INDIA’S FIRST AND LARGEST BUSINESS COMPETITION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE FROM LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES KICKS OFF THIS SUNDAY AUGUST 8TH
New Delhi, India, August 7, 2010: Be! Fund, India’s first seed investment fund for low-income young people launches this Sunday, August 8th in Delhi. Be! Fund is in search of first-time entrepreneurs, young people (age 18 – 29) from low-income communities who have innovative business ideas that will make money, create jobs and solve problems where they live: water, waste, renewable energy, housing, health and education. Be! Fund believes young people who have grown up in poverty have enterprise plans and solutions for the problems India must solve urgently, they have just never been asked before.
So Be! Fund asks young people, if you could start a business to solve a problem where you live what would it be?
Rashida is 25 years old and lives in a resettlement colony in East Delhi – her idea is to start a safe transport business to and from work for the women in her slum so that they can get to work safely. Deepak, age 27, lives in Holumbi Kalan Delhi and wants to start a computer skills training center with guaranteed job placements for out of work young people in his area, Deepak’s innovation is that young people don’t have to pay for the skills training course, his placement of them in a new job will pay his fees.
For the first time, young people will define their own businesses, make a plan and have a chance to be invested in to make their business a reality. They will own their own businesses and do good for their communities. And we will follow their stories as they grow – telling them through newspapers, radio and on television.
This Sunday, the Be! Fund exciting radio drama begins on All India Radio at 8pm to be played across the next four weeks on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Each Radio series asks young people to apply to the fund by postcard and post their idea to the P.O. Box. Businesses can win investment up to 5 lakh rupees.
