Mumbai, 7 February 2012; The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI) has placed orders for 6 Nos. Anchor Handling, Towing and Supply (AHTS) vessels with M/s ABG Shipyard Ltd. today, on 31st January, 2012. SCI is committed to development of the shipbuilding industry in India and has selected ABG Shipyard, one of the premier shipyards in the Country, for building these vessels. The shipyard was selected through competitive tendering process which was limited only for Indian shipyards. The vessels would be delivered in a phased manner from 2013 to 2014.

The vessels ordered by SCI are of 80 tonne bollard pull capacity each with superior specifications. These vessels will be able to offer the essential support and services for growth of the Indian Offshore industry.
In the offshore sector, SCI presently has a fleet of 12 vessels of which 9 vessels were acquired during the mid eighties. These vessels have been serving the oil exploration and production sector in India and the older vessels were upgraded by SCI with dynamic positioning systems, enabling the vessels to offer superior service to the oil industry. The present order of 6 vessels would serve as part replacement of these ageing assets after their phase out from the service. In addition to these 12 owned vessels SCI has on order 2 AHTS vessels of 80T capacity each, 3 AHTS of 120T capacity each and 2 PSVs. SCI has also been operating offshore vessels owned by ONGC, some of which are specialized vessels requiring high technical expertise for management. SCI has built up such required expertise through rigorous training of dedicated teams over the years. The present order for 6 nos. 80T capacity vessels mark SCI’s further interest in the offshore segment, which is growing at a rapid pace in the international as well as Indian context.

With the present order SCI’s order book position improves to 29 vessels, which include VLCCs, cellular containers vessels, bulk carriers and offshore vessels.

8 Gigabyte DDR3-1600 Modules to Enter Market

Taipei, Taiwan – 6th February, 2012 – ADATA™ Technology, a leading manufacturer of high-performance DRAM modules and NAND Flash application products, today introduced new industry-leading, single piece 8GB DDR3-1600 high-density memory modules. Known for industry-high standards of quality control and meticulous device engineering, the new modules will meet and exceed expectations of customers who seek performance and quality in DRAM products.

With this launch ADATA is continuing its tradition as an industry leader in DRAM product line-up. These 8GB Premier Series DDR3-1600 single piece memory modules allow users to boost system performance over the limitations of memory slot availability.

The Premier Series 1600Mbps DDR3 240-Pin (Unbuffered DIMM) are standard pin design modules operating at 1.5 volts, with bandwidth up to 12.8 Gb/second (PC3 12800). The memory modules are made of cutting edge high density 4Gb DRAM, so they operate faster, consume less power, and hence operate at cooler temperatures. All the modules are in accordance with JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council, JEDEC Solid State Technology Association) and RoHS design and production standards, simultaneously ensuring compatibility with all computer systems adopting the same standard, and are ecologically sound products. ADATA Series memory modules come with lifetime warranty and service1, providing consumers the best protection.

Information Communication Technologies evolving at an unprecedented rate are now at the heart of economic growth and societal advancement in [...]

Information Communication Technologies evolving at an unprecedented rate are now at the heart of economic growth and societal advancement in two of the world’s key global markets: India and Europe; and there are complementarities in ICT research which can be leveraged to address challenges common to both regions, leading to mutual benefit. The EC-funded project Euro-India SPIRIT (EUIS) has published a set of recommendations for collaborative R&D potential in key priority areas ranging from future networks, cloud computing and trustworthy ICT to networked media and future internet, ICT for public services and ICT for Inclusion. They are captured in a 32-page booklet titled “The New Paradigm – Harnessing EU-India ICT Research Cooperation”.

The importance of being connected is becoming more and more central to the everyday lives of a growing percent of the world’s population and in particular ICT superpowers such as Europe and India. “Networks of the future need to address issues of very high capacity flexibility, heterogeneity, resilience and energy efficiency, while at the same time providing seamleass end to end infrastructure security and dependability,” says Pierre Yves Danet of ASF Lab, France Telecom/Orange labs. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, “believes Euro-Indian collaboration will help in the development of “new wireless technologies which would reduce power required and transmitted per bit drastically, both to reduce energy usage and potential adverse impact that higher and higher electromagnectic transmission may have”.
Shared investments in key areas such as Networked Media and Future Internet could boost innovation in areas such as system architectures and technologies, ultra-high capacity satellite communications systems, ubiquitous fast broadband access, novel radio network typologies and resilient and flexible networks. Euro-India collaboration could therefore leverage knowledge and experience across a number of application domains such as eGovernment, eEducation and eInclusion.

