Although organizations are excited about using cloud technologies to bring in IT spend efficiency in the organization, they are still apprehensive about data security when migrating to the public cloud, but while Private clouds are really secure, they are also expensive. CtrlS offers a solution that cuts mid-way.

Hyderabad, February 9, 2011

CtrlS, the leading, global data center solution provider today announced another unique solution proposition to their customers, a first-of-its-kind on-demand Private Cloud. Today, almost all organizations, across verticals are eagerly evaluating cloud technologies. Many of them are even considering cloud computing in the immediate future in order to streamline and optimize their IT spend. But typically, the CTO across organization faces the same dilemma before taking a decision: Will I be compromising the security of my organization data by moving into a public cloud?

While Private Clouds are an ideal solution to this problem, it is not exactly a viable solution for small and mid-sized organizations as the spend for the Private Cloud is prohibitively expensive and on-demand scale up or scale down isn’t efficient as the resources are kept idle in both cases.

With CtrlS’s on-demand Private cloud framework, organizations can now avail the benefits of a Private Cloud and also scale up and down as per need as you can in a Public Cloud solution. The costs too are scaled down without any significant additional capex or opex, making it an ideal solution for organizations who want the Private Cloud, yet also have the flexibility of scale and at costs that are definitely not prohibitive.

Says Mr.Sridhar, CMD, CtrlS Datacenters, “On-demand Private Cloud is a never-see-before concept and an extremely innovative framework that we believe will bring cloud computing solutions close to organizations. It is also the ideal solution for small and mid-sized organizations who are eagerly considering a cloud solution, but with robust security features, provision to scale up or down and with costs that fit well into their budgets. On-demand Private Cloud offers the best of both Public and Private Clouds”.

About CtrlS

With over 20,000 racks planned across India, CtrlS is the country’s first and only certified Tier 4 datacenter and is offering cutting-edge DR solutions to over a 100 large enterprises across verticals. CtrlS has invested a lot of time and effort in creating a fault tolerant datacenter which can guarantee an uptime of 99.995%, the highest in datacenter industry. To know more about On-Demand Private Cloud, and our Cloud Computing solutions send us an email to mycloud@ctrls.in or visit www.CtrlS.in

January 19, 2010, Virginia, USA – After toiling under the radar the past six years, InfoWeapons finally emerged and took center-stage at the inaugural Asia CEO Awards.

The company, which has been getting international recognition of late, was chosen by the Asia CEO Forum for its maiden “Technology Leadership Team of the Year” award. Launched only in 2010, the award is one of eight categories intended to recognize both local and foreign companies that have contributed to the promotion of the Philippines on the international stage.

The group, the largest trade and business aggrupation in the Asia Pacific region, cited InfoWeapons’ trailblazing work in leveraging IPv6 technologies to produce cutting-edge products that have brought accolades not only for the company but the Philippines as well. InfoWeapons bested other multinational technology firms like Accenture Philippines, Gurango Software, Morphlabs, and VOIM English. The feat turned not a few heads at the awarding ceremonies held at Dusit Thani Hotel in Manila.

“This award caps an extraordinary year for our company. Our products are now being shipped all over the world and our growing list of customers reads like the who’s-who in the telecom industry,” says Lawrence E. Hughes, who chairs InfoWeapons.

He adds: “This Asia CEO Award is the first recognition coming from within the Philippines, which without knowing it, is host to one of only six IPv6 testing facilities in the world right in the small island of Cebu. I am proud to say that it’s being manned mostly by Filipinos, who are some of the best engineers and software designers in the world.”

Established in 2002 in Georgia, USA, InfoWeapons opened an R&D facility in Cebu in 2004. Shortly thereafter, it rolled out its flagship product, SolidDNS™, which went on to become the first and for awhile the only IPv6-Ready Gold certified DNS-DHCP appliance in the market. Unknown to many and even the local government of Cebu, this facility has already created products that are now being used by customers around the world and competing in markets against multi-national companies with billion-dollar budget for research and development.

