Management Discussion and Analysis (for the quarter)

Jet airways continues to improve its cost per seat kilometre and this has resulted in reduced Cost per ASKM (excluding fuel) by 3.7% due to strict cost control measures implemented across various areas of the business along with effective route rationalising exercises.

This has resulted in Jet Airways posting an operating profit (EBITDAR) of ` 3,169 million for Q4 FY 2011 despite a 32% increase in fuel prices as compared to the same period last year. The Fuel cost was 39% of the total costs versus 32% of Q4 FY 2010.

During the period, there was an unprecedented increase in prices of fuel which airlines were not able to pass on to the customer fully. Though airlines did take increases in Fuel surcharges, the full impact of the same will come through only in the next quarter. As such, the operating performance for the quarter has been significantly impacted by such fuel price increases.

The impact of fuel price increase for Jet Group as compared to the same period last year was ` 3,461 Million (US $ 77.62)

The quarter results were also impacted on account of certain one time/ exceptional items like Service tax demands amounting to Rs. 58 crores ($ 13.2 million). Excluding the same, the loss for the quarter would have been lower.

The Jet Group continues to maintain its leadership position in the Indian aviation industry with the highest market share of 25.4 % for the quarter ending March 2011.

Our on time performance for the quarter as a whole for Jet Airways Domestic operation was 91.1% and for Jetlite 85.2%, we continue to be number one airline in OTP as well.

Mr. Nikos Kardassis, Chief Executive Officer, Jet Airways (I) Ltd said, “While we may not be able to impact external factors, our relentless focus remains on improving efficiencies and productivity in our operations. Airlines across the world have been impacted by the rude crude shock lately and Jet Airways is no exception. Though we would have liked to pass through all of the fuel price increases, it was not possible to do that in the short term.

Given the current circumstances, we are satisfied with our results and more importantly with our industry leading operating performance in terms of On Time Performance. Also, our International growth and seat factors continue to improve constantly which is a testimony to the growing emergence of the airline, as the preferred choice for guests to and from the Indian subcontinent.

Highlights of Jet Airways Domestic operations Q4 FY’11

Domestic operations accounted for 41.8% of total revenues ` 13,729 million (USD 307.9 million). Domestic traffic for the Jet Airways group grew by 19 % for the quarter vs same period last year. As against this, industry traffic grew by 21%.

Seat factors remained at around 73% for Q4 FY’10 & Q4 FY’11. Capacity in terms of ASKM of 2,914 million in Q4FY11 went up by 12% versus Q4 FY10.

Highlights on International operations Q4 FY’11

International operations accounted for 58.2 % of total revenues ` 19,153 million (USD 429.5 million). Achieved seat factor of 80.4% in Q4 FY11 versus 81.6% in Q4 FY10.The EBITDAR margins are at 16.2% in Q4FY11 versus 23% in Q4 FY10.

The International business of Jet Airways has now posted several consecutive quarters of consistent growth in terms of SF% of above 80% and increase in the capacity in terms of ASKMs reflecting the growing impact of our network synergies, major strategic international code shares and customer centric product and service focus.

For the quarter, International traffic grew by 18.1% for the quarter vs. same period last year.

Outlook

The dramatic rise in crude oil prices severely impacted the quarter in question and also the month of April. In May 2011, crude oil prices have cooled off to some extent and should help airlines improve margins. Also, the full impact of all the fare increase and surcharge increases will come through only in the current quarter.

To the extent crude oil prices and fares continue to remain higher, it could impact some traffic growth in the short term though the medium term growth outlook remains intact. This is because of the fact that due to other macro economic conditions, discretionary spending on travel could get affected in the short term. The capacity growth in the market continues to be manageable but traffic growth in the short term is slightly sluggish.

Our International business continues to be robust and we are achieving healthy seat factors. The routes to Milan and Johannesburg have matured significantly since inception and are currently achieving load factors in the 70% zone. We have also added new short haul flights to Gulf and Middle East which will boost the network flows and revenues. With the return of the 2 B777 aircraft next quarter, we intend to upgrade some of our A330 services to a B777 operation and the aircraft which gets released will be used to start up Manila and other Gulf operations.

