Friday, December 16th, was privy to an evening of celebration, festivities and art. The evening, besides exhibiting rare cherished pictures from Husain’s personal life, witnessed the launch of Pradeep Chandra’s coffee table book on the ‘Picasso of India’, Maqbool Fida Husain at Gallery Art & Soul, Worli in the presence of Husain’s children- Shafat, Akeela and Raisa and grand children- Anita, Manisha and Rabiaba. The event also witnessed presence of city glitterati including Nandita Das, Anil Dharker, Dolly Thakore, Pervez Damania, Dr. Batra and couple of artists. The book was inaugurated by Husain’s family and Anil Dharker read a few excerpt from it.
The book, M. F. Husain – A Pictorial Tribute, features a collection of 236 photographs of the barefoot artist who passed away on June 9. Lensman Pradeep Chandra, in his book, has managed to feature every aspect of Husain’s personality captured in over three decades, besides including photographs of Husain celebrating his birthday, enjoying every minute of his life, painting faces from the silver screen and his bare feet.
Talking about the delightful discovery of Husain’s life, Mr. Chandra said, “Husain loved to be photographed, perhaps as much as I loved to photograph him. There have been many books on the artist dealing essentially with his art but in my book, 220 pages out of its 228 contain photographs of M.F. Husain and not his paintings. He had taken most of the photographs from me and he was to publish the book initially but it didn’t work out. During the course, I realized that he was quite fond of looking at his own images. He was a very good actor and brilliant in front of the camera.”
It is not merely a Photographer’s Tribute as Husain’s paintings express innumerable images about his view towards life including enough anecdotes and observations which makes the book an interesting piece of art.

“It gives us immense pleasure to be hosting such a prestigious exhibition and book launch. This is not just an event showcasing the works of the Master, but rather remembering the ‘man behind the canvas’. Featuring photographs of M. F. Husain by itself is a matter of pride for our gallery,” says Ms. Tarana Khubchandani, Director, Gallery Art & Soul.
“The pictures can’t be classified into one category. They cover a large part of his life,” concludes Chandra, who had earlier brought out a book on Amitabh Bachchan titled, ‘AB: The Legend’.
Pradeep Chandra has been associated with Bombay Times, Indian Express, Illustrated Weekly & other prominent publications. He has done several exhibitions like Haveli Dreams, (based on Shekhawati), Kashmiri Pandits, and Britain (to commemorate 50 Years of Indian Independence) and has been a part of various art camps as well. He is the author of the coffee table book on Amitabh Bachchan titled “AB The Legend – A Photographer’s Tribute” and “M F Husain – A Pictorial Tribute”.
About Gallery Art & Soul: Gallery Art & Soul is a large art space in the heart of Worli, and enjoys the privilege of working with a huge cross section of artists. It is recognized by the artist community as an exciting space with uniquely conceptualized and well executed art events. This is reflected in their large database of artists and the gallery showcase of works of over 100 established artists, spanning over 8 decades. The artist relations are fostered through reputable tie ups in the domestic and international art scenarios.

IndianArtCollectors.com showcases Dhananjay Mukherjee’s “The Green God”

IndianArtCollectors.com on the last fortnight of the year features the imagination and sensitivity of an eminent artist Dhanajay Mukherjee. Dhanajay has been painting for the last 25 years. He creates graphic and structural uniformity on canvas through the play of light and shade. His paintings are a judicious mix of the abstract and realistic forms, which stems from unique imagination, combining the real natural world with the artistic and creative world.

According to him green is the colour of life, but human beings, through ages, have exploited it without understanding how pristine and important it is for life on earth. Artist Dhananjay Mukherjee, in his unique set of paintings titled “The Green God” urges people to respect it by personifying the flora in godly images and figures. The different faces in Mukherjee’s paintings are carved out of a leaf with various motifs forming the eyes and lips. Dhananjay finds modernism on canvas with the help of old mythological art, expressing the same through remarkable use of colours to depict the unknown mysteries in the natural world. He paints with oil and acrylic on canvas. “I got the idea for this theme from the trees, flowers and the leaves around me. Somehow they appear to be forming an image which looks very much like a human face or an animal shape or form,” says Mukherjee.

He feels that nature gives us everything we need in our life, yet we never return the favour. The purpose of his paintings is to inculcate faith in nature. “I believe with my paintings I can bring people to see the divinity inside every green form, be it a plant, a tree trunk or even a leaf,” adds Dhananjay.