Mr. Hughes, a veteran startup entrepreneur and formerly with VeriSign, says: “I’ve formed other companies in the past, but my InfoWeapons team is actually the best and producing better products than any of my previous ventures. We are recognized as one of the leading companies in the move to the Second Internet based on IPv6.”

The Asia CEO Awards is an annual gala event that culminates in the recognition of enterprises and business executives. The search only covered companies doing business in the Philippines, but a broader, region-wide award is being planned. The black-tie event was attended by business leaders in and around the Southeast Asian region. Mr. Hughes and InfoWeapons CEO Luis O. Gopez accepted the award on behalf of the company.

The 2010 finalists in the eight categories included companies like Ayala Land, Banco de Oro, Glaxo SmithKline Philippines, Hyundai Asia Resources, IBM, Unilever Philippines and business leaders Erramon Aboitiz, Felipe Gozon, Fred Ayala and Manuel Pangilinan. The winners in each category are:

1. Banco de Oro – KPMG Executive Leadership Team of the Year

2. The Net Group – Entrepreneurial Leadership Team of the Year

3. Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation – Non-Profit Leadership Team of the Year

4. Manuel V. Pangilinan – Global Filipino Executive of the Year

5. Chandramogan Anamirtham – Jones Lang LaSalle Leechiu Expatriate Executive of the Year

6. Magsaysay Maritime – NorthgateArinso HR Leadership Team of the Year

Incorporating next generation technological advancements into its IP Surveillance solution-by adding optimized layer-2 and layer-3 switches, new media converters, and an enhanced graphical user interface (GUI)-Allied Telesis can now offer greater solution customization with lower costs, as no new wiring is required.

“When building a solution to safeguard their people, organizations cannot take short-cuts or risks,” saidSubhasish Gupta, Country Manager, India & SAARC at Allied Telesis. ”That’s when system integrators and enterprises should align with solution driven vendors like Allied Telesis to deliver high-quality, IP-based video security services over Ethernet networks. Our expertise-both globally and within the country in designing and implementing converged multi-play networks coupled with our advanced IP surveillance solutions enable a seamless migration from analog to digital video security systems, allowing medium & large enterprises to better protect their critical information and employee assets.”

Shown this week at ASIS, the Allied Telesis IP surveillance solution includes several new components-

The AT-8000 Series access-edge switches, designed to enable SD storage and analytics of video content at the edge while cost-effectively connecting local copper devices over fiber at distances of up to 1.2 miles. This capability is ideal in IP video surveillance networks where remote cameras may be located beyond the reach of copper cabling. The AT-8000 Series also offers Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities with unique 24-port connectivity to maximize power, port, and connectivity options when adding new surveillance equipment to the network.

The AT-9000 Series switches, the most affordable layer-2 fiber core switches in the surveillance market, received an upgrade to the AlliedWare Plus operating system. In addition, the AT-9000/28SP small form-factor pluggable (SFP) module fiber distribution switch supports both Fast Ethernet as well as Gigabit Ethernet speeds.

AT-MC 605/606, the two latest media converters from Allied Telesis, enable greater network extension by converting existing analog phone-grade wiring into IP-ready cabling – perfect for mega-pixel IP security video streaming. Through plug-and-play deployment, enterprises can forgo the costly building integrity analysis of network resources, or the cost/need to rewire a premise with expensive Cat5 or fiber cable.

AlliedWare™ Plus, as part of the Allied Telesis Network Operating System (Network OS), provides a common interface across all platforms to minimize training costs associated with IP video network migrations and upgrades, enabling easier support processes.

