Tiger Global has invested $6 million in online Indian jewellery portal, CaratLane, in its second e-commerce investment this month. Earlier this month, the global PE major had invested $20 million in books-to electronics e-retail venture, Flipkart. CaratLane, which supplies to 50 cities, will use the funding to expand its national footprint.

“We want to strengthen our back end and invest in marketing and brand building,” said the company’s CEO Mithun Sacheti, who founded the venture in 2008 with Srinivasa Gopalan, founder-CEO of Lister Technologies. Tiger Global is betting big on Indian e-commerce.

In April, Tiger Global, along with IDG Ventures and Indo-US Venture Partners, invested $14 million in e-retailer Myntra. They also invested in online electronics retailer Lets-Buy and in online babycare products retailer BabyOye.com.

E-commerce in India has been booming, with the market expected to rise 47% to Rs 46,000 crore this year, according to a report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). However, e-retail constitutes just 8% of e-commerce, with personal items like jewellery, apparels, cosmetics, shoes and watches contributing 19% to e-retail.

While online retail has been popularly considered as driven by deals and low prices, CaratLane claims the average ticket size on their site is Rs 80,000.

But the company also claims its prices are upto 25% lower than retail store prices. Sacheti, a trained gemologist, said that in any nascent e-commerce market, low prices are the first step to attract customers. His family owns Jaipur Gems and Sacheti and he was able to leverage the connections and expertise in the area of gems and jewellery to build up CaratLane.

“We are able to keep prices low as we hold minimum stocks and are able to turn around pieces in 48 hours,” said Sacheti. While the company manufactures and retails jewellery, it acts as an aggregator for solitaires. “We source solitaires from all over the world and are able to guarantee the lowest prices,” he said. The company, which clocked revenue of Rs 50 crore in FY 2010-11, expects to expand to 100 cities by end of the year.

Notes to Editor
CaratLane.com is India’s first and the largest online diamond destination, which give one access to over 100,000 diamonds and over 2000 jewellery designs at price upto 25 % lower rates than traditional retail stores. CaratLane also offers Free shipping on every order within India.

More than 200,000 Indians Speak Out for the Right to Education

New Delhi, January 13, 2010 – The first-ever digital awareness campaign, “Awaaz Do”, launched to raise awareness on the Right to Education (RTE), has generated an over-whelming response with more than 200,000 people joining the campaign in less than three months.

Prominent supporters include the Minister for Human Resource Development, Kapil Sibal, and Bollywood superstar and UNICEF National Ambassador, Priyanka Chopra, who have signed up for the campaign through its website www.awaazdo.in to support the eight million children who are currently out-of-school.

“Every child in India is entitled to equitable and quality education. The RTE provides for that. The “Awaaz Do” campaign will help ensure it. If we want free, quality education for the eight million children who are out-of-school, let us be part of the “Awaaz Do” Champions campaign. I am part of it. You should be part of it.” said Kapil Sibal, in his video clip supporting the campaign http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GxxtkYk6Q0.

India is home to a growing young, urban population that are mobilising to demand the goals set forth in the Right to Education Act, 2009 (RTE). The Act guarantees free and compulsory education for every Indian child, in the age group of six to fourteen years, regardless of caste, religion or background.

The media also has a significant role to play by keeping RTE firmly in the national spotlight. Using new technology and social networking, the campaign allows citizens to get actively involved and demand the right for children who are excluded and marginalised. As part of getting all children into school, the campaign encourages people to know more about RTE and also to take action in their communities by supporting schools in its implementation of the Act.

“We must continue to build the momentum that has been achieved in a short span of time and keep the public discourse focused on RTE, said Urmila Sarkar, UNICEF’s Chief of Education.” “The campaign has successfully forged partnerships among media, government, civil and corporate organizations and, most importantly, with citizens who demand that all children get the quality education they are entitled to and deserve.”

