Wide variety of Corn Hybrid offerings to bring significant yield increase for Bihar corn growers

Patna, 10 August, 2011 – With more than 80% of Bihar’s population employed in its agricultural production system, agriculture has been the cornerstone of the state’s economy. Supporting the state government’s seed plan, Pioneer Hi-bred, a DuPont business, has consistently offered corn hybrids in the past which has led to growth in yields, thereby improving the livelihood of farmers in Bihar. The total yield of corn in the rabi season of 2008-2009 was 3828kg/hectare, an increase from 2005-2006 seasons’ 3048kg/hectare and Pioneer® corn hybrids were major contributors to this growth.
In the last planting season alone, Pioneer® brand corn hybrids 30V92, 30B11, P3404 and P3785 were adopted by two lakh corn growers in Bihar with 30V92 occupying close to 25% of the total planted corn area, during the Rabi season.
“Pioneer has been working with the farmers of Bihar more than 30 years now and leads the industry with innovative technologies that reduce the time taken to bring new products to farmers, thus meeting specific agricultural growth challenges,” said Dr. K V Subbarao, country manager for PHI Seeds Private Limited, India. He added, “We look forward to introducing two new corn hybrids in the forthcoming Rabi season in Bihar, Pioneer® hybrid P3522 and P3396.”
New hybrid features

P3396 has a unique plant structure that enables growing of higher number of plants per acre. It has distinguishing features like excellent stalk rot tolerance, good stand ability and a high shelling percentage, while grown during appropriate cultivated conditions.

P3522 the new offering from Pioneer is set to further this corn revolution it initiated. It has a value based offering of big-sized cobs, excellent tip filling, attractive grain color, ability to grow higher number of plants per acre and being a consistent high yielder. With an offering of six distinct hybrids, Pioneer has the best wide ranging capability to offer superior hybrids to farmers and help achieve agricultural sustainability in Bihar.

For more than 30 years Pioneer has been developing and characterizing hybrid seed for farmers in India, while continuing to be one of the nations’s leading suppliers of improved seed varieties. New hybrid launches are the result of rigorous localized breeding and testing that helps ensure Pioneer meets customers’ needs on a field-by-field basis. Pioneer works closely with more than 2.5 million Indian farmers to get the right product on the right hectare to maximize their productivity and profitability. The company also strives to educate and train farmers on the scientific methods of cultivation, right agronomic practices and crop management techniques to improve corn yields and profitability during the post and pre season.

Pioneer began research and parent seed operations in India in 1970. Products developed and sold by Pioneer in India include corn, pearl millet, sunflower, hybrid rice and mustard.

BANGALORE – 7th July, 2011 – The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) is the apex organization of the private and public sector sugar mills in the country. The sugar industry is the largest agro-processing sector in the country. Sugarcane is bought by the sugar mills directly from farmers without any middlemen. The sugar season or sugar year is from October to September. In the last sugar season 2009-10, approximately Rs 45,000 crores was paid to farmers as cane price. This year, it is expected to rise to about Rs 51,000 crores.

Speaking to newsmen, Narendra Murkumbi, President, ISMA said that the sector unfortunately continues to suffer the burden of excessive controls and regulations far in excess of those imposed on any other sector in agriculture or industry in India.

Deregulation of the Sugar Industry

Sugar industry in India is totally controlled by the Government. Certain percentage of sugar produced by the sugar manufacturers has to be given to the Government on administrated price for distribution of the same under PDS. In no other country in the world – not even in small countries like Kenya, Tanzania etc – such type of levies have been imposed on sugar industry. We have raised our demand before the Government to de-regulate the industry in phased manner. To start with, the following two steps may be initiated by the Government:-

a) Abolition of levy sugar obligation on sugar mills

Direct procurement by Government will increase Government subsidy by Rs.2500 crores only. This amount is negligible in comparison to about Rs.70000 crores of Food Subsidy Bill of the Government which is expected to go to about Rs.1.00 lakh crore after promulgation of Food Security Act. Earlier also, the Finance Ministry, Commerce Ministry and Planning Commission had supported proposal for abolition of levy sugar obligation. But the same could not be implemented due to various reasons.

b) Abolition of monthly regulated release mechanism

In our country, sugar mills did not have any freedom to plan their sales and cash flows. This is multiplied by burden of carrying large stocks of sugar due to the monthly release mechanism which is not successful in controlling sugar prices in the recent past as accepted by the Ministry of Food in its Note for the Cabinet.