Vertical Strengths

The Allied Telesis IP surveillance solution is ideal for specialized markets requiring maximum uptime and optimized performance to secure a physical location, information, and/or property. This includes Industrial Grade products. For example, Allied Telesis is working with international healthcare, education, government, service provider, and utility organizations to deploy its leading IP-based video security solutions around the world. Specifically, the Company leads in deploying these solutions to global healthcare facilities for use by emergency response and security teams to ensure patient, staff, and visitor safety. Allied Telesis also recently announced its design and implementation of a real-time IP surveillance solution in the education market in the Hoxie, Arkansas, U.S. School District, in which the Company provides a single-view, remotely managed, port-based virtual local area network (VLAN) to ensure a more secure campus environment for students, faculty, and staff.

In India, Allied Telesis has successfully deployed multiple campuses as well as city surveillance networks in various vertical spaces.

Varanasi Blast – MitKat Advisory

The explosion in the holy town of Varanasi (between Shitla and Dashashwamedh Ghat on the bank of the river Ganges) on the evening of 07 December (killing a child and leaving at least 25, including some foreign tourists, injured) is another grim reminder that anti-India forces are working overtime to disrupt communal harmony and create widespread trouble. The blast, a handiwork of terrorists, took place when thousands of devotees and the foreign tourists had assembled at the ghat (bathing area on holy river bank) for having darshan of the Ganga Arti (a daily lamp ritual). Ammonium nitrate and timer was used (set at the time at which maximum crowds assemble at the ghats). Another IED, which was timed to be set off five minutes after the first one to cause casualties on fleeing public, was later recovered and diffused. Two other bombs have been recovered from nearby areas.
Terrorist group Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the blast saying that it is a response to Ayodhya attacks. In an email sent from Malad, Mumbai, they said, “let us feel the pain”.

Some people have been injured due to the blast and some others due to the consequent stampede which occurred due to the collapse of the railing.
The attack was rich in symbolism. Varanasi is the most visited pilgrimage city in India. It is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh (Ayodhya where Babri Mosque was demolished in 1992 is in the same state). Tuesday is the holy day with maximum crowds (including foreigners). It was the first Tuesday after 06 December. It may be recalled that in March 2006, over 20 people were killed and 60 injured in three explosions in Varanasi.

A high alert has been sounded across the state of UP and in major cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad etc.

What should corporations be telling their employees?

Terrorism and crime is becoming a reality of the times we live in. Post the incident a high alert has been issued across India. Corporations should warn their employees to be more vigilant, be aware of suspicious activities and suspect packages and report them.

• Avoid unnecessary travel. If still travelling be sure to take “in country briefing” and strictly follow “do’s and don’ts.”

• Don’t congregate in public areas. Always be aware of your surroundings. Only travel in appropriate transport and not on your own.

• Avoid passing through known pockets of influence of pro-Hindu groups (like Dadar in Mumbai) or minority ghettos (like Mahim etc. in Mumbai).

• Be extra vigilant; look for signs of trouble; err on the side of caution (in India situation can deteriorate rapidly and spin out of control).

• Avoid public places frequented by and popular with foreign nationals. Exercise high degree of caution especially at tourist sites and government installations. If in shops, sit away from shop windows and always be aware of exit routes.

• Always have a means of communication with you at all time, and make other aware of your whereabouts if travelling outside of you hotel etc.

• BCM and emergency response machinery should be extra prepared to pre-empt and respond adequately to events/incidents/emergencies/developments/intelligence.

•Try to be in areas where there is a security presence.

INDIA SECURITY ADVISORY (NOV – DEC 2010) November-February is usually the peak business season in India with festivals, increased sales [...]

INDIA SECURITY ADVISORY (NOV – DEC 2010)

November-February is usually the peak business season in India with festivals, increased sales of houses, cars and ornaments and CXOs/ Chairpersons of global MNCs flocking to Mumbai, NCR and Bangalore. The period also witnesses an intensification of terrorist activity and heightened threat levels. Terror attacks of 26/11/2008 were carefully timed to achieve strategic impact and to generate media attention. The Babri demolition anniversary falls on December 6 (on this day in 1992, Hindu fundamentalists had destroyed Babri Mosque in Ayodhya); this is seen as another communally sensitive day. The apprehensions of a communal situation are slightly more this year as this the first anniversary after the Allahabad High Court pronounced its verdict in the Ayodhya imbroglio.