Empowering citizens

Mounib Mekhilef, Professor in ICT at University of Orléans; Director France, Ability Europe, believes that “EU-Indian collaboration can see the joint development of increasingly personalized tools and solutions that make eInclusion a game-changer in Europe and India”. Areas for Euro-India collaboration could include social, affective and persuasive computing; smart, customised and personalised information; personalisable assistive solutions. ICT plays a crucial role in ensuring that Public Services are delivered more efficiently, faster and at reduced costs to citizens and organisations. Joint initiatives with Europe could identify social trends, undertake policy modelling and validate next-generation infrastructures, services and tools to optimise public service delivery and language portability. “There is a huge opportunity for Europe and India to jointly develop affordable biometric identification and authentication equipment and solutions, including application software, for easy access to and delivery of eGovernance services anytime, anywhere, and to anyone including seniors and those that are differently abled.” says Vinay Deshpande of Encore Technologies, India.

Into the Cloud

The emergence of cloud computing promises to enhance current public services in both Europe and India and transform the way business and research are conducted. Fabrizio Gagliardi, from Microsoft Research Connections is of the view that “cloud computing fits well with the highly distributed nature of India enabling increased access to computer resources and empowering a broad set of users in science and enterprise. Improvements in network infrastructure, solutions for wireless and satellite technologies will enable access to cloud computing resources in India allowing remote access from less developed parts of the Indian sub-continent”. It is important that EU-Indian Collaborative research focuses on intelligent and automatic management of cloud resources, scalable data management strategies, infrastructure virtualisation support for mobile and context-aware applications as well as energy efficiency and sustainability of software and services. Developing a collaborative test bed to pilot the adoption of standards-based, interoperable cloud services would pave the ground for a level playing field of mutual benefit.

Jim Clarke, Waterford Institute of Technology, Ireland, believes there is considerable potential to build collaborative partnerships between Europe in India for sharing research results and building common approaches in areas such as malware protection, privacy protecting identity management systems, a strong societal approach to security and usable, effective security in the mobile world. With such a broad range of common themes research cooperation between India and the European Union needs institutional mechanisms and horizontal measures to be put in place and mobilised. The creation of Indian Technology Platforms is required which could be based on the successful European Technology Platforms such as NESSO and EPoSS.

As the Euro-India SPIRIT project draws to a close, its success bringing European and Indian ICT stakeholders together is evident, with a growing online community of users able to access a variety of multi-media features including interviews, reports and training on Euro-India ICT collaboration.

Kivar has cut the time taken to process attendance of community workers from two days to just a few hours [...]

Kivar has cut the time taken to process attendance of community workers from two days to just a few hours

1 FEBRUARY 2012 – Kivar Environ, an environmental services organisation contracted by the Puducherry state government in India to implement an Integrated Solid Waste Management Project at Puducherry city, has chosen specialist document imaging software from Advanced Business & Healthcare Solutions India (Advanced). The software has already cut the time taken to process attendance from two days to just a few hours.

The document imaging software, which went live in October 2011, is being used to accurately record and report on the working hours of the community workers handling waste collection for Kivar.
Kivar had previously been using a mobile-based, manually-intensive application to record the attendance of over a thousand community workers. At the start of each shift, the community workers who were working the shift, would have their attendance recorded, in pencil, on a tick sheet. The data on this tick sheet would then be entered into the attendance tracking system. This proved very time-consuming.

Mr Lakshmi Prasad, the Head-IT of Kivar says, “We recognised the need for an attendance system that could automate the collection of data from the attendance sheets, improving both efficiency and accuracy. We were introduced to Advanced and its electronic document imaging solution which uses the latest optical mark recognition technology.”

Mr Prasad continues, “Thanks to the Advanced system, we have reduced the time taken to capture attendance information from a couple of days to just a few hours. The capture of attendance data is now almost 100% accurate, and provides a better interface to monitor and track community worker attendance across various zones in Puducherry.”

Advanced’s document imaging solution, which uses UK-based Version One’s technology, automatically captures attendance information from the tick sheets. Special attendance sheets with barcodes containing the details pertaining to the shift, sub-zone, the sub-zone supervisor and community workers’ names and IDs are printed daily. At the end of each shift, these sheets are scanned back at the office where the optical mark recognition (OMR) technology captures the ticks and converts these ticks into attendance data.