13 April 2011, While it already has an operation in Dubai, it is now eyeing other parts of the Middle-East, where its Chairman, K S Kohli, scents an immense potential for its services. “We are the number one airhostess training institute. Now we want to expand our footprint globally,” Kohli said. With this view, it has set up Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess Training FZ LLC and launched its operations in Dubai. “Soon we propose to enter other Middle-East markets,” he said. Frankfinn also has a presence in Mauritius and Hong Kong. Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess Training is a division of Frankfinn Aviation Services. Buoyant about the future of the aviation industry as also of the hospitality and travel sectors, Kohli said that as these sectors grow exponentially in the coming years, there would be a tremendous need for trained personnel and hence the growth of his Institute and others such as his, is a given.

“As the aviation sector expands, there will be new aircraft, new airports and increased number of flights. Trained manpower will be required to cater to a rapidly-growing number of customers. It is here that institutes such as Frankfinn will have to play an important role,” Kohli said. Frankfinn’s courses have a global acceptance, he said. “All courses at Frankfinn in aviation, hospitality and travel management are accredited by ICM, UK, an institute of repute that is recognized in over 130 countries worldwide.

The rapid growth of all these industries can be gauged from the fact that in the last one year over 5000 Frankfinn students have been placed with 1900 in just 100 days in the aviation, hospitality and travel industry. The top salary offered was Rs. 1.26 lacs per month. Over 700 campus/ exclusive interviews were conducted in the last one year.

Testimony to this is the fact that Frankfinn’s students have got placed not only in Indian air-carriers but also in leading international ones such as Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Oman Air and Malaysia Air.

In the hospitality sector as well, leading chains such as the Leela, Hyatt, Marriott, Taj and ITC, among others, have hired Frankfinn’s graduates, he said.An important facet of the Institute he highlighted is the fact that it has a dedicated placement assistance cell which assists students in their placement even after completion of their course.

Frankfinn also has a tie-up with Jet Airways for in-flight familiarization and after completion of the same, the students get a co-branded certificate,” he said. Frankfinn also offers soft-skills training to corporates in areas such as leadership skills, conflict management, team-building, sales skills and stress and time management, among others. It also lays emphasis on personal grooming, etiquette and mannerisms. Christened Frankfinn Corpexcel, it offers training solutions for all levels—right from the entry-level employees to the CEO.

Frankfinn also has a company—Frankfinn Management Consultants—which specializes in providing HR solutions to many airlines and hotels. This company is the recruitment partner for all positions in India for the entire Emirates Group including Emirates Airlines. In the past, it has provided recruitment consultancy to Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Air Arabia, Indigo and Air Deccan (now Kingfisher Red). The group has also ventured into the security services business with K5 Security, Kohli said.

Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany, January 27, 2011 – The modular final assembly system FAStplant® from Duerr has proven itself since entering the market in 2004. The wide spectrum of applications for the system – ranging from automotive test plants to mass passenger car production, and from pre-assembly of aircraft wings to motor cycle manufacture – demonstrates just how versatile it is. Ongoing development on the basis of practical experience means that today FAStplant® can be utilized more flexibly than ever before.

Daimler was the first to put its trust in FAStplant® when it built a six module pilot plant at Sindelfingen (Germany) in 2004. Further test plants followed for Toyota at Valenciennes (France), Ford at Cologne and VW at Zwickau (both in Germany). This was because the rapid installation and high adaptability characteristics of FAStplant® make it particularly suitable for test programs involving a variety of models and prototypes.

The first customer, Daimler, relocated its FAStplant® system three times within a period of six years and is now utilizing it at its fourth location. Other OEMs, such as BMW and Audi, have opted for FAStplant® for smaller production series: Audi has been assembling the R8 sports car with the system at Neckarsulm (Germany) since 2006, and at Chennai (India) several different BMW models have been produced very flexibly on a CKD assembly line there since 2007. The first mass-production chassis line – incorporating 80 FAStplant® modules and including 58 hangers with infinitely adjustable height regulation – was built by GM at San Luis Potosi (Mexico). This American manufacturer has been producing 100,000 vehicles per year there since 2009.