New Delhi, December 1, 2011: Director Ranjit Kapoor’s play ‘Sab Thaat paraa reh Jayega’ tickled the funny bone of audiences at the Shri Ram Center for Performing Arts (Mandi House). The play was showcased as part of the ongoing Bhartendu Natya Utsav organized by Sahitya Kala Parishad (SKP), the cultural wing of the Delhi Government.

In today’s time when stress is omnipresent Sab Thaat paraa reh Jayega amused the theatre-lovers to the core as the ‘comedy’ celebrated little joys of life. The play outlined two opposing ideologies through a situational humorous anecdote representing two families – the Mehtas and the Singhaniyas.

In the words of Director Ranjit Kapoor, “Sab Thaat paraa reh Jayega is a sitcom play. At first the Mehta family seems mad, but it is not long before one realizes that if they are mad, then the rest of the world is crazier! In contrast to these delightful people is the unhappy industrialist family – the Singhaniyas. The play’s hero Ashutosh, the attractive young son of the Singhaniyas, falls in love with Vinnie Mehta-Mukherjee and brings his parents to dine at the Mehta house on the wrong evening. The humor arises as events unfold that evening and leave the audience light-hearted and refreshed.” The audience enjoyed the evening as they experienced the ‘meaning of life’ via Sab Thaat paraa reh Jayega through shock sustained by Mr. and Mrs. Singhaniya, in this mad-mad house of Shri S.N. Mehta.

Sh. Shekhar Vaishnavi, Secretary, SKP, said, “At Bhartendu Natya Utsav, theatre enthusiasts will experience a range of emotions; every day a new one, as they will enjoy classic performances by theatre artists. This year we have selected some of the best directors from the world of theatre and given them a chance to present their best creation at the Utsav. Today’s play ‘Sab Thaat paraa reh Jayega’ has left the audience in a cheerful mood and this is what we had hoped for. We are looking forward to more such wonderful presentations on the remaining days of the event.”

Bhartendu Natya Utsav is a celebration of the timeless relevance and essence of theatre as seen in the works of Poet, Playwright and thinker, Bharatendu Harishchandra. As part of the Utsav, Delhi’s theatre enthusiasts will be able to witness the masterworks of country’s best theatre directors on 8 days. The upcoming performances are that of Devender Raj Ankur’s Vaapasi Ke Baad Ayodhya Babu (Dec 1, 2011), Torit Mitra’s Garbh (Dec 5, 2011), Baapi Bose’s Socrates (Dec 6, 2011), Satish Anand’s Ek Inspector Se Mulakaat (Dec 7, 2011) and Bhanu Bharti’s Tamasha Na Hua (Dec 8, 2011).

Director Sohaila Kapur’s tour de force play showcased on Day 2 of Bhartendu Natya Utsav
New Delhi, November 30, 2011: Representing a myriad no. of feelings, Director Sohaila Kapur’s play ‘O’ (pronounced as English alphabet O) provided the audience an unmatchable experience on Day 2 of Bhartendu Natya Utsav.
Organized by Sahitya Kala Parishad (SKP), the cultural wing of the Delhi Government, the ongoing theatre festival (at the Shri Ram Center for Performing Arts, Mandi House) is a celebration of the timeless relevance and essence of theatre as seen in the works of Poet, Playwright and thinker, Bharatendu Harishchandra. As part of the Utsav, Delhi’s theatre enthusiasts will be able to witness the masterworks of country’s best theatre directors on 8 days.

Sohaila Kapur’s ‘O’ is the representation of infinite possibilities. It can be Shunya, or the great Nothingness from which life emerges, it also represents orgasm, the feminine Principle, an egg, the Primordial universe, or the divine absolute. In this context, it is the story of two women who went through those infinite possibilities, to choose a life that incorporated struggle, bending the rules in the bargain, revered in the end by the very men who subjugated them.

According to Ms. Sohaila Kapur, “O depicts the tale of two extraordinary women who are saint-poets – Rabia, the Sufi from Iraq and Karraikal Ammayar, the Shaivite from Tamil Nadu. They are opposites in nature yet they battle similar obstacles to attain their spiritual goals. The play reveals their fight against religious dogma, rituals and clerics. Through these strong characters the play O preaches a philosophy of universal love and egalitarianism.”