We therefore, reiterate our demands of de-regulation of sugar industry in phased manner by implementing the above two steps in the direction of de-regulation of the sugar industry.

Losses suffered in current year

The current sugar season has been a surplus sugar production year and the industry is burdened with unprecedented stocks of sugar. Most of the mills do not have adequate storage capacities and cash flows to manage the surplus inventories of sugar with them which leads to distress sale of sugar. Currently, the value of stock balance with sugar mills would be approximately Rs.30,000 crores.

The cost of production of sugar is around Rs.2,900 per quintal in UP and Rs.2,700 per quintal in Maharashtra and Karnataka. However, due to surplus sugar in the country and continuance of stockholding limit on traders, the ex-mill sugar prices are below the cost of production. Such a situation will only erode the finances of the sugar mills and adversely impact their paying capacity to the farmers. With high sugar production next year and lack of similar opportunities to export sugar from India, the sugar mills will no longer be able to pay to farmers.
As per estimates, even after considering the recent permission to export 5 lakh tons of sugar, the opening balance for 2011-12 would be about 60 lakh tons. This is still about 10 lakh tons more than the normative 3 months consumption opening balance for next year of around 50 lakh tons. Considering, likely surplus sugar production next year also, there is immediate need to reduce sugar stocks held with sugar mills by way of export of another 10 lakh tons and removal of stock holding limit on traders.

With low domestic ex-mill prices and improving international sugar prices, the mills stand to gain about Rs.700 per quintal extra from sugar exports. With a surplus sugar year next season also and expected sugar surplus in the international market from Oct 2011, it is prudent to export maximum possible quantities immediately.

With surplus availability of sugar in India and when the country is trying to export sugar even under OGL, it neither makes much economic sense to have a duty free regime for imports of sugar nor any commercial sense to import now. This is hurting market sentiments and sending wrong signals to the market about clarity of Government policies and intentions.

Building cane price arrears will also harm the farmers who may move out of sugarcane in 2012-13 i.e. just about 18 months later. With increase in domestic demand, the country will have to import at high prices. Not only will the sugar industry and cane farmers suffer, but the consumers will have to bear very high sugar prices, a situation the country had to face, though for a short time in 2010.

Ethanol Blending Programme

Traditionally, molasses, a by-product of the sugar industry, has been used in India to produce rectified spirit and alcohol of about 95% purity for producing liquor for human consumption and various chemicals. However, with technological developments in the recent past, molasses has been effectively used to produce bio-ethanol for blending with petrol as a fuel.
Brazil and USA are the two largest producers and consumers of fuel-ethanol in the world. These countries have flexi-fuel cars which can run solely on ethanol. Japan, China, Thailand, European Union etc. have embarked on ambitious plans of ethanol blending with petrol (EBP) programmes. Some of them who are deficient in ethanol, import the same from other countries. USA even provides huge incentives and subsidies for production and use of bio-ethanol and is slowly moving on to higher levels of blend percentages.
EBP programme reduces India’s dependence on fossil fuel imports and allows the nation to move slowly but surely towards energy sufficiency. Being the best oxygenate, it helps petrol burn better, thereby reducing environmental pollution that fossil fuel are infamous for. More importantly, researches carried out by the public sector oil companies in India, have confirmed that 5% ethanol blended petrol gives same mileage and lower emissions than petrol.

Since the EBP programme was conceived to directly benefit the sugarcane farmers, the Ministry of Petroleum and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) put a specific condition in September 2010, for procurement of ethanol for blending with petrol. As per this condition, ethanol should be produced from domestic molasses only. It therefore required that molasses or alcohol cannot be imported by the ethanol producers and the ethanol will have to be produced only from molasses and not sugarcane juice or food grains.