The campaign will reach its peak on 25 January with a symbolic presentation of all of the “Awaaz Do” Champions at an event hosted in Delhi with Kapil Sibal, Minister for Human Resource Development, Karin Hulshof, UNICEF India Representative, and school children.

After Rajya Sabha member and former telecom entrepreneur Rajeev Chandrasekhar wrote an open letter to Ratan Tata and claimed that the Tata group benefited most from the government’s dual technology policy, Ratan Tata has hit back by writing an open letter to Rajeev Chandrasekhar

In this open letter, the Tata group chairman gives a point by point rebuttal on the various allegations. Tata says that TTSL was the only operator that returned spectrum when demanded by DoT, while other powerful GSM operators continued to hoard spectrum beyond their entitlement.

Tata claims that as an existing licensee, TTSL applied for spectrum under the dual technology policy after the policy was announced on October 19 2007. He alleged that TTSL is still awaiting allotment of spectrum in Delhi and 39 key districts for about three years whereas operators – who applied and paid the fee even before the policy allotment – were not only considered but were also allotted spectrum with amazing alacrity in January 2008 itself. Tata questions Chandrasekhar on how could this be advantageous to TTSL.

After years of working in the corporate world, I came to realize that people’s insecurities and fears often drive their behavior and cause all sorts of unforeseen and in many cases, unfortunate consequences. As someone who had being married and divorced twice myself, and fully understood the personal price you pay when relationships go wrong, I became increasingly fascinated about personal relationships and why they fail.

On how this book Be the One is different from others?

There have never been so many single people or individuals in relationships that are not working as well as they might. Divorce rates are higher than they’ve ever been. Yet millions of young and older people want true intimacy and long-lasting, stable and loving relationships. Men want this too. But all too often they have NO idea how to express themselves.

In many cases the expectations of men and women are not being met. They may have long lists of ‘requirements’ from their existing partner, or for ‘The One’ they would want to marry. However, in so many cases, people simply don’t think too much about what THEY contribute to a relationship – it’s all about what they GET from a relationship. This isn’t helped by the media’s portrayal of relationships and love. You’d think that with so much talk about ‘love’, we’d all have a clear idea about what love is. Millions of people are confused!

AND on top of that so many so called relationship and dating books make recommendations that, quite frankly, you would only inflict on people you really DIDN’T like!!! And in the process, guaranteeing that YOU become an unappealing person! Not a good start for any meaningful relationship.

AND there have never been easier ways to FIND a potential partner via dating websites. But no one seems to tell you how to keep one (without being manipulative and dishonest!) or be someone that another would want to keep.

“How to be The One” is therefore different. It focuses entirely on how to become someone who is worth keeping. In the process, you become a ‘better’ person for yourself too.

I specialize in bringing people together – its my passion. I get an enormous sense of satisfaction helping people to get on better. Part of being able to do that, is developing a better relationship with yourself. I want “How to Be The One” to do that. Once this happens you will become a more appealing person to others.

Mumbai: Esprit in association with and magazine, today announced the launch of their Spring Summer ’10 collection with actor Chitrangada Singh at the Esprit store in Bandra, Mumbai, over a wine and cheese soiree.

Looking stylish and chic as ever, Chitrangada who dons the March cover in Esprit SS10 collection of and magazine, unveiled the magazine’s latest issue.

Ushering the new season in inimitable style and panache, Chitrangada unveiled the Esprit SS10 collection which is high on fashion, full of colour and all things fine.

The evening began with a fashion show with models showcasing the SS10 collection by Esprit.

Glamour and sophistication dominate the three ranges by Esprit this season: the Casual wear for men and women, the EDC range and the special line offering a wide range for men and women which promises to dress you effortlessly for every occasion from boardroom to beach, from party to weekend getaway in style.

