The 108 service attended to 14272 pregnancies related cases and 381 babies were delivered inside the ambulance in last one year in Sagar. And not a single mother and a child had died in the ambulance in pregnancy related emergency cases handled by 108 ERS.

Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior , Indore, Rewa, Sagar , Datia, Damoh and Sehore districts are covered completely by the service with 99 ambulances. In these districts, if anyone had called 108 for help, then the ambulance had reached in an average time of 20 minutes.

Flagging off a Walkathon organized by the Karnataka Institute of Diabetology on the occasion of ‘World Diabetes Day’ on November 14, Monday, in Bangalore, Mr. Gowda emphasized the need for leading a stress-free life. “All of us are under tremendous pressure…Our life style and work culture has changed. Politicians are no exception to this changing trend. Diabetes has now become a silent killer. We need comprehensive efforts to tackle the situation,” the chief minister added.

Pointing out that approximately 66.2 million of the world’s total 222 million diabetics were from India, Mr. Gowda said the Karnataka government had implemented several programs to address the issue through its agencies and various hospitals.

“We have opened the Karnataka Institute of Diabetology, a world class institute, which has the best of the facilities for diabetics. All facilities are being offered under a single roof. We have various plans to further improve the facilities. Over the next two years, Karnataka Institute of Diabetology will emerge as the best such centre in the country. I am very happy that the Karnataka Institute of Diabetology is doing a wonderful service as a government-run institute,” Mr. Gowda added.

“Diabetes Mellitus (Diabetes) is the common non-communicable disease worldwide. Almost 10 per cent to 12 per cent of adults aged above 25 years suffer from diabetes. This is one disease which doesn’t discriminate people on the basis of income/ caste/ creed/ urban/rural affecting everybody. The United Nations has declared November 14 as the World Diabetes Day to spread awareness and improve diabetes prevention and management,” said Dr. K.R. Mumbai, November 9th, 2011: With the whopping 62 million diabetic people in the country, the sugar disease has pushed India to the top to be reckoned as the ‘Diabetes Capital of the World’. To address the growing need of effective management, treatment and timely detection of Diabetes Mellitus, a three-day conference was organized by Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) at Hotel Renaissance, Powai.

Held on November 4th, 5th and 6th, 2011, the 39th Annual Meeting of the RSSDI concentrated on the innovative technologies and devices that can benefit diabetic patients in the country. Professor Shashank Joshi, President RSSDI and Consultant Endocrinologist Lilawati Hospital Mumbai, revealed that, this year the theme for RSSDI annual conference was ‘Eat Less, Eat Right, Eat On Time, Walk More, Sleep Well And Smile’.

Workshop(s) were organized on the new-age insulin pump therapy. Modern insulin pumps are advanced devices that help in 24*7 regulation of blood glucose levels of the patients by administering the right dosage of insulin into the patient’s body. Insulin pump therapy also provides automated controls. The patient, Mr. Allaik Balakrushna Vaidya (57) from Navsari suffered from chronic liver disease for the last few months and was advised by the doctors that he should undergo a liver transplant surgery as soon as possible. The lack of an organ to transplant posed a problem for the family but bravely his son Mr. Chirag Vaidya (31) came forward and agreed to donate a part of his life to give life to his father.

Dr. Subash Gupta, Chief Consultant Liver Transplantation, Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi who has been guiding the development of liver transplantation across several Apollo Hospitals including Ahmedabad said, “This success shows the collective strength of the Apollo Hospitals Group. The living donor liver transplant surgery is considerably more complicated than a cadaver liver transplant”, he commented.