The centre has issued a security advisory to the states and Union territories. The agencies feel that a terror attack timed around the anniversary of either 26/11 or Babri demolition could generate wide publicity, apart from sending out a clear message that the terror machinery is still alive and kicking. The Centre has called for heightened vigil and to beef up security at all vital installations (especially those located near the coast and crowded places).Though no specific intercepts have been reported to be received indicating terrorists’ plans to launch fresh terror strike, the Centre is not taking any chances.

Recently two major events, the Commonwealth Games and visit of the US President were held amidst unprecedented security and passed off without any terrorist incident. While India has been witnessing continued left-wing extremist violence in the hinterland (over 800 people have lost their lives this year), no major terrorist strikes post 26/11/2008 and Pune Bakery have taken place. Many more people die in fires, building collapses, road and rail accidents and diseases, which are not widely reported.

Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore have been identified as the most vulnerable cities. The home ministry has asked the states/UTs to deploy additional forces in markets, religious and other public places for tighter surveillance. Terrorists had struck on November 26, 2008, at multiple targets in south Mumbai, including the landmark Taj and Trident hotels, Nariman House, Leopold cafe and CST railway terminus, . killing166 people in the three-day-long mayhem.

Corporations operating in India should caution their employees to be more vigilant and aware of their surroundings.

During 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks Americans, Israelis and other foreigners were targeted by the terrorists. Expatriate employees should be reminded that hotels, markets, and other public places are especially attractive targets for terrorist groups. They should be urged to practice good security, maintain a heightened situational awareness and a low profile. Foreigners / visitors should monitor local news reports and consider the level of security present when visiting public places, including religious sites, or choosing hotels, restaurants, entertainment and recreation venues

Few points which merit attention are as under:

•Foreign nationals should have good in-country briefing before you travel around. Be aware of surroundings and observe security precautions as advised during travel to New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and other major Indian cities (particularly foreign nationals). Try not to ID yourself by wearing your country colours in public.

•Avoid passing through communally sensitive areas and crowded places.

•Be extra vigilant; look for signs of trouble; err on the side of caution (in India situation can deteriorate very quickly). Be aware of suspect packages or suspicious activities and report them

•Avoid public places frequented by and popular with foreign nationals. Exercise high degree of caution especially at tourist sites and government installations. Try to sit away from shop window and always know the exit routes.

•Always have a means of communication with you and make others know about your whereabouts when you are outside the hotel.

•Health precautions against H1N1 and mosquito induced diseases is a must; ensure food and water hygiene.

•In North India (New Delhi), winter fog/smog can be very dense restricting visibility to few metres; this can disrupt schedule of flights and trains, and cause disruptions in road travel. Avoid night travel.

•BCM and emergency response machinery should be extra prepared to pre-empt and respond adequately to events/incidents/emergencies/developments/intelligence.

Indian Tech Companies Highest on Risk Management reveals Marsh India, leading risk advisors and insurance brokers. Regulatory changes, especially in the US, UK & EU are driving many Indian companies to relook at how they do business and manage risks.

Mumbai, November 19, 2010: Marsh India, leading risk advisors and insurance brokers, today said that compared to other sectors/industry verticals, risk management in Indian technology companies has gained significant importance and has emerged as one of the highest priorities for the C-suite.

According to Marsh, regulatory changes in the western world, especially related to privacy and data security, have made it mandatory for most Indian Tech companies to have a robust and formally documented risk management plan. In fact, for many companies this risk management plan goes beyond management of operational risks and focuses on business continuity and issues like succession planning as well. Many technology companies have also created a new department or a position for risk management reporting directly into the board of directors, this and other observations were discussed at the Marsh Annual Technology Conference, titled ‘The changing face of risk’ held in Mumbai today.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Sanjay Kedia Country Head and CEO, Marsh India said, “There are over one thousand technology companies in India and most of them of them have set up formalized risk management departments. This clearly shows that risk management is important for the C-suite and cannot be ignored.”