Esprit Women Casual makes a spring statement with oversized sweats, parkas or extra long blazers with slim leggings revealing a look of pure comfort that puts inspiration from distant lands into an urban-athletic context. The line gets a feminine statement with gypsy or tunic-style dresses as well as a revival of the skirt. Cropped pants, chinos and boyfriend jeans are absolute summer must-haves with feel-good appeal. Clear, rich colour combinations such as juicy orange, bright pink or tomato red with grass green help to beat the heat this summer.

Esprit Women collection got the theme inspired by global travelling; the 2010 Spring/Summer range is both contemporary and versatile, ranging from architecturally defined shapes to luxurious summer party looks. Experiments with feminine and masculine elements redefine business wear with elegant single-breasted blazers, trench coats, feminine blouses, and safari-themed jackets which give the line a cool sense of confidence for breezing through the summer heat. Colour for the season flows as smoky pastels, warm bicolours, tinted grays, and bright coral red make a fashion statement.

‘Style’ is the word for Esprit EDC this summer. It presents a cool culture clash for the season. The basic elements of the look include ethnic styles, Wild West accents, beach culture, and bohemian looks. Oversized soft jersey T-shirts, bandeaus, and leggings are this summer’s must-haves.

New denims take on the leading role for summer 2010 with slim silhouettes in bright, extra-light washings and vintage destroyed effects for that worn-in look. This summer may mean crisp whites – but innocent? When washed berry tones are paired together with light yellow and green nuances, not a chance!

Esprit Men Casual presents a season filled with adventure and cool outfits. ‘Relax in Style’ stands for looks that fit in where summer’s at its best when casual field jackets, innovative blouson shapes and denim jackets ensure a look that’s both athletic and smart, and serve as the perfect companions for the next open-air gig at the park. Used washings give round-the-clock basics such as Bermuda shorts and T-shirts an authentic, worn look. The colour scale plays with the latest green tones complemented by new shades of purple along with summer darks, brown and beige.

Esprit Men Collection presents an urban crossover look for the 2010 Spring/Summer season. Summery globetrotter touches give even business styles a relaxed look which includes blazers with fine stripes or cardigans. A contemporary take on the cruise ship theme makes for a fresh start in the summer with striped knit sweaters and smart single-breasted blazers. Madras checks and bright colours such as orange, purple, aqua and peppermint awaken vacation dreams. Men collection includes sea tones and coral red pair with smoky olive, beige and gray mélanges to add to the style quotient.

The theme for Esprit Men EDC is “Urban Road Trip”. A relaxed street style kicks off the season with items such as hoodies and athletic looks straight from the neighbourhood basketball court. Esprit Men EDC offers Bermuda shorts, shirts, and short-sleeved shirts in lightweight fabrics and light colours with added vintage finish. Shades of berry, yellow, green and blue make the range a guaranteed summertime hit.

So, make a cool style statement with the fun and flirty Esprit SS10 range.

The Esprit SS10 collection starts from Rs590 onwards.

Debt-GDP ratio 76.6 per cent in 2009/10 (70.6 per cent in 2000-01).

Large revenue and fiscal deficits of past two years unsustainable.

Possible reduction of fiscal deficit of centre by 1.0-1.5 per cent in 2010/11.

Feasible to reduce expenditure-GDP ratio by 1 per cent.

Expand service tax coverage. Unify the rate structure of CENVAT and service tax and peg it between the current and the previous higher level.

Some Policy Options – management of prices, focus on agriculture and power:o cool down food inflation:

Timely release of foodgrain in sufficient quantity below prevailing market prices:

1.Advance planning for timely imports at early signals of shortfall in production.

2.Develop a distribution channel to supplement the PDS.

Two major constraints to growth in the medium and long term – agriculture and power:

1.Technology and organizational factors major constraints to sustainable agricultural growth. Improve agricultural research by stepping up fund allocation, revamping content and extension systems.