The barcode data is automatically read and uploaded to the central server and at the same time, the tick sheets are electronically archived. Daily attendance reports and data for management dashboards are now available in the central repository from where they can be quickly, easily and securely retrieved over the web.

Advanced re-seller, WoodApple UnikSolutionz, which is based out of Bangalore, worked closely with Advanced to deliver the solution. WoodApple is currently undertaking portal development that will enable Kivar’s vendors to securely access attendance information over the internet.

Kivar is currently looking at rolling-out the document imaging solution to other cities.

He asserts that “Live project is basically a specializations project to give students practical exposure of their learning in their one and half years. A live project gives the students experience of working within the constraints, requirements and deadlines of the industry, before their final placements. It allows the student to assist industry professionals and see in reality how the entire company/agency functions”.

Aarti Kadam, student PGDM-C said: Being a brand management student I got a life time opportunity to work with a big name like Future group. I am now looking forward for my final placements in retail sector.

Gousiya Khan, student PGDM-C said: Internship at Ogilvy PR worldwide gave me a life changing experience. Initially I thought PR is only about maintaining the image of a Brand or Person, but here in Ogilvy I realized that it is also about ‘Creating’ that image.

I was over whelmed to see brand name like British Petroleum, Dove and CFA in my live projects’. This experience helped me to understand how class room theories can be applied in an agency and also certain things that can be learned only inside that environment.

Rahul Singh, student PGDM-C said: I had a great learning experience working with Madison Rural division and a brand like Reebok. I realised the untapped market while I was doing the training and development of villagers, preparing a real communication strategy and setting up selling and distribution channels.

a new path-breaking book authored by Ankit Fadia, the world renowned Ethical Hacker & Computer Security expert launched in Hyderabad today

“China currently employs 40,000+ people to block content on the Internet.
Hope India is not going to go the China way”: Ankit Fadia

Hyderabad, January 31, 2012: Worried about the Indian government’s threat to block your favorite websites? Tired of your college, office & government blocking everything cool & fun on the Internet? Deprived of accessing Stock Websites, Facebook and You Tube Videos at work? Slow download speeds, download limits, no access to cricket scores & no chatting with friends, making Jack a dull boy? Cheer up as ANKIT FADIA’s latest book “How to Unblock Everything on the Internet” will show how to unblock just about everything on the Internet.

Published by Vikas Publishing House, the book is launched in Hyderabad today. After the launch Mr. Ankit Fadia gave a live demonstration on how to unblock websites, blogs, applications and content on the Internet. The stylishly packaged book shows people how to unblock everything on the Internet. It is priced at INR 150/- is now available at all bookstores across India and even before its official release has already sold more than 2000 copies online!

Freedom of speech and expression is the mortar that cements the bricks of democracy. Completely blocking websites on the Internet by the government is a step away from democracy. However, freedom of speech does not extend to the extreme scenario where it is okay for a miscreant to go into a crowded theater and shout ‘FIRE’! Such an act can harm or hurt the peace and wellbeing of others in the society. Hence it is important for the government and online platforms to join hands to efficiently work together to block the publishing of inflammatory content on the Internet.

However, pre-screening of Internet content or putting the complete liability, responsibility and blame on platforms is not very reasonable. After all, could you sue a mobile phone operator or the neighborhood post office if somebody were to send an obscene or offensive message using their communication medium? You can prosecute the individual who sent the message and not the communication medium that was used.

Speaking on the launch of his new book Ankit Fadia said “Banning or blocking websites on the Internet completely is not the answer and is a step away from democracy and could silence free speech all together. We need to find a middle ground which allows a more efficient mechanism to remove offensive content from the Internet without blocking access to websites completely. China currently employs 40,000+ people to block content on the Internet. Hope India is not going to go the China way”.

Written in an easy-to-understand do-it-yourself manner that just about everybody (both non-technical people and technical people) can understand, this book will teach you simple things you can do to unblock access to blocked stuff on the Internet including social networks (Facebook, Twitter), video streaming websites (YouTube, MetaCafe), Sports/Cricket websites, chat, career sites and just about everything else. If you are studying in a college, working for a company or travelling to a country that has blocked access to everything cool & fun on the Internet (like Facebook, YouTube, Chat and others), making your life miserably boring, this book is sure to come to your rescue. It contains over 50 different chapters and provides step by step processes that absolutely anybody can follow and is ably supported by screen shots as well.

The book “How to unblock everything on the net” will find a widespread audience not only in India but also amongst residents and visitors to countries like China and the Middle East (Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya and others) where censorship is rampant and repressive.