All sugarcane crushed in the country by sugar and khandsari manufacturers produces molasses. With 346 million tons of sugarcane in 2010-11 of which 80-85% would have been used by the sugar industry and khandsari manufacturers, 290 crore litres of alcohol would be available in the country. With a demand of 100 crore liters by the potable liquor industry and contracted amount of 60 crore litres for the EBP programme, around 130 crore liters is the balance available to meet the demand of other sectors. Demand of chemical industry is known to vary between 25 to 60 crore liters (depending on crude oil prices). It is because of excess production of molasses, a part of which could not be sold, that a good quantity of molasses over 600,000 tons had to be exported out of the country during the current year. If this molasses could have been converted into ethanol, it could have displaced 1% of the country’s petrol requirement. With an estimated 7-8% increase in cane production in 2011-12 sugar season, the total quantity of alcohol available would still be higher.
The expert panel under Dr. Saumitra Choudhuri, for pricing of ethanol has recommended in March 2011 price of ethanol linked to price of petrol. Accordingly, the ethanol procurement price will always be lower than the ex-depot petrol price and at present the OMCs are able to save about Rs.12 over the price of petrol. EBP is therefore financially beneficial to the OMCs. The Committee has also recommended to pass part of the savings to petrol consumers.

To ensure more supplies of ethanol for the programme, it is important for the Government to quickly finalize the ethanol price, recommendation for which is now pending with them for over 2 months. The national bio-fuel policy, approved by the Government, has plans for a 20% ethanol blending programme by 2017. This can be achieved only if we continue with the approved plan of the Cabinet, reiterated again and again by the Government. Questions and doubts are being raised by vested interests who procure alcohol at a throwaway price for other uses.

The EBP programme is essential for the energy security of the nation, which will reduce pollution from fossil fuel and improve our use of renewable energy in the form of fuel ethanol.

About ISMA

Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the oldest industrial association in the country was established in 1932. It is recognized by the Central and State Governments as the Central Apex Organization to voice the cause of the sugar industry. Sugar mills in the private sector as well as the public sector are eligible to become members of ISMA. Its total strength of membership as on date stands at 226 and accounts for about 55% of country’s total sugar production. ISMA’s history is thus synonymous to the growth of the sugar industry in India which also began in early 1930s.

It is an Apex organization and maintains close contact with all regions in India through a network of regional associations and with international organizations and associations through international bodies. ISMA is the interface between the industry and Government on matters relating to sugar policy, statistics on production, sales, exports/ imports, prices etc.

ISMA maintains database for the sugar industry which is shared with all the member factories, media and also various Government organizations. India entered the sugar export market for the first time in the year 1957 which was entirely the initiative of ISMA.

ISMA’s R&D Cell on sugarcane has successfully identified promising sugarcane varieties in improving sugarcane productivity which received recognition from various research institutions and Government organization etc. The results have been significant in the recent two years.

ISMA interacts closely with International Industry Associations including International Sugar Organization, World Sugar Research Organization, World Association of Beet and Cane Growers and Global Alliance for Sugar Trade Reforms and Liberalization. India is largest consumer of sugar and 2nd largest producer in the world.

As per the National Electricity Policy, non-conventional energy sources like solar systems hold the key to the energization of remote villages.”

Mr. Prosenjit Bose – Managing Director of KBSK said it is true needs to generate electricity from every possible source. Since, the Hon’ble President of India sanction for continuation of the implementation of the demonstration programme on providing support of Solar Home Lightening and other small solar systems to generate electricity. We know very well solar power is the most Eco-Friendly, our effort should concentrate on tapping, this renewable source. Moreover, increasing our dependence on this form of energy can lessen our needs for nuclear power and hence prevent any Fukushima – Type Catastrophy. The Government of India should make it mandatory for all multi storied buildings to have the where withal to harness solar power.

KBSK – revealed that, “Initially, KBSK has plans to install solar energy equipment in 50 villages across different states of India. However, in the expansion phase of the programme, KBSK will implement the total system of solar home lightening and street lightening in villages.”

For the successful execution of this major initiative, KBSK has already tied-up with Jyotirgamaya, a company having vast work experience in Solar Energy since 1990.
Bangalore, India, 8th June, 2011: Shri Karuturi Surya Rao, Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Karuturi Global Ltd, (BSE: 531687), (NSE ID: KGL), the world’s largest producer of cut roses and a leading player in the global floriculture and agriculture industry, has departed for his heavenly abode.