He further added, “The risk landscape is broadening and changing at a very fast pace and geographic boundaries are blurring. Many Indian technology companies are operating in environments with increasing levels of international regulation and litigation and it is critical to understand these risks as well as the changing attitude towards managing these risks. ”

Marsh India has monitored emerging trends and broad themes related to risk and insurance among Indian technology companies over the last one year, the following findings were highlighted at the technology conference;

§ Risk management has moved up the agenda at the most senior level; risk management functions are being utilized as differentiations while pitching for customer contracts, many companies now have a formal position of Chief Risk Officer reporting to the board

§ Risk is being more formally & objectively addressed at board meetings and in other forums

§ A majority of companies have reviewed their approach to risk because of the downturn and are keen to replicate global best practices, and in some cases pioneer them in India

§ Customers, suppliers and credit/political risk have moved from being one of the lowest to the top risks being monitored by many Indian technology companies

§ Strategic and operational risks like business continuity, currency fluctuations, employee attrition and regulatory changes are being perceived as almost as important as financial and macroeconomic risks

§ Post Satyam incident, there is an increased emphasis on corporate governance, disclosures and transparency beyond what is mandated by the different regulations or listing requirements

§ Regulatory changes, especially in the US, UK & EU are driving many companies to relook at how they do business. Some of these like the US healthcare HITECH Act could be a blessing in disguise which some outsourcing companies are gearing towards capitalizing upon

§ New technologies or developments in older ones like the CLOUD, social networking, open source etc. spell opportunity but are also throwing up challenges related to risk for technology firms in India

Marsh India observed that events like the Satyam along with a spate of high profile bankruptcies and near failures have forced the regulators around the world to become more active, stringent and increasingly cooperative with each other to bring about corrective and disciplinary measures. While earlier there was greater focus on issues like client management from a delivery perspective, these new set of issues and changing risk landscape has compelled technology companies to seek appropriate solutions.

Marsh India is the risk advisor to several mid and large sized technology companies in India and counts all of the top 5 IT companies and 4 of the top 5 ITES companies in India as its clients. With this deep understanding of various risks that the sector faces, the Marsh conference hosted multiple sessions and panel discussions led by experts.

HAAKSBERGEN, NETHERLANDS, 27th October, 2010 – In February 2010, a man working for the UK Police hacked into a computer and stole highly sensitive information about Prince Charles. He obtained officer’s passwords, police station door codes and the electronic signature of the chief constable. Though he did not have any malicious intent, he was sentenced to a 1 year prison sentence.

Richard Soley OMG Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Keynotes at BT Summit 2010

Bangalore, October 18, 2010: The constant rush to new fads and fashions in the Information Technology industry have done little to improve overall software quality; and as computing moves to the cloud, apparently out of our control, quality becomes even more important. Satellite launches famously fail, medical devices famously overdose patients and engines still shut down in flight. Best practices and standards for managing, measuring and improving software implementation processes have had some success (most notably CMMI), but incorrect and incomplete coverage in the industry has left us in a mostly unchanged situation. At the same time, outsourcers and other software development teams have no standardized, widely-adopted way to agree software quality metrics with contractors and purchasers of software. Dr. Richard Soley, Chairman and CEO for OMG, is speaking at Business Technology Summit about a standard to lower costs and increase quality broadly in the software world, driven by static code analysis, software modeling and shared patterns and anti-patterns of good practice. Dr. Soley’s keynote will give an overview of the process and schedule for developing the standard, and the expected uses of of the standard when complete.

Dr. Richard Soley is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for OMG. As Chairman and CEO, Dr. Soley is responsible for the vision and direction of the world’s largest consortium of its type. Dr. Soley joined the nascent OMG as Technical Director in 1989, leading the development of OMG’s world-leading standardization process and the original CORBA® specification. In 1996, he led the effort to move into vertical market standards (starting with healthcare, finance, telecommunications and manufacturing) and modeling, leading first to the Unified Modeling Language (UML®) and later the Model Driven Architecture (MDA®).