Sh. Shekhar Vaishnavi, Secretary, SKP, said, “We are happy to see the response of people on the first two days of the Bhartendu Natya Utsav. There are more heart warming performances to come. Since this year we have selected some of the best directors from the world of theatre and given them a chance to present their best creation, the event is bound to be a multisensory treat to the attending audience.”
The other performances to come are Ranjit Kapoor’s Sab Thaat Paraa Reh Jayega (Nov 30, 2011), Devender Raj Ankur’s Vaapasi Ke Baad Ayodhya Babu (Dec 1, 2011), Torit Mitra’s Garbh (Dec 5, 2011), Baapi Bose’s Socrates (Dec 6, 2011), Satish Anand’s Ek Inspector Se Mulakaat (Dec 7, 2011) and Bhanu Bharti’s Tamasha Na Hua (Dec 8, 2011).

New Delhi, November 28, 2011: To promote progressive and dynamic theatre among the cityⳠliterati and culture enthusiasts, Sahitya Kala Parishad (SKP), the cultural wing of the Delhi Government, will be presenting eight theatre performances as part of the Bhartendu Natya Utsav from 28th November to 8th December, 2011 (except 2nd, 3rd and 4th December, 2011). These plays will be staged at Shri Ram Center for Performing Arts (SRCPA), 4, Safdar Hashmi Marg, Mandi House, New Delhi.

An annual theatre event Bhartendu Natya Utsav will be presented this year with a different approach. Earlier the selection committee comprising of leaders from diverse fields unrelated to any theatre group (in Delhi) were appointed every year by SKP to select 8 10 outstanding plays of the year that were then presented at the festival. However, this year the format has been changed and instead of choosing the best plays, this year, they have chosen the best directors and have given them the liberty to showcase any of their plays, which they think is their best creation, in this festival.

Many eminent theatre directors will be presenting their best plays during this festival:
28th November 2011 栠Mr. Rajender Nath (Play:Tyagpatra),
29th November 2011- Ms. Sohela Kapoor (Play: 0),
30th November 2011- Ranjit Kapoor- (Play: Aadamzaat),
1st December 2011- Devender Raj Ankur- (Play: Vaapasi Ke Baad Ayodhya Babu),
5th December 2011- Torit Mitra (Play: Garbh),
6th December 2011- Baapi Bose (Play: Socrates),
7th December 2011- Satish Anand (Play: Ek Inspector Se Mulakaat) and
8th December 2011- Bhau Bharti (Play: Tamasha Na Hua)

The theatrical event will not be less than a treat to theatre enthusiasts According to Sh. Shekhar Vaishnavi, Secretary, SKP, 㓨owcasing the best theatre performances under one roof to give a tremendous experience to the viewers is the main ob-jective of Bhartendu Natya Utsav and Sahitya Kala Parishad is pleased to organize this event once again this year. The format, however, has been changed slightly.ࠉn the past the committee formed by Sahitya Kala Parishad used to select best plays to be showcased during this event but this year the committee has selected some of the best directors from the world of theatre and has given them the liberty to present their best creation at the event. We are expecting good response from the public on this change.伯i>

These plays will be staged at Shri Ram Center for Performing Arts (SRCPA), 4, Safdar Hashmi Marg, Mandi House, New Delhi.
An annual theatre event Bhartendu Natya Utsav will be presented this year with a different approach. Earlier the selection committee comprising of leaders from diverse fields unrelated to any theatre group (in Delhi) were appointed every year by SKP to select 8 – 10 outstanding plays of the year that were then presented at the festival. However, this year the format has been changed and instead of choosing the best plays, this year, they have chosen the best directors and have given them the liberty to showcase any of their plays, which they think is their best creation, in this festival.
Many eminent theatre directors will be presenting their best plays during this festival:
28th November 2011 – Mr. Rajender Nath (Play:Tyagpatra),
29th November 2011- Ms. Sohela Kapoor (Play: 0),
30th November 2011- Ranjit Kapoor- (Play: Aadamzaat),
1st December 2011- Devender Raj Ankur- (Play: Vaapasi Ke Baad Ayodhya Babu),
5th December 2011- Torit Mitra (Play: Garbh),
6th December 2011- Baapi Bose (Play: Socrates),
7th December 2011- Satish Anand (Play: Ek Inspector Se Mulakaat) and
8th December 2011- Bhau Bharti (Play: Tamasha Na Hua)
The theatrical event will not be less than a treat to theatre enthusiasts According to Sh. Shekhar Vaishnavi, Secretary, SKP, “Showcasing the best theatre performances under one roof to give a tremendous experience to the viewers is the main objective of Bhartendu Natya Utsav and Sahitya Kala Parishad is pleased to organize this event once again this year. The format, however, has been changed slightly. In the past the committee formed by Sahitya Kala Parishad used to select best plays to be showcased during this event but this year the committee has selected some of the best directors from the world of theatre and has given them the liberty to present their best creation at the event. We are expecting good response from the public on this change.”