Speaking on the unfortunate demise of Shri Surya Rao, Mr. Sai Ramakrishna Karuturi, Founder & Managing Director, Karuturi Global Ltd., said, “My father, Shri Surya Rao has been my inspiration behind the setting up of Karuturi Global Ltd.

Dairy Farm Automation Is Now a Vital Prerequisite for Success in the Dairy Industry. Heatime – The Revolutionary Electronic Heat Detection Solution from SCR, Is the Ultimate Tool for Producers Seeking to Optimize Dairy Cattle Performance and Well Being

Over the years, many estrus detection aids have been incorporated into commercial farms worldwide in the attempt to combat the issue of estrus detection. One of the most popular methods of combating this issue, at least on large farms, is the use of hormone synchronization or timed artificial insemination (TAI).

Timed-AI programs are designed to synchronize ovulation among a group of animals that are often in various stages of the estrous cycle at the initiation of the program. To accomplish this, most timed-AI programs utilize the sequential administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH-1), prostaglandin F2? (PGF), and a second administration of GnRH (GnRH-2).

Timed AI programs suffer from the following drawbacks:

1.A large number of cows must be gathered and secured to have the hormone shots administered – requiring considerable time and labor. Moreover, the stress related to the gathering, along with the time that the cow stands in headlock, have a marked negative effect on milk production.

2.Each synchronization program requires sequential administration of specific injections. A 95% percent compliance rate throughout a five shot program brings the ratio of correctly treated cows to about 77%. Therefore, the synchronization program practically leaves almost a quarter of the designated cows unaffected.

3.Once a synchronization program has been implemented, the farmer must wait about 30 days following insemination for a pregnancy check to see if the cow is pregnant or if additional treatment is needed. Considering that conception rates of around 40% are considered good, about 60% of cows need to be retreated.

4.Timed AI “forces” the cow to cycle, not allowing the farmer to find fundamental problems that are causing cows not to cycle. Therefore, the fundamental problem may be left unattended for long periods of time.

Fortunately, farmers can now rely on electronic heat detection to solve the problem of estrus detection efficiently, and without the unwanted effects that timed AI systems typically produce. Since its market launch in 2004, SCR\’s heat detection solutions became the new industry standard of heat detection technology, achieving worldwide renown, and having been installed in over 2,500 farms with over 300,000 monitoring tags deployed.

The main factors behind the Heatime system\’s success are:
Unparalleled accuracy – Customers report up to 95% heat detection accuracy;
High reliability – infrared communication, with no regulatory constraints;
Simplicity of use – intuitive, detailed graphic information only a few keystrokes away;
Simplicity to install – stand-alone SCR\’s heat detection technology can be deployed in a matter of hours.
Data scalability – stand-alone SCR\’s heat detection technology can be easily integrated into the Data Flow herd management system.

About SCR

UAE’s ‘Freshly Milled Oats’ serves as a strategic location for key markets across the Sub- Continent and MENA region.

Sole producer of freshly milled Oats in the UAE drastically reduces transportation lead – time from months to days.

UAE, 22 March 2011: Al Ghurair Foods, the leading Middle East foods manufacturer which recently unveiled the region’s first-of-its-kind factory for freshly-milled oats has quickly paced itself in expansion plans across the MENA region.

With an annual milling capacity of 33,000 tons, in addition to ensuring the region’s food security, the state-of-the-art facility falls in line with the company’s commitment to provide high quality healthy products.

Ibrahim Al Ghurair, Director and Head of Oats Business Unit said, “The 6000 square meters plant comes to serve the rising demand from different industries on freshly manufactured oats. The new Oats facility is a valuable addition to Al Ghurair Foods’ series of milestones, standing as the region’s first of its kind, next to a huge flour plant with a daily 5,000 tons capacity and the Middle East’s largest oil refinery.”