The FAStplant® system, which is based on a simple modular principle and allows pre-fabricated and tested modules to be combined freely to form assembly lines, is proving to be increasingly convincing in other industrial branches too. A motor cycle manufacturer is currently having new concept FAStplant® utilities modules installed so that work stations are uniformly equipped. This system user is introducing FAStplant® on a worldwide basis and is capitalizing on the system’s strength – simplicity of production capacity adaptation around the globe.

FAStplant® is not affected by roof load restrictions, so simple, low cost building concepts can be implemented regardless of the size and weight of the product involved. A newly developed heavy duty module has made it possible to transfer FAStplant® technology to aircraft production. Two assembly lines, incorporating 130 modules and with a total length of more than 1.2 km, went into operation for Lockheed Martin at Fort Worth (USA) in March, 2010. For the first time in aircraft manufacture, wings are being assembled in pulse production there. The wings can even be turned on their own axis so that special assembly processes can be carried out.

The diversity of these FAStplant® projects shows just how vital it is for system users to be able to modify manufacturing lines easily and to adapt production quickly and optimally to suit changing market situations.

Duerr is a mechanical and plant engineering group that holds leading positions in the world market in its areas of operation. It generates a good 80% of its sales in business with the automotive industry. It furthermore supplies the aircraft, machinery, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries with innovative production and environmental technology. The Duerr Group operates in the market with two divisions. The Paint and Assembly Systems division supplies production and painting technology, especially for car bodies. Machinery and systems from the Measuring and Process Systems division are used in engine and transmission manufacturing and in final vehicle assembly, among other areas. Duerr has 48 business locations in 21 countries worldwide. The Group achieved sales of € 1.1 billion with approximately 5,700 employees in 2009.

Have you ever been disappointed in life, especially with having to lose the opportunity of meeting family and friends or having no proper hotel room booking while on vacation? No doubt, disappointments are a part of life, but not when they are caused by the negligence of other people failing to do their duties well! Well this is a horror story about what the so– called great travel giant MakeMyTrip.com did to ruin my Christmas holidays.

My wife, son, and I were excited about visiting a beautiful resort in Mysore and made bookings through MakeMyTrip.com. We were of course very courteously informed that bookings had been made and there was no need to contact the hotel to confirm. However, on the day we reached the resort (after travelling 300 Kms) my family and I were in for a great embarrassing surprise!

The receptionist informed me there was no booking in my name from the so–called MakeMyTrip.com. Imagine the embarrassment I went through with my wife chiding me for trusting unknown people and seeing my son play happily not knowing that he was going to be disappointed when he heard he couldn’t spend his holidays here.

I had no other option but to settle for a more expensive place recommended by the manager of the resort who was kind and helpful. Talking further with the manager on why I didn’t get a booking, I was told that mine was the 10th such case in this week and MakeMyTrip.com guys had called on 12.00 noon to confirm my booking! I couldn’t digest this. I had made the booking 10 days well in advance and these guys try to confirm it on the day of my check-in and that too during peak holiday season.

That day evening, I checked online review sites like mouthshut.com for reviews on MakeMyTrip.com and noticed that I was not the only one to go through this ordeal and that there were hundreds of people suffering the same fate and no doubt many victims of MakeMyTrip.com. I was absolutely baffled at the way MakeMyTrip.com make people go through such horrible ordeal. I immediately decided to create a website http://www.ruinedmytrip.com where people who have had similar experiences like this with MakeMyTrip.com could write about at and expose the negligent manner in which they function.

There are definitely many silent sufferers who for some reason feel it is better to endure rather than cure things. This is a great opportunity for them to come out with their woes and let other people know what is happening.

Visit my site at http://www.ruinedmytrip.com and share the experiences and disappointments you have gone through.

This could be a lesson learned for the concerned travel agents and a warning for those planning their trips with them. Make your trip enjoyable and not miserable. Log on to http://www.ruinedmytrip.com and voice your opinion and read other people’s horror stories.

India, September 29, 2010: India‘s Shipping Minister, G K Vasan, who is leading a delegation of senior government officials and business leaders from the India maritime sector to Singapore, today invited Singapore to participate in India’s port development programme. He outlined the opportunities for foreign investors in India’s USD 20.8 billion port upgradation and modernisation programme involving 276 ports, many of which are Public-Private Partnership projects in various stages of implementation or bidding.