New Delhi, Two artists art exhibition of recent paintings of Pratibha Singh and Anju Kaushik will be held from 3rd December, 2011 at Shridharani Gallery, Triveni Kala Sangam, 205 Tansen Marg near Mandi House, New Delhi. This exhibition will be available for public viewing till 12th December 2011 from 11:00 AM to 07:00 PM daily.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Pratibha Singh

The artist is born and brought up in Varanasi. She was inclined towards art field since her childhood. But after doing her graduation she realized that art and she are made for each other and she took it as her career. After her marriage she shifted to Delhi and got the opportunity to join TRIVENI KALA SANGAM. Since then she is associated with Triveni Kala Sangam as Artist under personal guidance of internationally acclaimed artist Mr. RAMESWAR BROOTA. Since then she has executed more than 150 art works in the medium ranging from Charcoal on paper to acrylic on canvas to oil on canvas. However since last 8 years she is mainly working in “OIL ON CANVAS”. The artist chooses subjects of her paintings from day to day
life and correlate the theme of her paintings with daily life.

About The Paintings Being Showcased

Now a days human beings are surrounded by the things created by them rather than natural things. This is particularly true for urban population as they are surrounded by all the man made mechanical things. Now we have no other option but to find mental peace and harmony in these mechanical things only. In the paintings being exhibited in this show the artist has blended mankind which is created by the nature and machines which have been created by man. The artist had portrayed beauty of softness against hardness of machines in these paintings. These also show merging point of hardness & softness, large & small, live & still and natural & manmade.

Pratibha Singh’s paintings envision a symbiotic world of human beings and machines. Happy transformation of bold and bald male figures into strong and sturdy (lean and mean) two wheelers happens in her works as if it were a celebration on the birth of a new being. According to Pratibha Singh, this transformation of human beings into semi-machines is a positive and progressive thing though she has some critical points to add to it. She says that even if we do not want the organic nature of human beings turning to certain mechanisms, contemporary world and its life style is such that one cannot move away from such changes. However, in her works, the human beings and the machines are not in conflict. They seem to have grown into each other and have created a inseparable bonding between them. Hence, Pratibha’s works capture the essential relationship between man and machine and the sensuous and erotic possibilities of it.

Views of Critiques about Pratibha’s Works

Mr. Keshav Malik, a renound art critic and writer says about the paintings of the artist:

“Pratibha Singh’s work is not sci-fi, but then she has used the same vision to compound contrary elements. In her hands the organic and the inorganic are brought into wedlock, apart from human-cum-animal forms. Now of course the new technology, that of medical inventions, have done so already, as in orthopedics. That is, it has taken recourse to the non-living to aid the living and the breathing. But that is a means to survival, an aid to life. The artist’s aim is surely otherwise. For all art is devised for our inner introspection, for our retrospection; so that we play with our emotions of fear and wonder and what not in order that our awareness expands in freedom. We human are speculative creatures, and especially so our vanguard, the artists who exercise their imagination to the hilt. It is so this artist invents, not super realistic images, but of an evolutionary artistic designer’s. And she does this with consummate skill and precision – almost with a technologic exactitude. The feel of her work is as of a scientific detachment, not of melodrama. She is tight-lipped, as to whether, her hybrids are revulsion causing or emotionally engaging. But still she does obliquely hint at the shape of things to come in the temporal world

JOHNY ML a renound art critic and writer says about the paintings of Pratibha:

“Unlike most of the woman artists in our times, Pratibha is not so keen to be an avowed ‘feminist’ artist. Her works, even when they are celebratory, do not highlight the so called delicate women figures or the hallmark imageries of the woman artists, such as stitching, threading, smearing of red colour reminding the viewer of menstrual streams and so on. On the contrary, she looks at man from a woman’s perspective and the positive feelings that she nurtures towards man keep her out of the quotidian conflict. According to Pratibha, the images of man as seen from a woman’s point of view, and his relationship with the machines around him suggest the progress of our society.