“We continue to witness steady demand growth on our products in the Middle East, Sub-continent (India, Srilanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc) and African markets. Till date, oats were being imported to the Middle-East and the sub-continent with a lead time of at least 5 to 6 weeks. But now, due to our strategic location and close proximity to the sub-continent and Africa, the lead time has drastically reduced to a few days”.

“With the growing demand for the multiple-usage of Oats around the world, our healthy product will be used in several other industries. “Food manufacturers especially across the MENA region as well as the sub-continent will no longer need to import oats in bulk from international markets in Europe, Australia and Canada, as this premium facility will be able to attend to all their requirements” elaborated Ibrahim Al Ghurair.

“The new facility not only serves the UAE, as a key international trading hub and the world’s third largest re-exporter of agricultural products, but also the wider GCC region, the Sub- continent and the African market and we are proud to be a major contributor to local and regional economies around the world”, he added.

According to him, this facility will generate a significant ripple effect, adding value to the operations of numerous wholesalers, manufacturers, retailers and other entities in the food services industry at both local and regional levels.

“The new freshly-milled oats plant, will ensure shorter lead times and flexibility of production according to customers’ needs. Oats produced in the UAE will be distributed across the MENA region and the sub-continent to service the high demand across numerous industries including healthcare and food services,” he indicated.

“The facility is far beyond a great economic contribution that spreads out from the UAE to the region, it is also a provider of a very healthy product with proven health benefits that help address several of the health issues not only prevalent in the UAE but across the world over, including obesity and abnormal cholesterol levels which are generating worrying rates of diabetes and heart diseases,” he added.

The region’s giant player in the food sector has been implementing numerous projects by enhancing its capacity to ensure sufficient food security in the UAE and the region, in addition to encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle within the region.

About Al Ghurair Foods
Al Ghurair Foods entered the foods industry sector in 1976 through the creation of National Flour Mills. Since that time, a diversified portfolio of food products has been developed through a regionally proactive and forward thinking participation. Growing from a small flour mill to a technologically advanced, multi- product manufacturing enterprise, Al Ghurair Foods’ market presence has grown to over 50 countries with a customer base in 4 continents. Jenan is the key brand offering products in various categories that include Flour, Pasta, Edible Oils, Noodles, Poultry, Oats, Pulses, Maize and Rice.

Morarka Foundation to develop organic farming in Saudi Arabia – tied-up with GTZ Saudi Arabia

Jaipur, 10 December. Morarka Foundation, promoters of natural agriculture in the country since last 10 years, has recently tied-up with GTZ Saudi Arabia to develop their organic farming sector.
“With our vast experience and knowledge in the farming segment, the Agriculture Ministry of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia selected Morarka Foundation as resource organisation for technology transfer to develop organic agriculture in that country,” the Foundation’s Executive Director Mukesh Gupta said.
The Foundation is already providing technological know-how to countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Australia. “with Saudi Arabia, we have now entered into Middle East countries with our expertise. We are now looking to expand in the Middle East and other Asian nations in developing organic agriculture,” he said.
Saudi Arabia mainly produces date palm, grains and horticultural products, Gupta said, “We will take step by step approach in converting farming in Saudi Arabia. We will begin with date palm and then extend to grains, vegetables and fruits.”
Presently, 15000 hectares are under certified organic farming in Saudi Arabia and another 30000 hectares are under conversion. It takes about three years for converting any farmland into an organic farm.
A 30-member delegation, including 20 progressive farmers and 10 senior officials from the agriculture ministry of Saudi Arabia will visit Foundation’s organic project sites in Bhuj in Gujrat, Patankalan and Nawalgarh in Rajasthan to have first hand experience, he said. Besides Saudi Arabia has also participated in 3-day international organic trade fair – BioFach India 2010 that began in Mumbai on 7th December 2010 at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon.
“The overall objective of the tie-up is to develop a state-of-art organic sector in production, marketing and certification to satisfy consumer demands for healthy organic food in Saudi Arabia,” GTZ Team Leader Dr. Marco Hartmann said.
“GTZ also aims to offer opportunities to farmers and producers within the domestic and export markets to keep up with global food production quality standards.” He said.
Saudi Arabia is looking to convert its livestock into ‘organic livestock’ , however, this will take tine, he added.
