United Bank sets to increase its foot print in unbanked villages
United Bank of India organized Awareness Programme on Financial Inclusion in collaboration with NABARD through credit linkage to Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) and adoption of Farmers’ Clubs as business facilitators at Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur District, West Bengal on 05.06.2010. Shri Bhaskar Sen, Chairman & Managing Director of United Bank of India, Sri N.S.P. Rao, Chief General Manager, NABARD, Sri Narayan Swarup Nigam, District Magistrate, Paschim Medinipur District, Senior Officials of the State Govt., NABARD, United Bank of India & other dignitaries attended the Awareness Programme.
In the awareness programme, initiatives taken by United Bank of India for financial inclusion which include:
* Engagement of 33 farmers club in the district of Paschim Medinipur as Business facilitators.
* Formation of 21 nos. of new Farmers club.
* Formation of 200 Joint Liability Groups.
* Sanction of loan to 100 members of JLGs amounting Rs.30 lakh.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Bhaskar Sen, Chairman & Managing Director of the Bank presented a historical perspective of the bank’s origin and highlighted its strong presence in the East and North Eastern parts of the country. While giving details of the bank’s performance, Shri Sen also referred to the future plans with regard to business growth, technology, financing to agriculture, inclusive growth, etc. Referring to the financial inclusion plan, Shri Sen mentioned that the Bank has made an ambitious target of extending banking facilities to 2000 villages having population over 2000 by 2012. Out of these 2000 villages physical branches will be opened in 45 villages and the rest villages will be covered by ICT solution through Business correspondent. Besides, we have decided to form at least two farmers club through our each rural branch in the current financial years and these farmers’ clubs will help for extending agriculture credit as well as financial inclusion.
The Bank has been doing well in terms of business growth. As on March 2010, the Bank has registered a high business growth of 24% y-o-y and has crossed a business level of Rs 1.12 lakh crore. On Technology front, Shri Sen stated that the bank has already achieved 100% of the branches under CBS as on 13.09.09, He also stated that the Bank has done its maiden public issue during February 2010 and it was oversubscribed by 33 times.
Sri N.S.P. Rao, Chief General Manager, NABARD appreciated the efforts of United Bank of India in accelerating the flow of credit to different priority areas of the government, opening of bank branches in unbanked rural areas as well as adoption of business facilitators / business correspondents and farmers’ clubs etc. for all round development of the small & marginal farmers, etc.
Shri Sri P.K Roy , General Manager, United Bank of India mentioned that Farmers’ Club have been playing a catalytic role in socio economic development of rural people through best use of bank loan and involving all agencies associated with rural development.