However, a closer view of the works of Pratibha would reveal that by hiding or obliterating the presence of women from her pictorial surfaces or even by denying their right to be represented in certain forms in a work of art that too created by a woman herself, Pratibha subtly brings forth the state of affairs in their actuality. One could also read her works as strong critique on men who itch to transform themselves into machines every day. There is a generalization in there; the artist wants to say that the human beings while focusing on growth and progress move away from the basic values of life.

The canvases created by Pratibha Singh are contemplative and celebratory at the same time. The choice of colours is deep and gives the works the depth and power that she wants to convey. At times she tends to capture how even the other animals including cows and bulls become machine like in a society like ours. Progress and development are brought here for critical reviewing. The artist creates a counter point to this kind of ‘power-change’ by painting a man in the form of a contortionist or a yoga practitioner. This man bends backwards to achieve an extreme posture. Is this one metaphor that Pratibha incorporates in her work to camouflage her criticism, one would wonder. A hand from an unidentified person supports the bending man. Is that fate or super consciousness? Is that we call God? Or is that what Pratibha suggests others to have compassion and care, while one blindly forces himself towards progress and development, like a machine? I think Pratibha’s works answers these questions in a very aesthetical fashion.”

Dr Subodh Mahanti, a well-known science writer and critic says about paintings of Pratibha:

“Human beings could move from the Stone Age to the Space Age because some of them dared to imagine differently. Human imagination not only changed the ways they lived but also the ways they thought. And this process continues…The integration of human and machine has been a popular theme in science fiction, an important art form. In a sense the concept has moved from the pages of science fiction books to reality in the forms of artificial limbs and mechanical aids used by human beings. Pratibha Singh, an accomplished artist, through her artistic expression has visualized this integration in altogether different dimension…She is bold enough to exaggerate, transform, and deform nature to generalize and synthesize her observations…It is very likely that the integration of human, machine and natural objects will create a world which will be altogether different from the existing one. As someone said, “we live in a world where dream and reality interchange.”…The images visualized by Pratibha Singh can stimulate the scientists, technologists and inventors engaged in the integration of human and machine to think in a different perspective. The images are powerful enough to stimulate creative expressions by others of a future where the man-machine integration will be the key element.”

ANJU KAUSHIK

Trained under the veteran artist, Rameshwar Broota. After doing graduation in science stream and MBA she choose art
ABOUT MY WORK———–
I am defining lines through perspective, movement, flow and colour. My painting is somewhat related to an optical art, form of Abstract art, which uses repetition of simple forms and colors to create vibrating effects, moiré patterns, foreground-background confusion, an exaggerated sense of depth, and other visual effects. In a sense, my all paintings are based on visual perception: manipulating rules of perspective to give the illusion of three-dimensional space, mixing colors to create the impression of light and shadow.
Perspective allows me to control the illusion of depth in an image with space ranging from a few inches to many miles. Simple single lines amassed in intriguing movements across a page can be a very rich drawing, full of intricate rivelets of various sizes and curvilinear swings which surprise and please the eye. Line as movement drawings can be composed of hundreds of lines. The exciting design aspect is that it is always being created and continues to change until the very end. It’s a composition that is unexpected, planned from line to line, and space to space and allows me full control of movement from here to there. My lines begin and blend into each other, the path sometimes hard to discern.
Truly, line is a beautiful element, all by itself.

Writer ,art critic Aruna Bhowmick says about Anju Kaushik

Remarkable about Anju’s approach is the fact that she uses the tools of Optical art, perceptually kinetic in its intent, as her device for conveying quite the opposites of calm and ease. Geometry-based, her works are mostly non-representational, except perhaps the light at the end of the tunnel, signifying hope and joy, radiating energy achieved by efficient colour management both in terms of power and finesse. Positive and negative spaces share equal importance, where clearly, one could not be created without the other.