Recipient of the prestigious National Telecom Awards 2011, for “Global Ambassador for Cyber Security” from Sachin Pilot (Minister of State in the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology) a, Ankit Fadia is a globally respected voice on cyber terrorism. Ankit Fadia was also recently selected by the World Economic Forum as a Global Shaper for his achievements at such a young age.

He further added “It is about time that governments start looking at platforms like social media and search as assets and not as enemies. After the Devastating Earthquake in Japan in 2011, Google immediately launched a People Finder website which allowed people to upload pictures & post information about missing people & share it with others and actually managed to help people locate their missing loved ones. The Haiti Earthquake generated more than 17 million tweets alone creating much needed global awareness, aid and help from all corners of the globe in a matter of a few hours. Would you really want to block such lifesaving mediums?”.

Commenting on the launch of the book, Mr. Piyush Chawla, Director, Vikas Publishing Pvt. Ltd. The publisher of the book said “Kudos to Ankit for showing the way to having unrestricted access to legal content on the Internet. A TRUE-VALUE book!”

About Ankit Fadia: At 26 years of age, Ankit Fadia is widely recognized as a Computer Security Expert and Cyber Terrorism guru. He has written 14 bestselling books, delivered more than 1000 talks in 25 countries, received 45 awards, has trained more than 20,000 people in India & China, offers certification courses on Ethical Hacking, hosts his own MTV show called What the Hack!, runs his own consulting company and also went to Stanford University. His work has touched & influenced the cyber lives of millions of individuals and organizations worldwide. He was recently chosen as a Global Shaper by the World Economic Forum.

In November 2001, Fadia was consulted by a classified intelligence agency for breaking an encrypted message sent by one of Osama Bin Laden’s men. Since then Fadia has been involved in numerous classified projects pertaining to cyber terrorism and crime. Interactive panel discussion on challenges and roadmap for Indian companies looking to build their brands overseas to be held as part of the meet

Bangalore, January 31, 2012: GlobalCom PR Network, a global network of over 45 specialized public relations and communications firms across the globe, today announced that it will be for the first time holding its annual network meeting in India at Bangalore on the 9th & 10th of February 2012. The annual network meeting sees the heads of partner agencies in the network meet to discuss global industry trends, strategy of the network for the year ahead and also take policy decisions regarding the network’s operations. The network meetings till this edition have been only held in Europe in Milan, Brussels, Lappland, Barcelona and Munich. The two day meet features an interactive panel discussion attended by the global head of corporate communication of one of India’s leading biotechnology companies, global heads of marketing of two Tier II IT services players and the Head of marketing of one of India’s largest digital marketing firms. The first day would see attending delegates exposed to a slice of Indian culture when renowned Bangalore-based dancers Sandhya & Kiran with their troupe perform “YATRA” – a showcase of Indian classical and folk dance forms for the audience set to an Indian ambience.

Explaining the reason behind choosing India, Ralf Hartman, Managing Director, Globalcom PR-Network NV, said,” As one of the world’s leading independent communication agency networks, we often look to where the future lies and unmistakably for any business including the business of PR, Asia and its two giants India and China are key. Also, the rise of these two economies and others in the region has also led to a shift in the way one looked at business development with a growing number of companies from India and other countries in the region investing heavily in expanding overseas. This emergence of Indian multinationals is a key driver of the business and we needed to start somewhere in understanding and further engaging these key markets of future. Being here, meeting some of the potential prospects and getting a feel of the city and the country is a good start and we are happy to be in India. That we have a key and capable partner in PRHUB here whose head has played a role in the network since its early days made the decision even easier.”
In his comments, Xavier Prabhu, Founder & CEO, PRHUB, among India’s leading PR firms and the only affiliate of Globalcom PR-Network in India, said,” Except for the ICCO conference held in Delhi few years back India despite being one of the key, growing markets for PR globally, has not had a congregation of this nature where one witnesses heads of so many international PR firms. For us this is a great opportunity to showcase the evolution of Indian PR firms and how they are as good as the best in any other market worldwide. Further, our teams here get an opportunity to listen to, interact with professionals from other markets and learn. We look forward to hosting the meet and ensuring it is a all around success with the delegates getting a true flavor of one of the world’s greatest cultures and fastest growing large economies.”

Launches stylish room airconditioners with enhanced energy efficiency.