Previously, Dr. Soley was a cofounder and former Chairman/CEO of A. I. Architects, Inc., maker of the 386 HummingBoard and other PC and workstation hardware and software. Prior to that, he consulted for various technology companies and venture firms on matters pertaining to software investment opportunities. Dr. Soley has also consulted for IBM, Motorola, PictureTel, Texas Instruments, Gold Hill Computer and others. He began his professional life at Honeywell Computer Systems working on the Multics operating system. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A., Dr. Soley holds the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Cloud and SOA Expert Dr. Chris Harding will be Speaking at Business Technology Summit 2010 to be held 11-12 November 2010 in Bangalore. He will be speaking on the topics ranging from Using Cloud in Your Enterprise Architecture, Managing Cloud Risks, SOA for Interoperability and SOA Governance.

Bangalore, October 19, 2010: Recognizing the importance of giving enterprises quality information at the point of use, Dr. Chris Harding sees information interoperability as the next major challenge. He leads the SOA Working Group at The Open Group – an open forum of customers and suppliers of IT products and services. In addition, he is a Director of UDEF Forum, and manages The Open Group’s work on semantic interoperability. At Business Technology Summit 2010, to be held 11-12 November 2010 in Bangalore Dr. Harding will speak about Using Cloud in Your Enterprise Architecture, Managing Cloud Risks, SOA for Interoperability, and SOA Governance:

* Using Cloud in Your Enterprise Architecture (11 Nov): cloud computing presents enterprises with major opportunities, not only for cost savings but, more importantly, to improve their service delivery, and to enter new markets with innovative service offerings. But it is not possible to do this just by waving a magic wand. How cloud should be used needs careful consideration. Will it replace existing IT, and, if so, how will the enterprise manage the transition? Will it be added to and complement in-house IT and, if so, how should they be integrated? It is the business of enterprise architects to resolve such questions. The Open Group has produced the industry standard framework, TOGAF, which is used by many enterprise architects to guide their decisions. Participants will learn: the architectural considerations involved in using Cloud Computing within the enterprise, and the approaches that can be taken by enterprise architects to use Cloud effectively.

* Managing Cloud Risks (11 Nov): cloud Computing has significant benefits, but can also carry significant risks. Many enterprises, for example, are concerned about risks associated with security, data protection, and cost control. If they are to use cloud computing, they need to understand these risks, and understand how to manage them. This presentation will describe an approach, based on scorecards, to identifying, monitoring, and managing the main risks associated with cloud computing. Attendees will learn: what the main risks are, how to monitor them, and how to mitigate their effects.

* SOA for Interoperability: integrating applications – and now Cloud services – is a major challenge for enterprise architects. Each of these components is designed to deliver a particular set of functionality, and probably does this very well. But different applications and services are designed separately and generally do not inter-operate with each other. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) has become established as an architectural style within which different components can inter-operate so that applications and external services can be integrated within an overall enterprise architecture. This presentation will describe the latest state-of-the-art of SOA, and explain how enterprise architects can use it to achieve interoperability, following best-practice methods developed by The Open Group based on the experience of its members. Participants will learn: how SOA delivers interoperability, a standard reference architecture for SOA, and how to use the Open Group’s standard architecture framework TOGAF to develop a service-oriented enterprise architecture.

* SOA Governance: from the earliest days of SOA, it has been widely recognized that good governance is crucial for successful deployment. It has also been recognized that SOA governance is difficult. In the first place, this was partly just because SOA was new. Secondly, it is also because SOA requires a different way of working to traditional architectural styles, with different roles and responsibilities. Thirdly, and perhaps most significantly, enterprises using SOA learn as they go, and change the way they do things as they learn, which means that their governance must be adaptable and flexible. This presentation will describe the Open Group SOA Governance Framework. This is a standard governance framework developed by The Open Group using the experience of its member companies. It includes a standard SOA governance reference model, and a vitality method by which you can create a flexible and adaptive SOA governance regimen for your enterprise. Participants will learn: the importance of SOA governance, the Open Group SOA Governance Reference Model, and how to develop an enterprise SOA governance regimen using the SOA Governance Vitality Method.