Minister Vasan was speaking at a seminar on the Ports and Maritime Industry of India organized by the Indian High Commission and CII today.

Similarly, India is also surging ahead in shipping and ship-building, the Minister said. India is currently ranked 16th among the maritime countries in terms of the size of its merchant shipping fleet and tonnage has grown from 6.94 million GT in 2004 to cross the 10 million GT mark last month for the first time. Shipbuilding has high growth potential owing to certain inherent strengths, especially low labour cost, strong domestic demand, well-established steel and manufacturing industry and availability of technically qualified manpower, and an investment of USD 4 billion is envisaged in Indian shipyards in the near future.

Apart from investments, India also looks to Singapore for expertise, given Singapore’s impressive and world-class port and maritime industry, the Minister added. Many Singaporean companies have already invested in India’s ports, maritime and logistics sector and also entered into joint ventures with Indian companies, but given the expected healthy growth of the Indian economy, there is tremendous potential for Singaporean companies. Minister Vasan outlined some of the key investor friendly policy initiatives taken by the Ministry and assured the Government of India’s complete support to Singaporean companies investing in the sector.

The seminar featured session on Ports and Shipping sectors, and was attended by around 200 representatives of industry from Singapore. Well known ports and shipping companies from India including Mundra Port, Bharati Shipyard, Jindal Saw, Pipavav Shipyard, Essar Shipping, IL&FS, Shipping Corporation and Chairmen of ports of Chennai, Cochin, Kandla, Kakinada and Mumbai were part of the delegation that travelled to Singapore from India.

Confederation of Indian industry: India could be a market of over 4 billion passengers in near future : DG & CEO, IATA

New Delhi, India, Sept. 23, 2010: There is tremendous potential for Indian aviation to grow, currently 42 million annual passengers fly domestically and 34 million internationally. “If Indians flew as much as Americans, it would be a market of over 4 billion passengers. With the spending power of Indians set to triple over the next two years, the potential for growth is incredible,” said Mr. Giovanni Bisignani, Director General & CEO of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) at an Interactive meeting on “Challenges of Indian Aviation” organized by Confederation of Indian industry (CII) today,

India has to have a more coordinated cross-ministry government approach in shoring-up the gains in India’s aviation industry. But there is still much more to be done. It’s time to take care of structural weaknesses and go for a comprehensive approach with a common vision by all involved,” said Giovanni

Key areas requiring special attention to improve the Aviation market are safety, infrastructure, liberalization, policy coordination, security and environment.

The success of India’s airlines should not be compromised by an archaic investment policy that isolates them from global trends,” said Bisignani noting recent trends of consolidation, multi-hub and multi-brand strategies. . India allows 100% FDI in transit systems, ports, harbors, hotels, ocean transport and road systems. But airline FDI is restricted to 49%. Moreover, no foreign airline can invest in an Indian airline.

To build competitiveness, it is critical that the costs of operating in India are reduced. “It is an embarrassing situation for such a relevant country as India-which is a member of the ICAO Council-to be ignoring rules that it has helped to develop,” said Bisignani.

The air transport industry has committed to improve fuel efficiency by 1.5% per year to 2020, cap net emissions from 2020 with carbon-neutral growth and cut net emissions in half by 2050 compared to 2005.

“IATA continues to expand our India operations….this could be the decade when Indian aviation will reach its potential. But there are no guarantees for success without continued hard work, change and a common vision for success shared across government and with the industry. India has come a long way in addressing the challenges of growth. The foundations for success are half-laid and IATA will continue its support to help finish the job,” added Bisignani.

Dr Vijay Mallya, Chairman, CII National Committee on Civil Aviation and Chairman and MD of Kingfisher airlines Ltd said that, the Indian aviation industry will see a new high and India has the potential to emerge as an aviation hub. But a supportive, conducive environment is required. The few challenges faced by the industry include high cost of aviation, restricted FDI policy among others.

Mr. Ankur Bhatia, Executive Director, Bird Group also reiterated that the regulations prevalent in this industry prevent airlines from maximizing operative and business efficiencies.