In the manner of Optical art painters she has devised complex optical spaces by manipulating repetitive forms such as parallel lines, checkerboard patterns and concentric circles, or by creating chromatic tensions from the juxtaposition of complementary colours, creating illusions of movement. This creation of effects through the use of pattern and line, wavy lines placed close to one another on the pictorial surface, creating such a volatile figure-ground relationship, is never allowed to reach a point that begins to hurt the viewer’s eyes. This substantiates another earlier observation that “her best is courteous towards the viewer.”

JohnyML Writer, Critic, Curator, Translator has written about Anju Kaushik that she is an artist who employs the possibilities of optical illusion and the fundamental theories of Op Art in order to mould and define her creative life. she has carved out a niche for herself as her works have this distinct quality of optical illusions. Though Anju clearly wishes to create dazzling optical illusions in her works, her body of works takes the viewer beyond the momentary pleasure of optical titillation. She has a tremendous sense of abstraction and design that helps her to articulate her personal philosophy on contemporary life and society through these visually exciting works.

According to my views, the ‘skin’ of Anju’s works represents the exterior glitters of the contemporary life. The outer skin of the society, especially in the fast globalizing world through liberal economy and neo-imperialism, looks so beautiful and alluring that it almost functions like a desire trap. What Anju addresses here in these terms is the idea of transparency; transparency in anything that facilitates a dignified life for the social beings. But once caught in this desire trap, people tend to forget the dangers and they fall victim to all kinds of desires. By repeating the illusionary representation of the forms and shapes, Anju reminds the viewer of the nuances and allurement of our contemporary life.
However, political correctness is not the only point of departure and indulgence for Anju. As an artist with great facility and technical skill, she enjoys the abstract values evolve from within these optical works. Abstraction, considering the visual art context, also for Anju is the fundamental essence of a work of art whether it is figurative or non-figurative. Through the depiction of the ‘essence’ and the essential, Anju attempts to touch at the core of two things; one, a style called Op Art and two, the life itself. There is a sort of meditative abandonment as well as creative deliberation seen evident in her works. They demand complete attention from the viewers and at the same time, the works ask the viewer to scientifically detach from the surface of the work and see the core of it through deeper contemplation.
To gain this end, Anju abstracts human bodies, objects and spaces in her works. The human bodies as seen in her works are extremely beautiful and voluptuous. But before the eyes of a viewer they do not come as desirous bodies, instead they create an anthropomorphic illusion, throwing the ‘image mass’ between the shape of human body and that of the animal body. Anju seems to be deriving a lot of pleasure through adding up certain amount of precariousness in most of her works, especially in a painting where she paints a few cups stacked up in a very precarious way. The visual pleasure of Anju’s works is extended as she chooses to paint on canvases of varying sizes. But cutting down uniformity, Anju revels in variety and she guides her viewers into a realm of pure visual pleasure and contemplation.

Dharamvir Bharti’s celebrated play Andha Yug to be staged at the medieval monument after nearly five decades

Many eminent theatre and cinema personalities to participate in the play

New Delhi, Friday, October 7th, 2011: In a bid to revive ‘theatre’ as an effectual medium of mass communication, Sahitya Kala Parishad, the cultural wing of the Delhi Government, is going to present “Andha Yug”, Padamshree Dharmavir Bharti’s play in the capital from 15 to 19 October 2011. Delhi will re-witness this historical play at the remains of the Kotla Feroz Shah fort, one of the city’s heritage monuments from medieval India, after a long hiatus of 49 years. Andha Yug (The Blind Age), one of the most significant plays of modern India, has been staged by numerous directors in various Indian languages. However, this is the first time that it will be presented in such a grandeur manner by the Sahitya Kala Parishad. Set in the backdrop of the historical remains of Kotla Feroz Shah, the play will be presented under the directorship of Bhanu Bharti – one of the most innovative Theatre Director and Playwright in the country today. Andha Yug has been formerly staged at Kotla Feroz Shah way back in 1962 by renowned theatre personality Ebrahim Alkazi.

