/India is an integral part of the global village and its reach has augmented exponentially over the last few years, with Indian companies setting up bases abroad and multinational firms entrenching themselves in India. In view of the huge diversity in Indian topography and with business transcending geographies, the supply chain network – the backbone of growth, has become multi-modal and infrastructure dependent. ( http://www.bharatbook.com/detail.asp?id=149775&rt=Indian-Logistic-Industry.html )

Indian Logistic Industry

A well-developed and networked logistics industry is imperative for the success and overall growth of the economy. An efficient supply chain management provides a competitive edge to industry players. Logistics has always been perceived as a cost centre and across industries efforts are made to manage cost rather than use it to enhance customer satisfaction and improve revenue growth. It believes that logistics should be viewed as a strategic tool, which can lead to efficient business operations resulting in higher revenues and better profitability.

It has estimated the overall Indian logistics spend at Rs 2.7 trillion in 2008-09, which includes only primary transport modes and infrastructure, equivalent to around 8.2 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). And if the secondary movement (from the hub to the various depots) is also included, this shoots up to 10.7 per cent, which is significantly higher than those of developed nations where it averages 5-7 per cent. Higher logistics spend as percentage of GDP can be attributed to the overall inefficiency in logistics operations, multiple tax structures, inadequate infrastructure and unorganised nature of the industry in India.

India, May 3, 2010: Chennaimoms launches Intro to social shopping, Shopping is one activity which women from every walk of life are excited about. Women like discussing about shopping, planning for shopping, the shopping experience itself and sharing their experience of shopping. More than men, women plan a lot about what they want to buy, where to buy and what will be the best price for that. It is not uncommon for women to go shopping as a group. The benefits include better ideas and suggestions and fun.

With more options available for the buyers, businesses are aggressively reaching out to large group of buyers like marketing to apartment associations, club members etc This increases the benefit of buying as a group which includes better pricing and good service.

Identifying the benefit of group buying, www.chennaimoms.com has launched www.masthideals.com , its social shopping platform. MasthiDeals.com is a website which provides one deeply discounted deal from reputed businesses including restaurants, spa, beauty saloons, Adventure sports clubs, Dance studios etc.

MasthiDeals negotiates a great discount (many times more than 50% of the listed price) from businesses by assuring bulk sales. The vast audience of MasthiDeals ensures that the many people buy this offer thereby benefitting the buyer.

Ms Bhavani Raman, founder of www.masthideals.com says, “When more people join together, they use one another’s experience and knowledge in deciding the right product, the right place to buy and the best price to pay. For anybody, a discount of more than 50% from a good restaurant or beauty parlour is very appealing. For the businesses too, to work out a deep discount and reach high volume of users is very effective when compared to print media, radio or TV Ad”

Kumar, business owner says “For businesses like us who are small scale specialty products, TV or print media ads are very costly. Also there is no surety of returns. Whereas MasthiDeals does not charge any fixed fees but only a portion of the extra sales it makes. This exactly suits our business requirements.”

A mom says “We always find the best bargain when we are in high numbers. Now that MasthiDeals acts as the medium to generate bigger crowd, I am not surprised by the huge discounts given by businesses. The huge discounts encourages us to try out different restaurants, spas etc for the first time. If we like the service and product we will keep going there”

Speaking about the safety of credit card payment on the website, Bhavani Raman assures that the website has used latest technology – anti hacking mechanism to ensure that it is 100% safe to pay using credit card, debit card, online transfer.

MathiDeals.com has a great growth potential as both the buyers and the businesses are happy about the concept and implementation. We wish them good luck.