CII SPACE EXPO CALLS FOR STRONG PUBLIC PRIVATE PARTICIPATION IN SPACE BUSINESS

CII Space Expo Attracts Business Delegation from 10 Countries

Bangalore, India, 25th August 2010: A three-day international conference cum exhibition on space business Bengaluru Space Expo 2010, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), which began here today, underlined the importance of greater co-operation and interaction between the industry and Government in space related business with focus on inclusive growth.

The Bangalore Space Expo 2010 conference, which was attended by over 400 space scientists from India and abroad along with the private sector sought to provide a common platform to the scientists, manufacturers and policy makers to share their experiences on the latest developments in space technology.

The Space Expo attracted business delegations from 10 countries including, UK, USA, Japan, Korea, Israel, Nigeria, Denmark, Thailand, France, Czech and Kazakhstan.

The Inaugural Session of the Conference was addressed by Dr K Radhakrishnan, Chairman, ISRO, H.E Prof. Mohammed Abubakar, Minister of Science and Technology, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr K R Sridhara Murthy, Managing Director, Antrix Corporation Ltd, Mr Vikram Kirloskar, Chairman, CII National Committee on Technology and Mr Rajive Kaul, Chairman, CII Trade Fairs Council.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr Radhakrishnan, ISRO Chairman, highlighted the contribution made by space technology, particularly emphasized upon the commercialization of space technology for inclusive growth. He said the achievements of ISRO had impacted the society effectively though this would not have been possible without the contribution from the private sector.

In fact, he said, over 500 companies from the small, medium and large sectors were currently involved in the series of launches that ISRO had undertaken over the years, to the mutual satisfaction of all parties. While acknowledging industry’s support to the country’s space programme, he stated that much remained to be done in consideration of the speed with which space technology was advancing in the country.

Accordingly, he said for the Indian space sector to remain in the frontline, the industry would have to become a risk bearing partner. This would raise the overall level of quality besides proving mutually beneficial. In this context, the industry would also do well to look at high technology sectors in line with ISRO’s growing demand for the latest know -how.

In his special address, H.E Prof. Mohammed Abubakar, Minister of Science and Technology, Federal Republic of Nigeria referred to the space programme that his country was undertaking which would ultimately lead to a better life for his countrymen and bring about inclusive growth.

Mr Vikram Kirloskar, Chairman, CII National Committee on Technology highlighted the need to put a major thrust on increasing the industry’s investment in R & D. Collaboration with public funded research institutions, he said, would be the key to such endeavour and the CII would be happy to work with ISRO and Antrix.

Mr Rajive Kaul, Chairman, CII Trade Fairs Council referred to the Indian space programme which ran into billions of dollars. This also indicated the worth of the private sector in India and its contribution to this programme. The current collaboration had the potential to grow even further increasing the need for commercializing more products and technologies for the benefit of the nation.

From the industry’s perspective, he said the BSX 2010 aimed to showcase capabilities and identify opportunities for Indian and international space sector. The objective was to establish long term ties to serve the Indian space security, defence and development requirements. This could be done by exploring prospects and opportunities for individual collaboration, international R & D not to mention discussions on Indian and international approaches to government-industry partnerships.

Mr Sridhara Murthy, Managing Director, Antrix Corporation, spoke about how space could reach out to the various sectors and benefit the markets. As space markets were growing, related technologies were getting assimilated. Economies of scale in this context, assumed importance in enhancing competitiveness.

Reiterating the role of the private sector in this regard, he hailed the contribution made so far by the industry while pointing out greater opportunities that were coming up even as the importance of developing low cost technologies increased. The role of the private sector, he said, in realizing this goal could not be undermined.

Earlier, Dr Radhakrishnan formally inaugurated the Bengaluru Space Expo, the first of its kind in Asia which featured the participation of global players in space, satellites and related technologies. The 3-Day expo will be open till 28th August at Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), Bangalore.

The impressive growth figures have been recorded despite disruptions in flight schedules due to volcanic eruption in Iceland that resulted in the closure of several airports across Europe including London during the month of April 2010. Jet Airways, also operated additional flights from Bangkok to Mumbai and Mumbai / Delhi to London, to enable the movement of stranded passengers onwards to London post the resumption of flights to Europe.