Airconditioning and commercial refrigeration major, Blue Star Limited, has announced the launch of a new range of contemporary and stylish room airconditioners for the residential segment which will be available in a large number of retail channels across the country. These airconditioners, apart from modern features, offer higher energy efficiency resulting in significant power savings.

Blue Star is India’s largest central airconditioning company with an experience of over six decades in providing expert cooling solutions. Blue Star has been selling room airconditioners vide its sales and service dealers mainly catering to the corporate and commercial segment such as offices, restaurants, showrooms, boutiques and ATMs. Over the last few years, the Company has witnessed significant demand from the residential segment. Despite the fact that Blue Star room airconditioners were not available in retail channels, a considerable amount of Blue Star’s sales came from the residential segment, mainly from consumers who believe that a specialist is better than a generalist and a conviction that if Blue Star is a leader in cooling large spaces, its room airconditioners must be good.
Considering this trend, the Company forayed into the residential segment last year, and made significant changes to its marketing mix including a product line-up to appeal to the residential segment, distribution through home appliance retail outlets and enhanced advertising budgets. This foray met with resounding success and Blue Star’s room airconditioners sales grew considerably despite a decline in sales in the overall room airconditioners industry last year.

Encouraged by its success in 2011, the Company plans to continue to aggressively target the residential segment in 2012.

New line-up of energy-efficient products

On the product front, Blue Star has launched an impressive new range of room airconditioners which adhere to the new energy standards prescribed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). With effect from January 2012, BEE has upgraded the energy standards of split airconditioners to a higher level in line with the Energy Conservation programme. All the star-rated split units this year will have a higher Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) as compared to the same star units last year, translating to savings in power bills. Further, within the range of EER specified for each star-rating, Blue Star has opted for a higher EER within each band, in order to maximize energy efficiency.

Apart from being energy efficient, the new range of split airconditioners have a new contemporary and stylish look with multi-colour options like pearl white, two-tone silver, champagne gold and wine red to appeal to home consumers. They boast of several features including i-feel for comfort where one sits, six filters for ultra-pure air, turbo operation, long distance piping, auto mode, dry mode, sleep mode, blow/self clean function, elegant remote control, rust-resistant construction, self diagnosis, scroll compressor, acoustic insulation on compressor and R410A eco-friendly refrigerant, amongst others. The range of window airconditioners has also been enhanced with a 4-star range, in addition to the existing 1-star, 2-star and 3-star models. The Company plans to invest about Rs 250 million on new product development and research and design initiatives.
Multi-Inverter Split AC

In the inverter range, Blue Star has launched a new break-through product called the Multi-Inverter wherein an inverter-technology based outdoor unit can be coupled to three indoor units to aircondition upto three rooms simultaneously. This product range will appeal to consumers who want to aircondition their entire house and at the same time would like to dramatically save on power bills. This futuristic range helps in reducing the number of outdoor units from three to just one unit, thereby maintaining the look of the façade of the building. The indoor units also have a state-of-the art sleek design with a diamond sparkle to appeal to interior designers and architects. This product re-emphasizes the Company’s commitment to offer high-technology products to residential customers.

Distribution
A regards to distribution, Blue Star room airconditioners were available in home-appliance retail channels in 7 locations last year and the Company has increased its presence in 67 locations this year. In addition, its strong force of about 1000 exclusive and multi-brand sales and service airconditioning dealers will aggressively promote the range. The Company has also built up a strong installation and service franchise network to support the retailers.

Advertising and Brand Communication

In terms of advertising and brand communication, the Company has plans to invest about Rs 150 million in the forthcoming summer season with a new set of TV commercials supported by print ads, mainline dailies, cinema, radio, hoardings and internet. The differentiated value proposition to the residential audience has been identified as ‘Get office-like cooling at home’ which leverages Blue Star’s expertise in cooling offices and communicates that one can get the very same expertise at home.

Speaking to the Press at a conference held in Mumbai, B Thiagarajan, President, Airconditioning & Refrigeration Products Group, Blue Star Limited said “Despite the fact that the room airconditioners market in India declined by about 15% due to a soft summer during 2011, Blue Star’s room airconditioners business has been on a fast growth track and grew about 29% in 2011, with the main growth coming from the residential segment. Several home consumers have instilled their faith in us and believe that we offer contemporary and modern products due to our airconditioning pedigree. Considering our impressive new energy-efficient product range, our aggressive distribution strategy and our commitment to continue to make investments in enhancing brand equity, I am confident that we will continue to perform well in the residential segment.”