CA, Microsoft, IBM and CollabNet Lock Horns in the Change & Configuration Management Tools Category Bangalore, March 18, 2010: Configuration [...]

CA, Microsoft, IBM and CollabNet Lock Horns in the Change & Configuration Management Tools Category

Bangalore, March 18, 2010: Configuration Management is about managing configurations. Simply put, this means identifying the configuration and managing the changes that surround it. Managing changes to the configuration broadly falls under the domain of change control. A good change control process and tool set will help ensure that only the most appropriate changes are being made to a product. A robust process of this kind will also give the team easy access to all configurations and change data, including full traceability information.

Tool support for change and configuration control has evolved quite a bit over the decades. Initially it started as the ability to have an exclusive lock on a file when you checked it out – this was the “state-of-the-art” as the ’60s moved into the ’70s. The concept of change packages, or updates, introduced progressively through the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s, were instrumental in moving change control along. Of course, we’ve come a long way since then. Change control must begin far earlier in the cycle than code changes.

A significant portion of IT related news this last decade has been dominated by mergers and acquisitions. Most notable in the areas of configuration and change management are the acquisitions of both Rational and Telelogic by IBM. One of the new players, AccuRev, has grabbed a number of converts. At the same time Subversion has captured significant Open Source interest. CollabNet’s enterprise focused offering of Subversion has become widely popular and recently Subversion has been accepted into the Apache Incubator, a first step in becoming a top-level project of the Apache Software Foundation.

When one thinks of Enterprise CM, three things come to mind:

• Tools (and processes) that expand configuration management from the software team to the product team
• Processes (and standards) that help keep configuration management consistent across the enterprise
• Infrastructure (and management) that pushes configuration management technology into the rest of the organization

Enterprise configuration management is not a simple feature, process or edict. It is the establishment of tools, processes and infrastructure so that the management can confidently reap the benefits of change and configuration management as well as application lifestyle management (ALM) across the enterprise.

One of the big problems is that organizations often dictate a tool to be used across the enterprise. A vast majority of the time, the wrong tool is mandated resulting in budget crunches, resource crunches and capability shortfalls.

Establishing an enterprise-wide tool requires understanding the CM/ALM process across the Enterprise, and then selecting tools that can be used to support an overall process and framework. This requires expertise and experience. One project is not the same as another. An Agile project which is delivering a constant stream of releases to stay ahead of the competition is much different than an infrastructure project which is occasionally upgrading repository technology. A development team of 3 or 4 is much different than one of 300 to 400. Yet these variations exist in any large corporation.

Saltmarch Media’s annual Great Indian Developer Awards honors software products across 12 categories, based on their productivity, innovation excellence, universal usefulness, simplicity, functionality and most importantly on the ground feedback from India’s software developer ecosystem. In the Change and Configuration Management tools Category, the final shortlist consists of CA Software Change Manager, Microsoft’s System Centre Configuration Manager, IBM’S Rational Software Architect, Microsoft’s Visual Studio Team System 2008 and CollabNet’s SubVersion. Microsoft’s Visual Studio Team System was the first product to win in this category in 2008 followed by CollabNet’s SourceForge Enterprise Edition in the 2009 chapter of the same awards.

If there is a particular development environment that you personally endorse to your colleagues or you evangelize about them at the first opportunity you get, here is your chance to vote for it (voting closes April 10 2010) and see it win this prestigious award. Visit the 2010 Great Indian Developer Awards website and cast your vote. It counts! Voting is open from http://www.developersummit.com/gida3_llist.