2.Two constraints to capacity augmentation in power – shortage of domestic manufacturing capacity of power plant equipment and administrative issues like land acquisition and environmental clearances. (ANI)

Magazine Mall to Aggregate Leading Publications for Indian Readers
www.magazinemall.in Launches Aggregation Platform with over 150 Premium Publications

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Thursday, February 11, 2010 / IndiaPRLine / — Global Interactive Malls has launched its first e-commerce portal www.magazinemall.in to provide the dual benefit of flexibility of online magazine shopping and the reading pleasure of print publications. This is the first of its kind in India based on the products/services offered, the target demographics, the reach strategy, the portal design and functionality, with a full cycle delivery fulfillment model.

Said Sandeep Kumar, Founder and CEO, “Magazine Mall is an “aggregation platform for readers” which provides a ‘One-stop’ subscription management solution across interests, age groups and publication categories.” The solution entails an e and m- commerce platform targeting urban middle class Indians, aged 18-65 years.

While existing sales channels i.e. newsstands and book stores are severely challenged for space, making the entry of new and upcoming publishers much more expensive and difficult, intra-city parking and commute is making the news stand browsing behavior a thing of the past.

Says Jay Vikram Bakshi, mentor and evangelist, “We will encourage publishers to take advantage of the new ‘e-bricks’ distribution model that will aggregate various titles from different publishers, and ‘ship box’ a choice of publications ordered by an individual, family, institution or customized for a Corporate.”

Magazinemall.in has entered into agreements with more than 16 leading publishing groups covering over 150 leading publication titles and is in active discussion with more. The company has also tied up with various industry leaders as eco-system partners viz. Overnite Express, one of India’s largest delivery companies, for logistics and delivery, the site is powered by Pugmarks, India’s top portal developer and by CC Avenues, India’s largest third party payment gateway. The online customer acquisition and loyalty management is partnered with iMint, India’s largest online rewards company.

The first warehouse and logistics hub of Magazinemall.in is located at Gurgaon, a New Delhi suburb, 20 minutes from the New Delhi airport.

Forbes India, the country’s most influential business magazine, has announced its first “Forbes India Person of the Year.”

Kolkata, West Bengal, December 22, 2009 / IndiaPRLine / — Forbes India, the country’s most influential business magazine, has announced its first “Forbes India Person of the Year.”

In the issue which hit the stands on the 19th December, the magazine features a special package of stories about the lives and work of 21 fabulously talented, vastly influential people and their credentials for being Person of the Year. To name just three: Karambir Kang, the General Manager of Taj Mahal Hotel who stood up and delivered even at the worst moment in his life; Jean Dreze, a development economist who has shown us how economic policy can be an instrument of deep social transformation and Rahul Bhatia, who’s built India’s most profitable low-cost airline.

Finally, there could be only one winner. And the team chose Rahul Gandhi.

As Indrajit Gupta, Editor, Forbes India, says, “In making our choice, we fully realise that we’re gambling partly on hope. But then, we reckon Rahul Gandhi represents the best chance India has to clean up the cesspool that politics and governance have become.” Views echoes by Dinesh Narayanan, the author of the profile of Gandhi, and guest columnist Rajdeep Sardesai, Editor-in-Chief, IBN18 Network.

Why a ‘person of the year?’ The purpose of the exercise isn’t to put an individual – or even a set of individuals – on a pedestal. Yes, their achievements and their contributions to our lives must be recognised. But the main goal here is to find something else. After 2007′s hype, 2009′s collapse and the year of sober introspection that was 2009, 2010 will be an inflection point in India’s history. It is a time in which we must find a new way of doing things. One that’s not borrowed from the West, not learned from management tomes; one that is rooted in our own culture, history and unique circumstances. Our way. An Indian Way. And through the profiles of these 21 remarkable people, we can find that way.

The year-end special issue also features a series of lists that will open up a world of possibilities. Lists that look ahead to 2010 and predict and influence the way we will think, compete, dream, watch, read, listen, eat, drink, plan, travel, splurge… The way we will live.