Many eminent theatre and television personalities will be seen enacting the characters of the five-act play Andha Yug, which is set in the last day of the Great Mahabharata war. Participating in the play will be veteran theatre personalities such as Mohan Maharishi (as Dhritarashtra), Uttara Baokar (as Gandhari), noted TV and Bollywood actor – Zakir Hussain (as Sanjay), Govind Pandey (as Kripacharya), Teekam Joshi (as Ashwathama), Ravi Jhankal (as Vidhur), Danish Iqbal (as Kritavarma), Ravi Jhankal (as Yachak), Kuldeep Sarren and Amitabh Srivastava (both as Prahari) and Kumud Mishra (as mute soldier). The play will sport 53 characters, out of which 11 main characters will be there along with the supporting cast. The introductory voice-over shall be lent by versatile and impressive actor Om Puri. The costumes of this epic play will be undertaken by Amba Sanyal, a celebrated costume designer and receiver of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

The theatrical event will provide an excellent platform to the upcoming artists of the theatre. According to Sh. Shekhar Vaishnavi, Secretary, Sahitya Kala Parishad, “The staging of Andha Yug at Kotla Feroz Shah is an attempt to popularize Indian theatre among the younger generation. Theatre is a rich, versatile and highly expressive medium of mass communication. It is often viewed as the medium of intellectuals. However, youngsters these days seem to be withdrawn from the world of theatre. Through Andha Yug, we hope to enhance the interest level of both youngsters and general audience towards this wonderful medium.”
On choosing the play Andha Yug in particular, Sh. Vaishnavi further elaborates, “Andha Yug is a classic play that beautifully outlines the fact that every act of violence inevitably debases not just the affected individuals but the society, at large, as well.”
As per Bhanu Bharti, Director, Andha Yug, “This play is very much relevant to the modern times as well. It is an allegory of the pathos and feeling of hopelessness felt by millions across the globe, as violence and hatred has seeped today deeply into the social fabric of various countries. Though its pretext is that of the historical events that occurred during the Mahabharata war, it accurately captures the sentiments of loss as felt by both the victim and the victor in modern times too.”
The event will be inaugurated by Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi. A number of other dignitaries are also expected to grace the occasion with their presence at the event.

About Bhanu Bharti
Bhanu Bharti is one of the most eminent people in the Indian theatre world today. Born in Ajmer, Rajasthan in 1947, Bhanu graduated from National School of Drama (New Delhi) in 1973 and further studied traditional Japanese theatre in the University of Tokyo. He then went on to found his own theatre group ‘Aaj’. With over fifty productions to his credit, and a long string of honours, including the Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Bhanu Bharti has over 40 years of experience in theatre. He does not cease to experiment and his dedication does not fail to inspire. Being one of the most innovative directors of his time, Bhanu has directed several national cultural programmes such as the mega event in Delhi’s Vijay chowk on the 50th Anniversary of India’s Independence, the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations for the Indian diaspora in 2006, the Bharat Utsav in Delhi for the celebration of India’s 60th Anniversary of Independence, etc.

About Andha Yug
Andha Yug (The Blind Age) is 1954 verse play written in Hindi, by renowned novelist, poet and playwright Dharamvir Bharati (1926 – 1997). It is one of the most celebrated works of the Padma Shree awardee. Set in the last day of the Great Mahabharata war, the five-act tragedy was written in the years following the 1947 partition of India atrocities. The play is considered as one of the most significant plays of modern India. It is a profound meditation on the politics of violence and aggressive selfhood. The moral burden of the play is that every act of violence inevitably debases society as a whole. The play still holds relevance in modern times where several countries world over are facing social unrest, war, terrorism etc; these grave issues are dehumanizing both individual and society thus generating a collective conscience rife with mistrust and impatience. Today, the play is recognized as a “play that heralded a new era in Indian theatre” and has been staged by numerous directors and various Indian languages.

India, August 1, 2011- IndianArtCollectors.com has always tried to bring forward art, and creativity, to the windows of avid artists and buyers. With this vision intact, the online portal has joined hands with Delhi-based artist Kanchan Chander, where the artist would showcase an expansive collection of her works. The online display of art-works would allow collectors from across the globe to browse, appreciate, discuss and transact— at their convenience.

The Online Exhibition, starting August 1, uptill a fortnight, would feature a unique collection of Chander’s work. “I have been associated with art since 35 years, and over the decades, have evolved and grown as an artist. Thematically, I work a lot on women based subjects— the art of assertion, of the feminine experience; the art of an iconic feminine energy and identifiable images of feminine power. But no, I am not a feminist,” explains Chander.

