The Oscar Dream of 1200 millions
The Oscar Dream of 1200 millions… The Countdown Begins….
With less than 24hrs remaining for the declaration of the 84th Academy Awards final nominations at Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Hollywood by 5:30 a.m. PT (Pacific Time), the entire nation impatiently awaits the announcement. ‘DAM999’ has already re-written the history of this largest film making country in the world by being qualified for the Oscars in five categories – Best Movie, Original Score and Original Song. The added advantage the movie enjoys is that of the 39 songs selected for the Original Song Category, three are credited to ‘DAM999’. It is an achievement for the movie directed by UAE based Indian film maker Sohan Roy. The “Made in India” movie has made it to the Oscars not through Foreign Movie Category, but as a contender against Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Thor, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol etc to name a few among the other nominees for this year’s Oscar run.
With more than 3 BILLION tickets sold per year, the film Industry in India is more than double that of US and Canada put together. The Indian film industry accommodates the largest film crew compared to any film industry around the world, even the biggest film studio (Ramoji Film City) is credited to India. Yet the Indian film industry is far behind the Hollywood standards by 3-4 decades to get a direct Oscar entry. But through ‘DAM999’ Sohan Roy has proved that the main doors of the Academy are open for the Indians too and they don’t need to enter there under the shadow of someone from Hollywood. This is a revolution… It’s recognition for the Indian Music and Film making with the Music, Sound Design and Cinematography receiving honor from the best in the film industry.
It’s true that India didn’t come up with project like ‘Titanic’ or ‘Avatar’ but through ‘DAM999’ they have proved that special effects including water graphics and 3D conversion can be done in India with the quality required for Oscar recognition. It is now possible for India to present a Visual effects spectacle like ‘2012’. This is just a beginning. It’s no longer a time to dream – It’s now time to make the dreams come true!