In her paintings, Chander has subtly spoken about the feminine power. She talks about mother-child relationship and has also depicted divine figurines. More recently, she has dabbled with the use of texture on the surface. “I don’t like to be stagnant; imagination and creating something new keeps me going, and growing. To add texture to my canvas, I have recently started working with embellishments like laces, sequins, silver leaves and beads,” shares Chander.

Chander has widely traveled and her keen power of observation is evident in her art-work. Her recent works consists of representation of the iconic Frida Kahlo, and classical sculptures. “Chander is a painter, printmaker, sculptor and a lecturer. As an artist, she has undoubtedly come of age, and her path has been a constantly evolving one. We are glad that distinguished artists like Chander are joining hands in our aim to promote Indian art across the globe,” concludes Anuja Lath, Co-Founder and CEO, IndianArtCollectors.com.

Success rests lightly on the shoulders of Kisalay Vora, whose works are, at once, experimental as well as stimulating.

Mumbai, July, 2011: Kisalay Vora wants to bring art to every nook and corner of major Indian cities. The Mumbai-based artist, who graduated from JJ School of Arts, plans to install art works at important junctions in cities that will reflect civic, cultural, environmental and everyday issues faced by the people. Vora plans to collaborate with artists from abroad and will also work with the municipal corporations of the respective Indian cities to get his project off the ground. “It’s my dream to paint my city, every wall and pavement, and spread awareness about human rights, religious exploitation and pollution and so on.

Kisalay Vora believes that public art is an artist’s way of giving back to society. The Public art movement initiative seeks to place art in the public domain reaching out through issues reflecting civic, cultural, environmental issues and those which are part of the daily life of people who reside around.

Art is the purest form of communication,” asserts Kisalay Vora. An artist par excellence, whose paintings ooze energy, spontaneity and innovative techniques setting new trends, Kisalay has constantly exploited new horizons.

Hailing from a small town in Gujarat, Kisalay was drawn into art from childhood. After graduating from the reputed JJ School of Arts, he worked for advertising giant ‘Lintas’ as a visual merchandiser. Soon he moved to designing nightclubs in Mumbai! Explaining this unusual shift, he says, “I have always loved large spaces and the subjects I wanted to communicate required huge spaces. Clubs, though not equivalents of art galleries, provided the space.”

Kisalay had initiated the movement long time back and plans to collaborate with artists from the abroad for this project. He wants to popularize art through wall paintings. The movement will cover major cities and centers of the country starting October 2011 in association with the municipal corporations; the plan is to paint various walls at important junctions covering various aspects.
Kisalay Vora asserts “I think that as an artist, I should give back to society what it gave to me.” He adds: “Every artist should remember where art came from and what he or she went out in the world to become an artist for to re-communicate.” He feels that art has a timeless value to it, rather than what it has become today — one measured by monetary success. “Stone Age artists painted and carved for the very essence of art and that’s what I am here for.”

Kisalay Vora’s imagination soared when his orator-father told him stories of mythology and history, which he in turn would reproduce visually, as he grew up to become an artist. Kisalay says he admires artist M. F. Hussain quotes from Italian painter Pablo Picasso about the ‘unlearning’ of painting:“It took me four years to paint like Raphael but a lifetime to paint like a child. Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.

Kisalay describes his style of art as revolving around spontaneity, vigor, joy and love. The dominant themes include a contemporary viewpoint towards eastern philosophy and mythology. Being a firm believer in art as being a mode of communication, he says, “Art can’t be timeless if it can’t communicate. Art is an expression of joy, a silent messenger and the most understated teacher. It’s not a one-time process. It tells you something time and again.”

Kisalay rues at the perception of art as a commodity in present times. “Nowadays, art has become Coldplay. The parameters for judging art is now price and utility, making it a commodity. Situations should not be added to art. Only then will it be pure,” he opines..
Mumbai, according to him, provides a conducive atmosphere for artists – upcoming and established, as it’s a City forever ready to accept change. Promoting public art, he says, “There is nothing like ‘public art’. What this concept essentially means is that art is for people. It has a subject and communicates in its own way. It speaks more than words. Even a painting on the wall is a statement. My main aim is to make public art a global movement and experiment with different media and surfaces.”

Kisalay Worked on number of night clubs has created biggest dance floors, biggest clubs, tallest sculpture, largest mural amongst others. His creations had become prime spots in the city.

Kisalay has a fully integrated studio at Saki Naka (Andheri) in Mumbai and also at Koregaon Park, Pune.
